Abstract

The trend of topics in language education research is affected by how authors convince readers about the issues being discussed. However, the persistence of the topic is not based on the number of scholars who have conducted the research, for instance, collaborative writing topics, but it focuses more on the newness to be contributed to the advancement of knowledge by indicating research gaps. Therefore, this qualitative study, which is specified into genre analysis, aims to describe the strategies for indicating research gaps and the area of gaps that are still needed to be fulfilled in the research of collaborative writing. A corpus consisting of 20 research article introductions (RAIs) published in highly reputable journals with high-impact factors was compiled and subjected to analyze, respectively (i.e., using the frameworks of Lim, 2012 and Ewijk, 2018) the types of research gap strategies and the areas of gaps that have been focused on by the authors. The findings show that the strategy of stating the absence of a specific area in the research of collaborative writing is employed in a vast majority (45.45%). Besides, the area of impact is found as the promising area of gap (occurred 24 times) that the authors tend to focus on. The pedagogical implications of this study are also discussed in this article.

Abstract

It is impossible to study a language without also studying its culture. When learning a language, intercultural sensitivity is necessary. Because English is taught to primary school pupils at a relatively young age, it is expected that studying English will instill international awareness. Data were gathered at several Bangkinang City elementary schools through observation, interviews, and documentation of chosen samples using purposive sampling methods. The results show that: (1) intercultural sensitivity has been applied in the teaching of English to elementary school students; (2) cultural learning is still taught in an integrated and implicit way; and (3) the challenges are the shortage of teachers, the characteristics of young students, the lack of a curriculum that explicitly supports cultural learning, and the limited resources. For pupils to develop into proficient intercultural speakers and engage in intercultural communication at a young age, instructors, and institutions of higher learning must improve the integration of intercultural sensitivity into English language instruction at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Two questions are to answer as the basis for data analysis and discussion, namely: (i) does English gerund belong to nominalization or verbalization?; and (ii) why do EFL learners in Indonesia academically need to understand the morpho-semantic properties of the English gerunds? The data presented and analyzed in this paper were collected by means of a short-limited research in the form of library study and supported by writers’ experience as the lecturers of English Grammar and Linguistics. The data analysis and discussion are based on relevant linguistic theories of morpho-syntactic properties of gerunds and those which belong to the principles of Pedagogical Grammar of EFL. The result of data analysis reveals that gerund in English is both nominalization and verbalization with certain morpho-semantic characteristics. As English gerunds are practically productive and linguistically unique, the EFL learners in Indonesia undoubtedly need the linguistic-grammatical knowledge and they are proceeded to have the ability to use gerunds grammatically. The idea delivered through this paper is believed as a significant note for EFL learners, particularly in Indonesia.
