Abstract

This research reports on the use of flash cards in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.The purpose of the research was to find out what extent the use of flashcards can improve thestudents’ vocabulary mastery. The study employed an action research in SDN 007 Bangun Purbawith 32 students as the sample. The study used two types of data collection techniques includingvocabulary tests and a four-week of classroom observation. The findings showed that there is animprovement in the students’ vocabulary mastery after the students were taught by using flashcards. The result of students’ mean score of vocabulary mastery in cycle 1 was 52.65 and that ofcycle 2 was 75.83. It means that it improved 23.18 which indicate the treatment is effective inimproving the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to improve the students’motivation and speaking skill through negotiated materials.Negotiated materials means that materiasl come from discussion by teacher and students and these negotiated materials which is based on their students’ study program (Accounting). Motivation means thosestudents’ effort plus desire in speaking activity or in other wordsstudents’ motivation in speaking. While speaking skill means that the capacity of the students to present their materials in front of the class.The participants of this research were the eleventh grade students of Accounting at SMKN 1 PasirPengaraianRokanHulu Riau. This class consisted of 38 students. One of the English teachers took part in this research as collaborator to assist the implementation of Negotiated Materials, particularly in observing the students’ activities in the teaching and learning process

Abstract

Permasalahan dari penelitian desktiptif ini adalah masih rendahnya kemampuan analisis mahasiswa semester tiga prodi pendidikan bahasa inggris Universitas Pasir Pengaraian dalam mengidentfikasi pesan moral di sebuah cerita naratif. Hal ini bisa saja terjadi diakibatkan karena kurangnya frekuensi dan latihan yang diberikan kepada mahasiswa untuk hal tersebut. Dari hasil penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa tidak semua dari mahasiswa tersebut memiliki kemampuan mengidentifikasi pesan moral dalam sebuah cerita naratif yang bagus. Hal ini dikarenakan oleh beberapa hal diantaranya kurangnya latihan maupun sulitnya mahasiswa tersebut untuk memahami isi dan makna cerita.

Abstract

English is interested by the young learners. They are fun when learning English. It is proved by many young learners follows our free courses in a village. It is located in Sarogodung Village, Sipirok, South tapanuli, North Sumatera. They do not receive English in their formal education. That is the reason of writer gave free courses for them. The aims of this article is to tell that the using appropriate method in learning English be key point approach for the young learners. English can be lovely subject for them. The method used in this article is Reenactment. It is a model reacted from the story. It can be as overt simulation. It used to suggest the young learners’ motivation in learning English. The method of the article is descriptive analysis. The sample is young learners consists of 25 people. They come from 7 up to 10 years old. The writer used interview, observation and test to get the data. The result of the article was the young learner enthusiast, full spirit, enjoy in learning English. They do not felt that English is bored. It depends on the suitable method and strategies in teaching and learning the English. Key word: Reenactment, young leaner, teaching method

Abstract

Microteaching is a teacher training technique in learning teaching skills. It employs real teaching situation for developing skills and helps to get deeper knowledge regarding the art of teaching with the significant reduction in the teaching complexities with respect to number of students in a class, scope of content, and timeframe, etc. Most of the pre-service teacher education programs widely use microteaching, and it is a proven method to attain gross improvement in the instructional experiences. Effective student teaching should be the prime quality of a teacher. The objective of this article is to analyze students’ teaching strategies used in micro teaching performances. The Population was English departments’ students from sixth semester class. Descriptive Qualitative is used in analyzed the data. Besides, the writer used observation checklist and video documentation of students’ micro teaching performance for collecting the data in gathering information on students’ teaching strategies. The writer found there were two types of teaching strategies used; direct instruction strategy and indirect instruction strategy. In direct instruction strategy, English students always used memory, cognitive and compensation strategies. Otherwise, metacognitive, affective and social strategies founds in terms of indirect strategy used by the students in micro teaching performance. Furthermore, the application of teaching strategies in teaching and learning process will help the teacher to convey information about teaching material to the students and to increase the learning outcomes. Keywords : Teaching Strategies, Micro Teaching Performance, direct instruction and indirect instruction strategies

