Abstract

A community service about the education of Gema Cermat has been conducted in Lebah Sempaga village, West Lombok, NTB. The objective of these activities was to increase people’s knowledge and skills regarding the use of medicines in a right and rational way. The community service was held in three main steps of Community Based Interactive Method, namely presentation of the materials of Gema Cermat by pharmacist leader in NTB, assessments of people’s knowledge before and after socialization by using questionnaires, and evaluation of the participant skills in medicine identifications through the presentation of the participant representations. 23 people are participating in these activities, dominated by females with the age of about 29-50 years old. However, only 13 of them were finishing the questionnaires. Overall, the result of assessments, as well as the evaluation, showed that there was a noticeable improvement in the understanding of people about Gema Cermat, the precise and rational ways in using medicines, with the percentage of 16% increase.  Hopefully, people in that area could spread the information to others so that the side effects due to the non-appropriate use of medicines will reduce

Abstract

Anti-inflammatory medications are necessary to treat excessive inflammation reactions due to injury, infection, or irritation. The emergence of several adverse effects associated with synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs has prompted the continued use of anti-inflammatory agents derived from natural products with low side effects and a high therapeutic effect. While it is well established that the seeds of the Makassar fruit (Brucea javanica (L.) Merr.)  have anti-inflammatory activity, the optimal concentration of Makasar fruit seed extract for anti-inflammatory activity is unknown. This study aims to determine the optimal Makassar fruit seed extract concentration as an in vitro anti-inflammatory. The seeds of the Makasar fruit were extracted using the sonication method (3 x 35 minutes) in 96% ethanol and then concentrated using a rotary evaporator. The secondary metabolites of Makasar fruit seed extract were then identified in the test tubes, and the anti-inflammatory activity was determined using the protein denaturation inhibition method. The results indicated that the extract produced had a yield of 10.03%. The Makassar fruit seed extract contains secondary metabolites of phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Makasar fruit seed extract exhibited the optimum anti-inflammatory activity at a concentration of 1%, with a 55.47% inhibition of protein denaturation.

Abstract

Brucea javanica (L) Merr is a local plant used traditionally for diabetic medication in Lombok Island. The B. javanica seed has been recognized to have an antidiabetic effect, while the impact of the leave extract was understudied. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of B. javanica leaves infusion on the blood glucose level of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. B. javanica leaves extract were applied by soaking leaves into hot water (95°C) to obtain the extract concentration of 5% (w/v). This experiment provides four treatments to rats within 15 days with five replicates for each treatment. The treatments for rats were K1 a positive control, K2 a negative control, K3 a healthy control, and P1 treated with leave infused water. The diabetic condition for K1, K2, and P1 was induced with an intravenous injection of 125 mg/kgBW alloxan monohydrate to the rats. After stable diabetic condition, K1 rats were treated with Glibenclamide (0,25 mg/kgBW), K2 rats were untreated, P1 rats were administered with leaves infused water of B. javanica (L) Merr 3 ml/day. K3 rats were uninduced and untreated. The hypoglycemic effect was observed by estimating the fasting blood glucose level of the rats every three days. After 15 days of treatments, P1 rats blood glucose level reduced by the 13,30%, while K1 rats 22,04%. The decrease in blood glucose level of both K1 and P1 rats have not reached the average blood glucose level of healthy rats. The result of the statistical analysis showed the infused extract effect was not significantly differed compared to positive control (P < 0.05).

Abstract

Abstract

Anti-inflammatory drugs are needed to overcome excessive inflammatory reactions that can interfere with activities. The existence of side effects in the use of synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs causes the search for natural drugs with high therapeutic effects and low side effects to continue. Seeds of Makassar (Brucea javanica (L.) Merr) plant are known to have anti-inflammatory activity. Topical anti-inflammatory administration is currently being developed because it can minimize side effects compared to oral. This study aimed to formulate 96% ethanol extract of Makasar fruit seeds in the form of an emulgel and to determine the physical properties and anti-inflammatory activity of the emulgel in vitro. Makasar fruit seeds were extracted by sonication method using 96% ethanol solvent (3 x 35 minutes). The extract was then formulated into an emulgel preparation with an extract concentration of 1%. Emulgel was then tested for its physical properties and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro using protein denaturation inhibition method. The results showed that the physical properties of emulgel base (F0), extract emulgel (F1), and Na-diclofenac emulgel (F2) met the requirements for homogeneity, pH, adhesion, spreadability, and viscosity tests. F0, F1, and F2 had inhibition percentages of 3.74±1.58%,; 23.07±0.72%; and 33.49±0.29, respectively. According to one-way ANOVA statistical test, the three tested groups had significant differences.

Abstract

Dyeing woven yarn using natural dyes is increasingly popular, but the process is complicated, color consistency is low, fades easily and color choices are limited. Service activities in Sukarara Village in the form of socialization and assistance on coloring techniques using pH-based anthocyanins (acidity degrees) were carried out as a solution to these problems. By varying the pH of the anthocyanin solution using buffer 2-10 followed by fixation/mordanting, more color variations (one type of plant extract), consistency and color resistance were achieved. The activity partners are 20 members of the Subahnale Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis). Activities include FGD, interviews, socialization, mentoring and evaluation. The activity was carried out well without significant obstacles with an increase in the average value of partners from 55 to 87. It is hoped that Pokdarwis can synergize with the village government for the sustainability of activities so that the role of woven fabrics positively contributes to the community welfare.
