Abstract

Creative industries can contribute to the economic growth of local communities while promoting and preserving local languages and culture. Based on these basic assumptions, this research was conducted to describe the forms and functions of Javanese language and culture used in creative industry products and the factors behind the use of regional language and culture in creative industries. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with a sociolinguistic and creative industry perspective. The research was conducted in three local government areas in Yogyakarta. Data collection was carried out through documentation, document analyses, and interviews. The data covers various aspects of the  Javanese language and culture, such as words, phrases, clauses, sentences, proverbs, Javanese script, naming and greeting systems, and proverbs. The results show that various creative industry products incorporate the Yogyakartan Javanese cultural and linguistic lexicon in their product branding, packaging, and design content. The cultural lexicon consists of Javanese writing, art, traditional clothing, drinks, greetings, phatic forms, and proverbs. Utilizing the Javanese language and cultural lexicon in creative industries can be an effective marketing strategy and an innovative step in preserving and developing local cultural heritage. This can significantly contribute to local economic growth, increase awareness of cultural diversity, and strengthen the community's cultural identity.

Abstract

This is the first part of the two parts of a qualitative focused RD research aimed at designing an application to assist students with visual impairment (VI) in learning English writing and reading skills. The designed application was a speaker-dependent based speech recognition. Conducting alpha and beta testings, it was revealed that MAKTUM, the name of the application, exposed weaknesses on the selection of Ogden’s Basic English as the linguistic resources for the application and on the recording complexities. On the other hand, MAKTUM displayed strengths in individualized pronunciation and simple interfaces to operate.

Abstract

Abstract

Each language community has a unique disagreement strategy in online communication that reflects its cultural values and communication norms. Disagreement can be expressed differently depending on the medium used. In face-to-face communication, disagreement tends to be expressed indirectly and with mitigation. In online communication, disagreement tends to be expressed explicitly and without mitigation. This study describes the strategies for expressing disagreement in the Info Cegatan Jogja Group and the factors that cause the emergence of various disagreement strategies in the group. The study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze sentences expressing disagreement in posts from the ICJ Facebook Group.  The data sources were message walls and comment fields. The study identified four types of disagreement strategies: one-speech strategy, two-speech strategies, three-speech strategies, and four-speech strategies. Verbal communication is the primary strategy employed to express disagreement among ICJ members. The study found that most disagreements are classified as strong, based on the level of confrontation. Various disagreement strategies were identified, which can be attributed to factors such as social media dynamics, posting topics, gender dynamics, and cultural influences. Understanding strategies for managing disagreements and cultural norms surrounding it is essential for successful communication.
