Abstract

Cheating and plagiarism have been crucial issues among students studying either at high school or undergraduate levels. This present study aims to reveal the cheating and plagiarism practices among pre-service teachers in their undergraduate program at one Islamic university in Indonesia. As Muslim teacher candidates, the respondents are urged to uphold academic integrity and honesty. Thus, this study seeks to provide data on how serious the academic ethics immersed in Muslim pre-service teachers. The method implemented for this study was a cross-sectional survey. The respondents were students enrolled in the Faculty of Education, which comprises several departments in the education fields. Results indicate that respondents were recorded as having morally ethical on one aspect of academic integrities, 95% never paid someone else for the exam, 75% never changed answers after the marking process, and 50% declared rarely copy an answer. Yet, there was also a display of less ethical attitude on some other academic behaviors driven by cultural factors. Thus, some teaching implications are highlighted for teachers and students to combat cheating and plagiarism practices among pre-service teachers in Indonesian Islamic universities.

Abstract

Era 5.0 or Society 5.0 is a human-centered technology-based era that aims to create convenient and efficient living circumstances and provide further innovation in the life sustainability area. Era 5.0 is visualized as capable of creating a multinational society, whether in business, social, and educational environments. Thus, English should be noted as a crucial matter needed in communicating and takes part in living within era 5.0 in the future. The current research was conducted because of the limited exploration in the previous study that discusses online game VRChat as a learning medium to enhance students’ English speaking ability. Therefore, this paper aims to fill the gap by investigating and exposing the VRChat game’s value as a learning medium to improve students’ ability to speak English. Mixed method research was applied in the current study to analyze and ensure the VRChat game’s advantages for enhancing students’ speaking ability. Moreover, interviews and testing were used as the instrument in this research. A random sampling of four students who have done taking the FLSP (Foreign Learning for Specific Purposes) course as the current study’s subject. Additionally, the analysis was done using descriptive statistics and hierarchical charts using Nvivo 12 plus. This study showed the use of VRChat games as a learning medium increased students’ ability to speak English, specifically on their accuracy and fluency. This research implies that the VRChat game can support English teaching as the learning media, especially in speaking subjects.

Abstract

English teaching at primary school in Indonesia has experienced some changes in its curriculum, the K13 curriculum is the one that is implemented currently. However, there are some challenges that occur such as the time allocated for the English teaching until its textbook design. Henceforth, English teaching at primary school needs a new move. Another significant issue is related to the design of the curriculum that needs to be adjusted to each school context. In Islamic schools, English teaching finds its own issue, mainly on the cultural aspect—Western culture and ideology. Thus, this present research aims at developing an English workbook that is Muslim-friendly for their students. The method implemented in this study was Research & Development (R&D) with ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. This research has resulted that there were 5 major topics related to Islamic content developed, such as believing in Allah and Rasulullah, salah, al-Qur’an, noble characters, and the Prophets. Further, this research has resulted from a concept of workbook design, comprising brainstorming, short text, and activities that divided into three categories: cognitive activities (matching and listing), kinesthetic activities (drawing, coloring, and tracing), and the last one is vocabulary-based activity (word search and puzzle). All chapters were designed by considering the implemented curriculum at school partners. The finding of this research has shed light that integrating English and Islamic content can be a way for Islamic schools in Indonesia to build Islamic value to their students as well as to find the school's own character.

The subjects of this research were three elementary school teachers and six volunteer teachers from Indonesian students. This type of research is qualitative research. In collecting data, this research used interview and observation methods. The instruments used in this research include a list of interview questions for elementary school teachers and observation sheets to record the activities of English teaching assistants in the classroom. The approach used is descriptive because this research aims to describe an existing phenomenon: the English teaching assistant program for elementary school teachers at the Kuala Lumpur Indonesian School. Trials were carried out and expert in the field validated the learning design. After validation satge, the learning design was implemented with students for testing. The developed learning syntax was validated as effective. Then, the online-based learning media and lesson timeline are also declared valid. Thus, these two trials were deemed suitable for implememntation with students. Furthermore, the learning strategy design and results were validated and interesting based on positive responses from experts and students. It is concluded that the development results meet the research objectives. Abstract

This study employs an analysis of visual images in English textbooks used in Islamic-affiliated schools through the lens of Kachru’s three-circle model of English, which categorizes English-speaking countries into Inner, Outer, and Expanding circles. This study aims to explore how these images reflect and reinforce linguistic and cultural ideologies associated with each circle. A qualitative content analysis was implemented, focusing on the visual images within English textbooks, which were categorized based on the representation of cultural elements. Data analysis was implemented using a coding scheme and Critical Discourse Analysis framework, examining the power relations and ideological influences represented by the visual content of the textbook. Results show that inner circle culture was dominantly represented (67.9%) in the textbook of its visual use. Western-looking people, outfits, movies, and food represent the images used in the textbook. The finding suggests that textbooks used in English teaching at Islamic affiliated schools, or madrasas, must be carefully designed and selected to adjust students’ needs and school context, as teaching a foreign language can carry others’ ideologies and power.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of important aspects in learning a foreign language especially English. Good pronunciation can be easily processed by listeners, but inaccurated pronunciation can cause misunderstanding in communication. However, there are some difficulties found in EFL students in learning English pronunciation. Therefore, this research aims to develop Hijaiyah Flashcard as a medium in teaching English pronunciation which introduces several English consonants that have similar sound to the hijaiyah letters or Arabic consonants, while Indonesian students are familiar with the sound of hijaiyah letters. In developing the media, this research used Research and Development (R&D) as a research method. The subjects of the research were media expert, English teacher and second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Malang. The data were gained by doing the observation, interview and distributing questionnaires. Flashcards are developed and revised based on the assessment given. The validation scores obtained from media expert’s questionnaire is 82.5% and from English teacher is 100%. It means that the medium is feasible to use in teaching English pronunciation. In addition, the total score from students’ queastionnaire is 84,25 %. Thus, by introducing the similarity of sounds between English and Arabic consonants through Hijaiyah Flashcard, it can be a medium that teacher can use in teaching English pronunciation.

Abstract

The Quran is the oldest scripture revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him), and its originality has been preserved to this day, as evidenced by the language it employs—Arabic. It has become a popular reference for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, especially since the 9/11 tragedy. Not surprisingly, its native text, Arabic, is now widely available in translated versions, with English-translated Quran being the most frequent. The current study intends to investigate the meta-religious text concerning Prophets and the people mentioned in the Quran. The primary data of this study were obtained from the English-translated Quran by Talal Itani and analyzed with qualitative analysis software, NVivo 12 Plus, using the text search and query feature. Following that, discourse analysis was used to examine the text, social cognition, and sociocultural context. The results indicate that Moses ranked first in the Prophets category with 135 references, while the other prophets had a varied distribution: Abraham had 72, Jesus had 25, and Muhammad had 12 references. People of Israel were the most frequently discovered words with 42 mentions, followed by Jew, Christian, and Muslim. This research reveals surprising discursive evidence showing Muhammad and Muslims were the lowest of all categories. This means that the Quran is a revelation that is aimed not only for Muslims but also for all humanities, particularly the other Semitic religions: Christianity and Judaism.
