Due to the massive use of Bahasa Indonesia in the non-formal domain, it has influenced the existence of Bahasa Aceh as the heritage language among Acehnese people. This study aims to find out the factors that influence the language shift on the use of the Acehnese language as a means of communication both in written and spoken forms in non-formal domains. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The Data was gathered based on semi-structured interviews. The participants are 10 female parents from Lhokseumawe City, Aceh Province. The result of the study shows in term of spoken, the language shift among Acehnese parents are influenced by their level of education and negative attitude towards the Acehnese language. While in terms of written forms, the language shift among Acehnese parents is due to the efficient use of written form in the Indonesian language instead of the Acehnese language which does not yet have a standard language reference program to be used.Keywords: Parents’ Attitude, Language Shift, Heritage Language

The rapid growth of sophisticated technology has provoked a new way of teaching ESP. These digital technologies in some way enable the teachers to design teaching material more interesting as learning ESP is designed based on the students' needs related to the future professional workplace setting. Moreover, by adopting digital technology into the teaching classrooms, the student can find learning material easily and efficiently. Therefore, this research aims to find out the following issues: 1) what are the preferable digital tools used in learning ESP, and how they work in the classroom? 2) how do those tools influence the students’ motivation in learning ESP? This research employs a library research approach by examining a few related articles on the implementation of digital technology in ESP classrooms, and its impact on students in learning ESP. The result of the study shows that integrating digital technology in classroom ESP is beneficial. Students are more interactive, the teaching class is more collaborative and it can improve learner proficiency. Moreover, integrating digital technology in teaching ESP can create an enjoyable teaching-learning process, result in a positive attitude of the learners, to be motivated therefore the students are more involved in learning activities. However, the study also confirms that adopting digital technology in ESP classrooms also have some drawbacks, for instance, students are easy to be distracted or get digressed when using digital technology such as youtube or smartphone in the learning process.

Research on the vitality of Acehnese language is very important among the dominance use of Bahasa Indonesia among Acehnese. Even, UNESCO recently has paid more attention to the world's languages and make efforts to revitalize potentially extinct languages. Acehnese as one of the heritage languages in Aceh Province, Indonesia also faces risk of extinction due to the shirnk of its domain usage. The purpose of this research is to investigate language vitality among Acehnese female parents in Lhokseumawe city. Qualitative approach was carried out in this study by conducting semi-structured observations, interviews, and strengthened with questionnares delivered to the participants by adopting questionaire model proposed by Cohn (2013). The result of the study shows that vitality of Acehnese language among parents is still strong as a means of communication among certain people and in certain public domains such as in traditional market and around their neigbourhood. Parents also still use Acehnese in family domain with their spouse, and their neighbourhood, however, the vitality of Acehese among parents becomes problematic because most of the parents do not longer use Acehnese when communicating to their children at home on their daily basis.

Suku Batak Toba sudah mendiami daerah Sumatera Utara selama hampir puluhan tahun. Rumah Bolon merupakan rumah adat tradisional Suku Batak Toba, namun banyak bangunan tradisional yang telah mengalami transformasi atau perubahan bentuk akibat beberapa faktor seperti pengaruh kebudayaan asing yang masuk disertai dengan kemajuan teknologi dan modernisasi, sehingga masyarakat terpengaruh dan beralih dengan membangun rumah modern dengan proses membangun yang jauh lebih cepat dan mudah apabila dibandingkan dengan pembuatan rumah tradisional. Hal tersebutlah yang akan menjadi ancaman akan kelanjutan kehidupan arsitektur tradisional. Pendekatan tipologi digunakan untuk mengelompokkan elemen arsitektur yang dimiliki oleh rumah adat Suku Batak Toba dan untuk mengetahui perubahan yang terjadi. Pemilihan sampel menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi dengan pengumpulan data yang dilakukan dengan cara wawancara, dokumentasi dan observasi langsung serta menggunakan data sekunder dengan cara melihat referensi buku, jurnal dan artikel yang berkaitan dengan penelitian. Sesuai dengan permasalahan yang telah diteliti dari beberapa sampel bahwa perubahan yang lebih banyak terjadi adalah transformasi subtraktif dan transformasi adiktif.
University students' perceptions through e-learning implementation during COVID-19 pandemic: Positive or negative features dominate?

