Abstract

During the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery period, rapidly developing information technology in recent years has directed the focus of several banks towards digital services, including through mobile banking applications. The rapid growth of the internet has changed the way companies connect with customers, as well as the banking business in Indonesia. The concept of "blessing" (barakah) must remain a priority for every Muslim, especially in financial institutions like banks. This paper aims to examine and analyze the mobile banking service model available on the BSI Mobile Banking application. In 2021, Bank Syariah Indonesia, also known as BSI, began merging three Islamic commercial banks in Indonesia. In order to support the development of information technology, particularly in the banking sector, BSI also created the BSI Mobile Banking application to facilitate transactions. The method used in this research is a qualitative study with a grounded research approach, also employing descriptive qualitative analysis methods. Although the service model in the BSI Mobile application has met customer needs and is in accordance with basic Sharia principles, many customers or members of the Muslim community have not used it to its full potential or are even unaware of the system or model and utilization of the mobile banking application. This could lead to the application not being used optimally. Based on the results of the research that the researcher has written, the existing BSI Mobile Banking service model should prioritize education and product socialization of BSI Mobile Banking, using methods that can provide understanding related to Islamic law concerning the principles of halal and haram. Regulations will be enforced due to legal threats and causes. It can be concluded that the wakalah contract in BSI Mobile Banking services is permissible in accordance with the conditions and pillars outlined in the DSN MUI Fatwa No. 10/DSN-MUI/VI/2000, and it aligns with the service model that operates in the use of the mobile banking application.

Abstract

This study assesses public interest in waqf insurance within Indonesia's Islamic life insurance sector, utilizing the Analytic Network Process (ANP) to evaluate awareness, trust, and perceptions. Qualitative data from interviews and document analysis supplement the ANP findings, offering a comprehensive understanding of public views. The study emphasizes the importance of innovative marketing strategies in promoting waqf insurance products, revealing that limited public awareness and understanding highlight the need for educational initiatives and targeted marketing. Trust and credibility also play a significant role in consumer decision-making in this niche market. The study suggests that improving public understanding, enhancing accessibility, and fostering trust through regulatory transparency are crucial for increasing participation in waqf insurance. Future study should focus on educational campaigns, transparent communication to build trust, and raise awareness of waqf insurance benefits.

Abstract

This study evaluates the "Surabaya Berdaya" program initiated by BAZNAS Surabaya as a model of productive zakat aimed at empowering mustahiq through sustainable economic development. Grounded in the Maqashid Shariah framework, particularly the objective of Hifz al-Mal(protection of wealth), this study investigates the effectiveness of the program in transforming zakat beneficiaries into independent economic actors. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through interviews with program implementers and mustahiq, direct observations, and documentation analyses. The interview data were further analyzed using open coding techniques, allowing the emergence of key themes that were subsequently mapped to empowerment indicators. Verbatim quotations selected from informants were included to enhance methodological rigor and authenticity. The programme offers business capital, vocational training, business equipment, and ongoing mentoring to support micro-entrepreneurship. Field findings indicated increased income levels, improved financial literacy, and enhanced self-confidence among participants. Empowerment was observed through multidimensional indicators, such as self-agency, skill acquisition, resilience, and cooperative networks. The analysis shows that zakat utilization in this program aligns effectively with Maqashid Shariah, when combined with ethical governance, contextual sensitivity, and post-disbursement support. However, disparities in outcomes highlight the need for adaptive mentoring and personalized empowerment pathways. This study contributes to the growing literature on Islamic social finance by offering empirical insights into the operationalization of Maqashid Shariah in urban zakat programmes. It recommends further research into the long-term impact, integration with digital zakat systems, and policy innovation to enhance program scalability and effectiveness.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the law governing interfaith marriage in Indonesia and its implications for the validity of marriage. This research departs from the juridical-normative approach. The data were gathered through an examination of the Marriage Law and a series of regulations, including fatwas issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the opinions of classical fiqh scholars on interfaith marriages. The result of this study indicates that the Marriage Law does not confirm the validity of interfaith marriages, while the fatwa of MUI and the Compilation of Islamic Law confirm that the marriage is invalid. This illegitimacy results from the application of the principle of safeguarding the public interest and avoiding harm, particularly with regard to religion. The implication is that marriages between Muslims and non-Muslims are considered illegal throughout Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose – Zakat institutions (ZIs) face managerial inefficiencies to the extreme seasonality of zakat fitr collection, which restricts distribution to short-term consumptive aid. This study analyzes LAZISMU's "year-round zakat fitr" program implementation at LAZISMU Ponorogo, East Java, as a fiqh-management innovation designed to address this operational challenge by harmonizing Sharia compliance with financial sustainability.Methodology – A qualitative, single-case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with LAZISMU management and Sharia experts, supplemented by analyses of institutional documents and fiqh rulings. An interactive qualitative model was used to examine the legal foundations and managerial implications of the program.Findings – This study finds that Sharia compliance is achieved through the wakalah contract rather than ta'jil (early payment). This legal framework allows for the temporal separation of fund collection from disbursements. Consequently, the institution successfully transforms its cash flow into a stable, continuous flow from a volatile seasonal lump sum, thereby resolving critical operational bottlenecks.Implications – The fiqh-management model enhances strategic planning and operational efficiency. By stabilizing cash flow, ZIs can shift their distribution strategy from purely reactive and consumptive to proactive, enabling the integration of zakat fitr funds into long-term productive empowerment programs without violating Sharia constraints.Originality – Unlike previous studies that predominantly focus on the distributional aspects of wakalah, this study offers a novel analysis of the wakalah contract as a strategic cash flow-smoothing tool in the zakat administration. It bridges classical Islamic jurisprudence with modern corporate finance theory and provides a replicable model for Islamic social finance institutions to overcome operational seasonality.
