Abstract

Abstract

Pemalang District, Pemalang Regency, Central Java Province, as the district's capital, has experienced rapid economic and population growth. This has resulted in increased exploitation and degradation of groundwater quality, with groundwater extraction increasing from 91,856 m³ to 133,708 m³. There was an average decrease in groundwater levels of 40-70 cm from 2020 to 2023, and an increase in nitrate and chloride levels in groundwater was recorded from 2021 to 2023. To maintain the availability of groundwater that is suitable for use, efforts are needed to prevent groundwater contamination in vulnerable areas. The approach applied to examine groundwater vulnerability to contamination is the DRASTIC method. The research location is a coastal area composed of quaternary deposits with lithology consisting of sand and gravel in the south and clay and silt in the north. It has a shallow groundwater depth and a groundwater flow pattern that flows from south to north. The results of the geospatial analysis revealed two zones of groundwater vulnerability to contamination, based on the DRASTIC Index value, consisting of moderate vulnerability   (>106-146) and high vulnerability (>146-186). There were 67.4% of high vulnerability zones in this research area, spread from the central part, which is Wanamulya Village, to the southern part, which is Surajaya Village.

Abstract

Groundwater is the primary water resource used for domestic, industrial, and agricultural needs for the community in the Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin area. The urbanization rate has increased since the 1970s and has made massive use of groundwater, causing environmental problems, including the quality and quantity of groundwater. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal groundwater fluctuation trends based on the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and recharge rate estimation using the water table fluctuation (WTF) method. The groundwater level data were collected from monitoring wells across the study area during 2018-2022, particularly emphasizing 8 wells representing recharge, transition, and discharge areas. The results showed that the groundwater fluctuation pattern generally followed the season. During the rainy season from January to April, groundwater reached the shallowest level and began to decline gradually when it entered the dry season from May to October. Groundwater recharge rate was estimated to vary from 171.49 to 1,505.56 mm/year. Meanwhile, the Mann-Kendall test showed that most of the Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin area did not experience significant fluctuation trends, except for two monitoring wells in the center of Yogyakarta City which had increasing groundwater level trends. The rising groundwater levels were expected to be caused by urban wastewater recharge. This study has provided a new description and insights into spatiotemporal changes in the groundwater table and the quantification of groundwater recharge.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Industrial expansion and the increasing use of groundwater in Kendari City have heightened the risk of water table decline and seawater intrusion, particularly in areas adjacent to Kendari Bay. This study aims to assess and map the vulnerability to seawater intrusion in the Kendari Bay region using a modified GALDIT method, supported by field observations and hydrogeochemical analyses for validation. The results indicate that zones with very low to low vulnerability are predominantly located in the western part of the study area, which is characterized by higher topographic slopes. In contrast, areas with very high to high vulnerability are concentrated along the coastal zone, where elevations are relatively low and proximity to the shoreline increases exposure to seawater intrusion. Validation through field and chemical data confirmed the reliability of the vulnerability zoning, as wells situated in high-vulnerability zones consistently exhibited seawater intrusion signatures, whereas those in low-vulnerability zones showed typical freshwater characteristics.

Abstract

Tieng village and its surrounding areas in Kejajar District, Wonosobo Regency, are identified as regions with a relatively high risk of landslide hazards. This research aims to examine the geological conditions influencing landslide occurrences and to develop a landslide susceptibility zonation map within the study area. Methods of landslide mapping using statistical method weight of evidence (WoE), with parameters including slope, lithology and grade of weathering, distance from lineaments, distance from rivers, and land use. All parameters were classified into several class and spatially processed using ArcGIS software. Then, these maps were overlaid and analyzed based on contrast weight values to produce the final landslide susceptibility zonation map. The resulting susceptibility map categorized into four zones: very low, low, medium, and high landslide susceptibility. The very low landslide susceptibility zone is generally found in the eastern part of the area, the low susceptibility zone is in the western and eastern parts, the medium susceptibility zone occurs in the eastern and southern parts, while the high susceptibility zone is distributed in the southeastern, central, and eastern parts of the study area. The parameters that have the most influence on landslide susceptibility in the research area based on their level of influence from strongest to weakest are land use, distance from lineament, distance from river, lithology and grade of weathering and slope. The accuracy of the landslide susceptibility map was assessed using the Success Rate Curve (SRC) and Prediction Rate Curve (PRC) validation. The Area Under Curve (AUC) values obtained from the SRC and PRC analyses were 0.765 for SRC and 0.741 for PRC, respectively, indicating a good level of model performance.
