Abstract

This research aims to evaluate students' conceptual understanding in the field of physics, focusing on the concepts of heat and temperature, using the Person Diagnostic Map (PKMAPs) approach. This method allows individual assessment of students' conceptual understanding, going beyond the limitations of conventional analysis methods that focus on groups. This research used a survey involving eight students from a private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data was collected through a multiple-choice test of 20 items, processed using Ms. Excel and Winsteps 4.6.1. The research results show that PKMAPs are effective in identifying individual student understanding, including detecting "correct" response patterns resulting from guessing or cheating, as well as "incorrect" response patterns caused by incompetence or inaccuracy. This information allows educators to determine appropriate teaching methods, including remediation, re-teaching, or enrichment, according to each student's individual needs. This research concludes that using the Person Diagnostic Map in the context of physics education provides a more personal and effective approach to analyzing students' conceptual understanding. This method provides deeper insight into students' individual strengths and weaknesses, facilitating more focused and effective learning planning.

Abstract

Renewable energy is a global concern and should be incorporated into education to raise awareness among younger generations, including in physics education. Educators have made various efforts to raise awareness of the importance of pursuing renewable energy. A breakthrough sought in this research is to incorporate collaborative learning into the science-technology-engineering-art-mathematics (STEAM) approach. Integrating STEAM into collaborative learning can simultaneously develop critical and creative thinking skills by exploring local resources to become renewable energy sources. The research involved 36 high school students who met the criteria for having a smartphone and accessing a reliable internet connection. These conditions are designed to facilitate students' producing essays and posters exploring renewable energy sources in their local area. The research design employs a one-group pretest-posttest approach to assess the effectiveness of this STEAM-based collaborative learning process. The data collected from tests that have undergone t-tests and N-gain analysis, triangulated with observation data and questionnaires, illustrates the progress made in improving students' critical and creative thinking abilities. In conclusion, the implementation of STEAM-based collaborative learning demonstrates the highest level of achievement in creative thinking. It enables the production of innovative mini-projects that critically analyze local resources available for national energy sources.

Abstract

Each school in Gugus PAUD 1, Gunungpati Sub-district, Semarang City already has a Waste Bank, although it is small and simple.  The waste collected comes from around the school and store from each student. The collected waste then sold to collectors. The existence of this waste bank makes it possible to recycle it into playground equipment/games or learning tools, because learning in PAUD is playing while learning. The purpose of the Community Service activities in Gugus PAUD 1 Gunungpati District Semarang City is to improve the competence of PAUD teachers in recycling paper and plastic waste into play tools and educational games. The method applied was theory and practice. Evaluation was conducted from administrative evaluation in the form of attendance and participation. Academic evaluation by project assessment then applications in the teaching and learning process. The results are PAUD teachers' skills and understanding of recycling paper and plastic waste increased after the workshop, as well as attitudes and behavior towards waste recycling increased, all in the high category.

Abstract

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in male worldwide. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) offers cancer treatment with minimum side effects. BNCT is radiation therapy that uses the 10B isotope and neutron beams which can selectively destroy tumor cells. The resulting radiation dose cannot be measured directly, so a computational method is needed to calculate the dose. The aim of this research is to determine the effective boron concentration, determine the optimal direction of irradiation, and determine the duration of irradiation time at an effective boron concentration for BNCT of prostate cancer. The computational method used is the Monte Carlo method with PHITS Version 3.32 software. The phantom used is an adult male ORNL phantom. The type of prostate cancer modeled is adenocarcinoma with an intermediate risk group. The neutron source is a 30 MeV cyclotron. Variations in 10B concentrations used were 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 µg/g boron/cancer tissue. The variations in direction used are: anterior-posterior, lateral-anterior oblique, and left-lateral. This study yield that the effective boron concentration used for BNCT in prostate cancer is 150 µg/g boron/cancer tissue. The most optimal radiation direction for BNCT of prostate cancer is the anterior-posterior direction. The duration of irradiation time required for a boron concentration of 150 µg/g boron/cancer tissue is 1 hour 16 minutes 10 seconds.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) in improving students’ statistical graph interpretation skills through a rigorous Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, the research involved 120 undergraduate students from four classes, equally divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental groups received TEL-based instruction featuring interactive graph visualizations and automated feedback, while the control groups followed conventional lectures and exercises over seven sessions. Data were collected using a 60-item multiple-choice test covering bar charts, histograms, boxplots, and scatterplots, which was content-validated by experts and trialed for clarity, yielding high reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.833). Construct validity was ensured through unidimensionality and invariance testing, confirmed by eigenvalue and DETECT analysis. Data analysis applied IRT to calibrate item parameters discrimination (a), difficulty (b), and guessing (c) and to estimate students’ latent abilities (θ). Model comparison identified the 3PL model as the best fit, capturing both difficulty variation and guessing behavior. Calibration results showed that most items exhibited satisfactory psychometric quality, supporting the robustness of the instrument. Findings revealed that TEL groups achieved a nearly one-logit gain in ability from pretest to posttest, significantly higher than the minimal improvement observed in the control groups, as confirmed by independent t-tests and normalized gain analysis. These results indicate that TEL substantially strengthens students’ ability to interpret statistical graphs while demonstrating the diagnostic value of IRT in evaluating both item quality and learning effectiveness.
