Abstract

Culinary practices have always been considered as social and cultural activities signifying ideas of continuity and transformation regarding one‟s culture and identity. As migration happens, people move from their hometown and recreate familiar food and flavors in their new home. Therefore, the study of culinary practices will reveal the dynamics of constant negotiation between having to trace back the familiar taste, for example by using inherited recipes, with the necessity to innovate and reproduce meals from their hometown with new ingredients and materials found in the new place. Furthermore, in an urban setting that has been heavily influenced with a variety of culinary practices from other locales in Indonesia or from other countries, culinary practices in Jakarta could no longer be analyzed as merely everyday activities as they have become an arena of contestation and negotiation. This research discusses how two up-scale restaurants, Suntiang (a Padangnese-Japanese fusion restaurant) and Marco (a self-proclaimed Padang peranakan restaurant), re-inscribe Padangnese cuisines and make new meanings on „old‟ traditional delicacies.

Abstract

East Asian television dramas from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have become a significant part of the cultural globalization process in the Indonesian mediascapes since the 1990s. The Indonesian cultural, political and social specificities have created significant distinctions on how these television dramas reconstruct the shared imagination of (East) Asia in comparison with how it is in other locales. The research findings have extended the discussion of geocultural/linguistic regions, which argues that the success of a television drama in one region, for example telenovelas in Latin America, is affected by a similar cultural and linguistic background. It echoes that the Asian case should be analyzed in a distinctive framework compared to other regional case studies, specifically in the circulation and distribution process. The research concerns a multi-layered analysis that draws on the methodological resources of textual analysis and institutional research, which contextualized these television dramas culturally, historically and geographically. The aim is to understand how the two primary media technologies in the in-between space of production and consumption, namely television and pirated DVDs, work as intermediaries and also as gatekeepers since they precondition commonalities between these television dramas with local expectations.

Abstract

In 2022, based on Google Trends tools, Indonesia is ranked third as the country with the most searches related to Japanese anime. Wibu is a term that refers to someone who is outside Japan but likes and even tends to be obsessed with the culture of that country. This research aims explore how stereotypes of Wibu in Indonesia are constructed by digital media, specifically YouTube. Research findings show that Wibu in Indonesia is stereotyped as "smelling of onions", "Wibu Nolep", "perverted Wibu" and “pshycopath Wibu.” By conducting textual analysis on YouTube videos that are related to Wibu content, we argue that the construction of Indonesian Wibu’s stereotypes are done through narrative and visual elements in the videos. Based on this research, researchers discovered the role of YouTube in affirming the stereotypical construction of Wibu in Indonesia with ambiguous representations.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the creative process of Dede Eri Supria (DES) in the context of the development of Indonesian painting, showing the structure, style and thematics that represent the impact of development policies and New Order cultural politics. The discussion of this creative process uses Gramsci's concept of hegemony, namely the dominant group's ideology, to perpetuate its power through its apparatus spread throughout civil society, most of which are intellectual groups. This ideological hegemony also occurred in Indonesian painting during the New Order era. This article uses a qualitative description method to reveal and discuss data obtained through interviews and literature studies. Based on these methods and concepts, the following results were obtained. First, DES's creativity was influenced by his social environment with exponents of the New Fine Arts Movement (GSRB), which resulted in his critical views on social and cultural problems and ideological problems in the creative environment of ASRI students and GSRB activists. Second, the DES creative process is a creative reaction to express "freedom" in work to fight the dominant ideology that dominates art. Third, through a creative space free from dominant art ideologies, DES and GSRB exponents display their works at the TIM GSRB Exhibition. Fourth, the social, cultural and political development conditions during the New Order era impacted the socio-economic lives of marginalized urbanites, becoming one of the stimuli for the DES creative process. Fifth, DES in painting uses various visual references but does not copy them outright and creates a new reality in the space of his canvas so that his paintings represent a new type of art that is original and represents the spirit of his time, namely the hyperrealism style.

Abstract

As the transnational marriages rise among Indonesians, family vlogs on transnational marriages perform as an indicator of their existence on YouTube. Through daily vlogs, it captures the complexity of transnational family’s life. The mixed culture and identity have become a great challenge for spouses to perform their everyday life, especially for Indonesian woman, who come as a migrant to follow their partners abroad. As a migrant who live in a foreign country, they have to adjust to the environment but as a part of transnational marriage they are carrying a responsibility to pass over both her and her husband’s culture and identity to the family. This paper will examine two YouTube accounts of transnational marriage families which are Kimbab Family and Pita’s Life. Through vlogs, the women negotiate their Indonesian identity in practicing the family. This study uses a textual approach to explain the construction of Indonesian identity in transnational marriages based on their everyday life captured from the vlogs. The result of this research is both Kimbab Family and Pita’s Life representing Indonesian identity through the articulation of nationalism by participating on Indonesian events, vlogs as a ‘translanguaging space’, and finally through food as the articulation of Indonesian diversity. It shows that the identity of transnational marriages are fluid and continues to go through negotiation process.

Abstract

The representation of race and sexuality particularly African Americans in Hollywood has always been problematic. In its development Hollywood has been including more representations of African-Americans. With New Black Realism, which started in the midst 90s, the African-American communities change the screen with a more empowering portrayal of the community. A common theme is usually focusing on African-American youth in surviving and negotiating with the current issues concerning race. The question to be asked is to what extent do these changes actually challenge stereotypes? By analyzing two Hollywood films, Pariah (2011) and Moonlight (2016), this article looks into the representation of African American LGBTQ characters to see how the films problematize or affirm stereotypes that have been constructed by mainstream Hollywood. By analyzing narrative elements and the cinematography elements, this research reveals even though the films try to negotiate with stereotypes, they eventually affirms how stereotypes of African Americans LGBTQ are still seen in negative way.

Abstract

Accelerationism plays a significant role in advancing scientific knowledge and the framework of human existence. Its contributions are manifested in facilitating convenient and swift access to information sources, digital communication, and the availability of diverse technological tools aiding various professions. On the contrary, accelerationism leads to a series of disparities between capitalism and modernism. It also results in humans losing control over themselves, time, and life and even contributes to destroying species and the environment. The situational analysis of accelerationism in this study aligned with Liu's findings in "On the Accelerationist Critique of the Problem of Capitalist Modernity" (2022), highlighting the inseparable dual nature of accelerationism concerning capitalism and modernism. The fluid and straightforward concept of accelerationism can be observed in popular cultural products such as movies. Movies like Interstellar (2014) and The Platform (2019) encapsulate the concept of accelerationism within the scope of capitalism from varying perspectives. This content-analysis study aimed to distinguish the interpretations of accelerationism within Interstellar and The Platform as portrayed through scenes, dialogues, and other cinematic elements. The findings of the study, which employed a qualitative descriptive approach, were the interpretation of accelerationism within certain scenes of Interstellar depicting Earth's demise and the agenda of rescuing humanity by journeying to another planet. Accelerationism was also interpreted through dialogues and metaphorical scenes illustrating the concept of the capitalist food-chain mechanism in the prison cells of The Platform.
