Abstract

The community service programme was conducted in the form of a training on Basic English for teachers of SMA Bopkri 1 Yogyakarta. The training was conducted online through the Zoom platform and offline at the school. It was divided into ten sessions in the course of two months from 17 February 2022 up to 21 April 2022. Fifteen teachers participated in the training. The materials were understanding sermons, greetings and introduction, describing school facilities, doing school tours, describing school culture, hospitality, entertaining guests, doing small talks, and celebration of learning. The training was conducted in response to the need of the school to improve the English skills of the participants as the school had biweekly English sermons and the probability of having foreign guests. Generally, the training was a success and most of the participants who were adult learners and senior teachers with decades of teaching experiences demonstrated high motivation to learn despite the challenges. The use of three languages: Indonesian, Javanese, and English and the minimum use of technological tools were found to positively affect the participants’ motivation and learning in general. Flexibility in instructional process and relevance of materials were also key factors for success.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the level of work engagement of Indonesian high school teachers of English and its relationship with their attitudes towards the use of instructional technology (IT) during the Covid-19-driven online instruction. The study employed a survey method of distributing a Google Form questionnaire and a total of 114 teachers participated in the study. It was found that the participants generally reported a high level of work engagement in their English Language teaching (ELT) profession. Though at least 93% of the participants reported their engagement in the profession in all questionnaire items, they seemed to be less sure about their level of engagement in terms of striving for excellence in the profession seen from lower "strongly agree" responses. The present study further found a statistically significant positive relationship between the participants' level of work engagement and their attitudes towards the use of IT during the pandemic-driven online instruction. Their level of engagement could predict a 21.7% variance in their attitudes towards the use of IT. Pedagogical implications include encouraging teachers to use all the experiences they obtained during the pandemic to upgrade themselves as teachers rather than totally 'going back' to the old ways of teaching before the pandemic. Future studies could investigate English teaching as a job and can be conducted qualitatively to see the extent to which teachers’ reported engagement is manifested in everyday teaching.

Abstract

The article reports a community service programme in the form of the English Conversation Club (ECC) for students of Kalam Kudus Senior High School, Surakarta, Central Java. It was conducted in the form of eight 40-50-minute online sessions via Google Meet from January 2022 up to May 2022. 30 students participated in the programme. The programme was mainly designed to introduce the participants to varieties of English such as Tagalog, Korean, Japanese, Australian, and Singaporean Englishes and to describe various places in Indonesia or abroad. Introducing varieties of English, more specifically, was intended to nurture positive attitudes towards varieties of English around the world and local accents with speaking English, including Indonesian accents, which in turn could motivate them to speak English confidently regardless of their accents. The participants reported generally positive attitudes towards the programme even though some participants still saw little relevance as to why they should learn varieties of English other than British and American. This slightly negative attitude may be attributed to the participants' limited previous exposure to varieties of English. The combination of limited duration, a big number of participants, and the online mode of the programme may also lessen the effectiveness and how well the materials on varieties of Englishes were delivered. Based on the limitations, it is suggested that to be more effective, future programmes were designed considering more carefully the duration of each meeting, the number of participants, as well as the participants' level of proficiency and previous background knowledge.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted in the form of an English communication empowerment programme for employees of OHANA, a disability rights organisation based in Yogyakarta. The programme consisted of ten 90-minute meetings conducted from early October 2022 up to mid-November 2022. The materials of this training included self-introduction, introducing others, making small talks with a wide range of topics, as well as job descriptions and job responsibilities. The programme was conducted in response to the need for OHANA employees to make more effective communications with foreign partners concerning their jobs as advocates of the rights of women and persons with disability. Despite the low attendance rate in some of the meetings due to the tight schedules of the OHANA employees in providing services to the community, the language empowerment programme can be considered successful seen from the engagement of the attending participants and the generally positive feedback from them. Several conclusions and recommendations are stated considering the degree of success of this programme for the betterment of future similar programmes.

Abstract

This community service activity was conducted in the form of a public lecture on keys to successful academic writing with the English Language Education Study Programme of Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) Toraja being the partner of the community service programme. The public lecture was conducted on-site at the main hall of UKI Toraja Campus 1, lasted for a total of three hours and was attended by 191 students and several lecturers. Among the key contents of the lecture was the reminder to ensure that each paragraph only contains one main idea and to resist the desire to put too many ideas in one paragraph. Furthermore, the lecture also introduced the concept of sandwich paragraph structure and several Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to help the participants organise their writing. From the online questionnaire distributed at the end of the session, it was found that the duration of their study did not significantly impact their foreign/second language (L2) writing proficiency. Despite the possible limitations, the community service activity was a success and some aspects to improve are identified for the improved quality of future programmes

Abstract

The current community service project aimed to meet the needs of a private elementary school in Yogyakarta by providing picture storybooks for 5th-grade students to enhance their English vocabulary mastery through reading activities. Five storybooks were created using a modified 4D development model (Define, Design, and Develop), aligning with biblical lessons and the school’s values. The design and development of the storybooks were based on a needs assessment conducted through interviews with English teachers and four students, as well as a questionnaire for the students. The storybooks were used as complementary materials in English classes to foster student vocabulary acquisition and introduce moral values and virtues in life. Each storybook includes a narrative, illustrations to stimulate creativity and imagination, a moral value section, and a vocabulary list. The community service project highlights the potential of storybooks to foster language acquisition and moral development. Future community service opportunities are also available.
