Abstract

This study investigates the representation of love in Nizar Qabbani's poetic anthology “Qamus al-Ashiqin” through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, with an emphasis on its mythical layer in the context of Arab culture. The research explores the use of signs and symbols that denote, connote, and mythologize love in Qabbani's poetry. Using a qualitative descriptive method and textual analysis, this study focuses on the poem titled “Qamus al-Ashiqin”. The data were collected through documentation, quoting, and close reading. Findings show that Qabbani presents love not only as a personal emotion but also as a cultural ideology, often embodying sacrifice, longing, and transcendence. The mythical meanings embedded in the poems reflect broader Arab cultural values concerning love. This research contributes to Arabic literary studies by contextualizing semiotic analysis in Arabic poetry and offers a fresh perspective on Barthes' theory within a non-Western literary tradition.

Abstract

PurposeAmong the controversial issues in the 20th  century, even today, was the Islam's relationship with modern Western culture, whether it should be rejected, accepted, or critically accepted (adaptive adoption patterns). This article discussed this topic based on a study of Salah Asuhan by Abdoel Moeis as Idonesian Novel which was published in 1928. MethodThe study was conducted using a qualitative research method based on literature research enriched by a study of scientific literature. The theory used is the theory of postcolonialism and the construction of religious moderation of Islam. Results/findingsThis research found that the Salah Asuhan Novel was a construction of the author's moderate attitude towards Islam, its relationship with modern Western culture. In it, there was not only Moeis resistance to modern Western culture as a domination and a product of colonialism, but also adaptive adoption (hybridity), in which modern Western culture in general had to be handled by sorting/selecting. The pattern of Islamic moderation in the sense of a middle way was mostly adopted by Moeis,  although moderation was also adopted in the sense of emphasizing on upholding justice, considering the public benefit, especially eliminating inhuman difficulties as a point of view.  ConclusionIn cultural issues, Moeis in the novel tended to have to not fully accept modern Western culture. For example on science and technology, humanism, including feminism, the importance of legal evidence such as marriage with a legal marriage certificate, and educational patterns that emphasize religion, but also modern science.

Abstract

The thought and practice of Islamic politics are highly diverse, spanning various historical periods that have shaped the Islamic world. Therefore, it cannot be understood through a single perspective that may lead to biased judgments, as often done by the West. It is undeniable that throughout its history, Islam has given rise to a variety of political practices, ranging from authoritarian to democratic. This article aims to examine the treasury of classical and medieval Islamic political thought related to several issues such as the relationship between religion and state, the legitimacy of authoritarianism, forms of theocratic government, democracy, and aristocracy, as well as issues concerning the ideal society. Through this exposition, it is hoped that a more comprehensive understanding of Islamic political concepts developed during classical and medieval periods and their relevance to the present can be attained.

Abstract

Unlike the pattern of Islamic society in Java, which has long been the focus of study, the pattern of Islam in Sunda seems to receive less serious attention. Writing motivated by this reason, among others, found that the Sundanese community in general can be divided into two parts: Priangan and Pakulonan. In terms of Islam, they can be divided into three parts, as Geertz categorizes Javanese society: Santri, Abangan, and Priayi. The Santri segment of Sundanese society is divided into two parts: traditional Muslims and Orthodox or modernist. Generally, syncretism is one of the characteristics of the majority of Sundanese Islam. Even in Sundanese society, there are pre-Islamic religions that have survived to this day, although some are influenced by Islam in certain aspects, such as "Javanese Sunda Religion" and "Sunda Wiwitan" Religion. In addition, Sundanese society also serves as the base for Shia Islam, the basis for modern Islamic thought and movements such as Salman Mosque, and one of the bases for Islamic fundamentalism.

Abstract

Since the polarization between liberal Islam exponent and the conservative Islam circle happened, hermeneutic become very popular among literate Moslem in Indonesia. For conservative circle, Islamic liberal opinions like pluralism, liberalism, secularism, and marriage in different religion begin from using of hermeneutic. Hermeneutic even also looked into dangerous in interpreting Qur’an or hadith. Though, there are proportionate ta’wil by hermeneutic in Islam, what up to now still become the part of traditional science of Islam. This Article find that much similarity between west modern theory of hermeneutic and ta’wil in tradition of Islam or Arab. As a modern hermeneutic, theory of ta’wil with its typology tend to subjective, even relative. There is also very taking care of objectivity by emphasizing text as base (agreed in language), context, and its author context. There is a moderate theory which though take care of the objectivity of text, but do not deny that result of ta’wil is not sterile at all from relativity element. In consequence, it is difficult to be said that hermeneutic is the non-Islamic west theory, and the primary factor of contemporary conservative circle deduction to hermeneutic in fact is its literal tendency.

Abstract

The study of ethics, particularly from the perspective of hadith in a modern context, is crucial as it represents the second source of Islamic teachings after the Qur'an. An ethical study from the hadith perspective is relevant for understanding Islamic moral teachings and their application in daily life. Hadith, being the second source of Islamic guidance after the Qur'an, provides profound and relevant ethical guidance for various aspects of life, including addressing moral and social challenges in the modern era. The importance of studying ethics from the hadith perspective becomes more urgent when related to the situation in Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country currently undergoing reforms in politics, economy, social, and cultural spheres. These reforms are a response to the economic crisis that triggered a political crisis, with moral crises such as corruption, collusion, and nepotism often seen as primary causes of these issues. In this context, understanding and applying the ethical values found in hadith can significantly contribute to restoring morality and integrity in society. This paper aims to explore how ethical teachings from hadith can be applied to address the moral and social challenges facing Indonesia today. Through text analysis of hadith and social-political context, this research will examine how hadith principles can help address moral crises and strengthen reform efforts across various sectors. This paper is expected to provide insights into the relevance of hadith ethics in the modern context and its contribution to solving moral issues in Indonesia.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find deep information about cultural values contained in al-Kitab fi Ta‘allum al-‘Arabiyyah and al-‘Arabiyyah bayna Yadaik  related to women and marriage. This study used a qualitative approach with the content analysis method by Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis which is limited to the linguistic aspect. The text describes the problems faced by women regarding the culture of marriage and reveals cultural values related to the role of women in society and their position in marriage. The result of this study confirmed that al-Kitab fi Ta'allum al-'Arabiyyah and al-'Arabiyyah bayna Yadaik represent women and their position in marriage and society with a multi-perspective way.  This study is important to provide critical thinking about women's issues and marriage in Arabic language teaching. Furthermore, the student and teacher will have an awareness and understanding of cultural differences to increase their ability to communicate with Arab society.

Abstract

Although terrorism belongs to many ideologies and religions in the world, now, terrorism in the name of Islam has swept across many regions of the world, from East to West, and has also been widely studied. However, studies on its relationship with Arabic language are lacking or even non-existent. Therefore, this article bases its exploration on a literature review methodology with a semiotic structuralism theory approach. This research found that based on Imam Samudra's book, JI/NII terrorist circles use Arabic loanword far more than mainstream moderate Islam, especially in social issues. This shows that the more Arabic loanwords, especially in Islamic socio-political texts, the more fundamentalist they are. In Imam Samudra's book, a number of Arabic words were also found which were given new connotations of a jihadist/terrorist fundamentalist nature. In addition, Imam Samudra's understanding of many Arabic loanwords such as jihad fi sabilillah (jihad in the way of Allah) is also wrong because it is not based on the context of the text and its social context as well as a standard methodology of interpretation in Islam. His jihad understanding cannot be accounted for in Islamic science and language.