English language instruction that moves away from offline to online should become the EFL lecturers’ concern for their students’ successful learning outcome. The students must be kept in the lecturers’ mind when they plan and program the instruction. This study aims at investigating the students’ perceptions and preferences on English instruction through e-learning implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research applies a qualitative approach in a descriptive method design by involving 106 English class students from three different higher educations in Aceh, Indonesia. The thematic and comparative analyses are applied in analyzing the data. The findings of the study show that 50% of the students impress negative features concerning the internet network, a high need of internet quotas, the limitation of learning material explanation and absorption, and the social media influences. The study also reveals that 59.6% of positive features dominate the findings associated with the students’ interest in e-learning implementation as a new learning experience/exploration, engagement and enthusiasm, the flexibility of time and place, and the advance of digital technology usage and adaptation. Besides, WhatsApp, Opensimka, Google Classroom, and Google Meet have become the four most preferable e-learning platform among the respondents. It implies that e-learning implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic gives a variety of practical benefits to university students in the virtual English class. Yet, this still requires sufficient mentoring and extra supporting digital tools for the students and the lecturers.

This study aims to find out the Acehnese parents’ attitudes toward their heritage language, Acehnese, and its implication for the intergenerational transmission of the Acehnese language in the family domain among Acehnese parents residing in two suburbs of Lhokseumawe city in Aceh Province, Indonesia. This qualitative study collected data from semi-structured interviews with 20 female parents who are from endogamy families and Acehnese native speakers. The results of the study underlined three significant issues. First, the parents’ attitudes toward higher educational degree graduates toward their heritage language are negative, and have low self-esteem to speak their heritage language which gradually resulted in a language shift among female parents. However, the parents with lower educational degrees are more confident to speak Acehnese with a strong sense of belonging to their heritage language. Second, a discrepancy is found between the parents’ declaration and their practices in using Acehnese as a mother tongue in their homes because of educational pressures and negative attitudes of the parents. Last, the traditional pattern of intergenerational transmission of Acehnese has been disturbed in the home domains, and this resulted in the Acehnese language being under threat. Consequently, the ability of Acehnese children in speaking Acehnese deteriorates. This study suggests that the important status of Acehnese needs to be recognized as equally important as Indonesian by strengthening the local content policy and immersion approach in schools. Revising the language planning and policy to improve awareness of the values of Acehnese needs to be done.

Characteristics of the Sapo Jojong Traditional House in Penanggalan Binanga Boang Village, has the characteristics of a traditional Pakpak house which is considered quite representative as one of the traditional houses in Pakpak Bharat Regency. The aim of this research is to identify the historical development and architectural aspects of the Sapo Jojong traditional house. Some of the architectural aspects identified include: the spatial system (patterns of spatial relationships, orientation, and hierarchy), the physical system (physical form, space dividers, and materials), and the model system (roofs, columns, openings, ornaments/decoration). The method used in the research on the architectural characteristics of the Sapo Jojong traditional house is a survey method (direct observation) conducted in March-April 2023. Starting with the initial data collection followed by semi-structured interviews and conducting field observations, then the data is analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods.The results of this research show the architectural development of the Pakpak tribe and the characteristics of Sapo Jojong which can be seen from the identification of the spatial, physical, and model systems.

Tujuan Pengabdian Masyarakat adalah untuk meningkatkan nilai mahasiswa semester 4 Jurusan Bahasa Indonesia, IAIN Lhokseumawe dalam mengerjakan soal-soal tes TOEFL. Tes tersebut merupakan tes terstandarisasi digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan seseorang sebagai penutur bahasa asing. Tes TOEFL dianggap penting terutama bagi mahasiswa yang berencana melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi atau bagi yang ingin bekerja di negara dimana bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa utama dalam berkomunikasi. Aplikasi English Score merupakan aplikasi yang tepat untuk melatih dalam peningkatkan nilai TOEFL yang bisa digunakan secara fleksibel. Terdapat 3 tahap yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan ini, yaitu observasi untuk mengetahui pengetahuan dasar terkait TOEFL, implementasi penggunaan aplikasi English Score, dan kegiatan akhir ditutup dengan evaluasi untuk mengetahui pemahaman mahasiswa dalam pemanfaatan aplikasi English Score. Hasil kegiatan dalam pengabdian menunjukkan dampak positif yang signifikan terhadap pemahaman mahasiswa dalam meningkatkan nilai TOEFL, terutama structure dan reading. Kesuksesan terhadap terlaksanaya dengan baik kegiatan tersebut menciptakan potensi dalam pengembangan program serupa di jurusan atau perguruan tinggi lain. Selain itu, adanya kegiatan ini dapat memberikan kontribusi positif guna mempersiapkan mahasiswa menghadapi persaingan di dunia pendidikan dan karir global.
