Abstract

This study employs an analysis of visual images in English textbooks used in Islamic-affiliated schools through the lens of Kachru’s three-circle model of English, which categorizes English-speaking countries into Inner, Outer, and Expanding circles. This study aims to explore how these images reflect and reinforce linguistic and cultural ideologies associated with each circle. A qualitative content analysis was implemented, focusing on the visual images within English textbooks, which were categorized based on the representation of cultural elements. Data analysis was implemented using a coding scheme and Critical Discourse Analysis framework, examining the power relations and ideological influences represented by the visual content of the textbook. Results show that inner circle culture was dominantly represented (67.9%) in the textbook of its visual use. Western-looking people, outfits, movies, and food represent the images used in the textbook. The finding suggests that textbooks used in English teaching at Islamic affiliated schools, or madrasas, must be carefully designed and selected to adjust students’ needs and school context, as teaching a foreign language can carry others’ ideologies and power.

Abstract

Globalization has urged many students across the globe to be proficient in achieving academic success and career, including those Muslim students studying in boarding school settings. Scholars have debated the intertwin between English and Western culture. However, empirical studies that discusses the relationship between English and Islam is not well explored. This study aims to provide new insights into this complex matter, particularly on how teachers’ beliefs and experiences in English teaching at Islamic-affiliated schools is delivered. The method applied in this present research is a qualitative design, particularly using a narrative case study. Applying the design, this study explores the participants’ personal stories that are unique and rich with the relationship of social, cultural, and political measurement in reshaping their experiences. Thus, to achieve the answers, four teachers’ belief and their pedagogical practices in teaching English to students at the International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) in Malang Region Indonesia were investigated through a semi-structured interview. Results reveal that English teaching at the schools was contextualized to the school vision and value which is to instill Islamic principles; teachers believe English has conflicting norms to Muslim students’ values; English activities are massively exposed to the Muslim students through several English enrichment programs; and English is prepared for students to be both competent in their future professional works and to spread the message of Islam. This finding has shed light that English teaching at Islamic-based schools can be contextualized to students’ needs and school cultures. Thus, this study contributes to explaining how teachers’ belief shapes their English teaching practices through designing Islamic pedagogy for their Muslim students.

Abstract

The analysis of using a video blog (Vlog) in language learning has been widely done. However, most of the studies only focus on investigating the students’ perception of Vlog. This study attempted to analyze the use of Vlog in improving students’ oral language production. In addition, the students’ perception after applying Vlog in language learning was also investigated. The complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF) were the aspects analyzed from students’ performance. Further, a mixed-method was applied in this study. This study involved six participants (3 male and 3 female) who were the students of the English Language Education Department of a private university in Malang, Indonesia. A speaking test which was in the forms of vlogs and semi-structured interviews were used as the instruments for the data collection. The quantitative data from the test were calculated by using formulas of CAF and further analyzed by the descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data from the interview were analyzed to explore the benefits and challenges of learning with vlogs. The findings showed the increasing mean of the students’ accuracy while their fluency and complexity decreased. There were several factors that might impact the findings. Those were; planning time, pressures, restrictions in terms of time, and task repetition. The benefits and challenges of learning with Vlogs were discussed in this paper.

Abstract

The Quran is the oldest scripture revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him), and its originality has been preserved to this day, as evidenced by the language it employs—Arabic. It has become a popular reference for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, especially since the 9/11 tragedy. Not surprisingly, its native text, Arabic, is now widely available in translated versions, with English-translated Quran being the most frequent. The current study intends to investigate the meta-religious text concerning Prophets and the people mentioned in the Quran. The primary data of this study were obtained from the English-translated Quran by Talal Itani and analyzed with qualitative analysis software, NVivo 12 Plus, using the text search and query feature. Following that, discourse analysis was used to examine the text, social cognition, and sociocultural context. The results indicate that Moses ranked first in the Prophets category with 135 references, while the other prophets had a varied distribution: Abraham had 72, Jesus had 25, and Muhammad had 12 references. People of Israel were the most frequently discovered words with 42 mentions, followed by Jew, Christian, and Muslim. This research reveals surprising discursive evidence showing Muhammad and Muslims were the lowest of all categories. This means that the Quran is a revelation that is aimed not only for Muslims but also for all humanities, particularly the other Semitic religions: Christianity and Judaism.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of important aspects in learning a foreign language especially English. Good pronunciation can be easily processed by listeners, but inaccurated pronunciation can cause misunderstanding in communication. However, there are some difficulties found in EFL students in learning English pronunciation. Therefore, this research aims to develop Hijaiyah Flashcard as a medium in teaching English pronunciation which introduces several English consonants that have similar sound to the hijaiyah letters or Arabic consonants, while Indonesian students are familiar with the sound of hijaiyah letters. In developing the media, this research used Research and Development (R&D) as a research method. The subjects of the research were media expert, English teacher and second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Malang. The data were gained by doing the observation, interview and distributing questionnaires. Flashcards are developed and revised based on the assessment given. The validation scores obtained from media expert’s questionnaire is 82.5% and from English teacher is 100%. It means that the medium is feasible to use in teaching English pronunciation. In addition, the total score from students’ queastionnaire is 84,25 %. Thus, by introducing the similarity of sounds between English and Arabic consonants through Hijaiyah Flashcard, it can be a medium that teacher can use in teaching English pronunciation.

Abstract

Conversion is not only observed as a theological change in someone’s belief and behavior, but  socio-cultural change that affects identity formation. This present study is conducted qualitatively involving ten Muslim converts who are associated with the white Western people. It aims at investigating their identity formulation on the process of becoming and being Muslims in the Western context in Australia, Sydney especially. Also, this research is to find the comparison between male and female converts’ identity formation. Results show that social challenge has the biggest part of the Muslim converts’ identity formation. Further, the study pictures different pattern of social challenges between male vs male and male vs female Muslim converts that leads to their identity formation. This study has highlighted that Muslim converts in the Western context have been challenged more by the socio-religious reality than faith-related practices. This study suggests that the Muslim community and the born Muslim family living in Australia are encouraged to set a program to address this tension.