Abstract

This Paper discusses about the analysis of Elements of Fiction in English movie. In this case, focuses on Plot and setting. Plot is the way in which a story's events are arranged, while setting is where the story takes place somer where and at some time. The English movie used in this paper was "Twilight". Twilight is a 2008 American vampire romance film based on Stephanie Meyer. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, this movie stars are Kristen Stervaft and Robert Pattinson. It is the first film in The Twilight Saga film series. This film focuses on the development of the relationship between Bella Swan (a teenage girl) and Edward Cullen (vampire), and the subsequent efforts of Cullen and his family to keep Swan safe from a coven of evil vampires. The technique of data analysis is descriptive qualitative. The steps involved analyzing the component of plot and setting. It was indicated from exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution and historical setting, geographical setting and physical setting. In collecting the data, the test and participant observation was used. The Sample in this paper was the third semester rvhich consists of 34 students. Based on the analysis. it can be concluded that 18 students (52,9%) vere good category in identifuing plot in twilight movie and (73,52%) u'ere also in good category in identifuing setting in twilight movie. In addition, watching English movie is one of the interesting and motivated media for students in learning introduction to literature, especially in analyzing elements of fiction.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to improve the students’ motivation and speaking skill through negotiated materials. Negotiated materials means that materials come from discussion by Lecturer and students and these negotiated materials which are based on their students’ study program (Management). Motivation means those students’ effort plus desire in speaking activity or in other words students’ motivation in speaking. While speaking skill means that the capacity of the students to present their materials in front of the class. The participants of this research were the Second Semester students of Management Study Program at University of Pasir Pengaraian, Rokan Hulu, Riau. This class consisted of 38 students. One of the English Lecturer took part in this research as collaborator to assist the implementation of Negotiated Materials, particularly in observing the students’ activities in the teaching and learning process. The method of this research is classroom action research that consisted of three cycles with nine meetings for each. The data were collected through observation checklist, interview, field notes and test.Based on the data analysis of three cycles, it can be concluded that the Negotiated Materials could better improve the students’ motivation and speaking skill. The speaking skill of the students was improved and the students could be involved in teaching and learning process, they became creative, they asked more questions, worked independently and has more aspirations. In addition, Negotiated Material can make the condition of teaching and learning process more communicative as well

Abstract

The Purpose of this Research was to know the skill of the Third Semester Students of English Study Program in University of PasirPengaraianin finding out moral value in narrative text. In narrative text there should be positive and negative massages that make students learn more about the characters’ behavior. The massage is about the rightness or wrongness of what common people say as moral value. It is what should be done and what should not be done, what is good or bad. The participants of this Research were the Third Semester students of English Study Program at University of PasirPengaraian, RokanHulu, Riau. This class consisted of 27 students. The research was conducted from October 2013 to January 2014.  The method of this research is descriptive research.To collect the data in the present study, the writer decided to use reading test in written form. The Instrument test include Fable, Legend and Fairy Tale. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded thatsome students were still confused in finding out Moral Value in Narrative Text. It can be seen from the Percentage of students’ skill. First, students who was in poor to average level skill are 7,40% (2 students).Second, students who was in average to good level skill are 85,20% (23 students). Third, Students who was in Good to Excellent level are 7,40% (2 students). In addition, The Third semester students’ skill in finding out Moral Value in Narrative text was in Average skill.   Keywords: Third semester students’skill, Narrative text, Moral Value

Abstract

In the field of education, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the learning process. Interaction and face-to-face processes in the classroom cannot take place as they should. Therefore, several government policies in educational institutions to stop the spread of COVID-19 include an appeal for all students and teachers to carry out the learning and teaching process from home. This of course raises new problems where the activities of teachers in preparing interactive learning strategies, techniques and media remotely through online media certainly cannot all be mastered. Moreover, interactive learning media that have so far relied a lot on software or programs on computers and the internet. For teaching staff or teachers in schools, especially in basic education, competence and skills in using interactive learning media are needed as are teachers at SDN 020 Rambah Hilir. In this training, the applications that were socialized were the Google Classroom and Zoom Meeting applications. With this training, the output targets achieved are increasing the knowledge, skills and competencies of SDN 020 Rambah Hilir teachers in using E-Learning as an interactive learning medium to support the teaching and learning process in the current New Normal Era.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out how is the skill of students of University of Pasir Pengaraian especially in third semester of English Study Program in students delivering impromptu speech. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data were gotten from the students in third semester. The data were taken through Speaking Test in impromptu speech from the video and transcript of the students itself. The steps in analyzing the data are collecting the data, analyzing the data, and displaying the result of the analysis. The third semester students of English Study Program of University of Pasir Pengaraian had average level in delivering impromptu speech. 18 students (54,54%) had the average score. 14 students (42,42%) had the fair score, and 1 student had the poor (3,03%). It can be concluded that the students’ skill in delivering impromptu speech was average.
