Abstract

This study seeks to examine educators' communication tactics in instruction to enhance the development of students' critical thinking abilities. This study employs a qualitative methodology utilizing Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis paradigm to investigate three primary dimensions: texts, discursive practices, and social practices. Data were gathered from lesson plan documents, transcripts of classroom exchanges, and instructional materials at the secondary school level. The findings indicate that teachers predominantly employ directive and evaluative communication strategies, however there are encouraging signs of incorporating open-ended inquiries and rhetorical techniques that promote elaboration. Nonetheless, these techniques have not been uniformly implemented throughout the research population. Furthermore, the research of discursive practices uncovered conflicts between the requirements of an exam-centric educational framework and the necessity to cultivate students' critical thinking abilities. The study revealed that discourses regarding standardization and the integrative role of education impact learning at the level of social practice. This research significantly enhances the comprehension of communication strategy dynamics in education and provides recommendations for the reform of educational policy and teacher professional development. The findings are pertinent for equipping pupils to navigate the complexities of the modern world by fostering critical thinking abilities.

Abstract

Bilingual education programs are increasingly implemented in Indonesian international schools; however, their effectiveness in improving learning outcomes remains contested. Prior studies often emphasize program design while overlooking the complex roles of curriculum practices and stakeholder involvement. This study investigates how bilingual education programs influence learning effectiveness through mediating factors from the perspectives of key stakeholders. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed involving 523 participants (teachers, parents, and students) from Indonesian international schools implementing Immersion Program (IMM), Developmental Bilingual Education (DBE), and Two-Way Immersion (TWI) models. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine direct and mediated relationships among bilingual programs, curriculum and teaching, stakeholder engagement, and learning effectiveness. The findings reveal that bilingual education programs do not have a significant direct effect on learning effectiveness. However, they significantly influence curriculum and teaching practices as well as stakeholder engagement. Both curriculum–teaching adaptation and stakeholder experiences demonstrated significant positive effects on bilingual learning effectiveness, with stakeholder engagement emerging as the strongest mediator. These results indicate that the effectiveness of bilingual education is contingent upon mediating processes rather than program implementation alone. The findings support complexity theory, emphasizing the dynamic interaction between curriculum design, pedagogical practices, and stakeholder involvement. This study highlights the necessity of human-centered and context-sensitive approaches in designing and implementing bilingual education programs to enhance learning outcomes in Indonesian international schools.

Abstract

Civic education in elementary schools is essential for developing students’ civic understanding and character; however, instruction often remains text-based and insufficiently connected to learners’ cultural contexts. This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating Sipakatau local wisdom into interactive digital comics as a culturally responsive instructional medium.A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pretest–posttest model was employed. The sample comprised 19 sixth-grade students from an Indonesian elementary school. Data were collected from a civic learning outcomes test and a character values questionnaire. Analyses included descriptive statistics, assumption testing, paired-sample t-tests, and effect size calculation. The intervention produced a statistically significant improvement in civic learning outcomes, with mean scores increasing from 57.00 to 77.53 (p 0.05). The effect size was large (Cohen’s d = 1.65), indicating substantial practical impact. Gain analysis revealed that 84.2% of students achieved moderate to high improvement, demonstrating consistent learning enhancement across participants.Embedding Sipakatau values within interactive digital narratives appears to enhance student engagement and deepen conceptual understanding of civic content. The culturally grounded approach supports meaningful learning by connecting abstract civic principles with students’ lived experiences.Interactive digital comics incorporating local wisdom represent an effective and practical pedagogical strategy for strengthening elementary civic education and advancing culturally responsive digital learning practices.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the integration of Luwu’s local wisdom values, namely Sipakatau, Sipakainge, and Sipakalebbi (3S), into family counselling as a strategy for strengthening the positive character of junior high school students. The study employed an exploratory qualitative descriptive approach to investigate parents’ experiences and perspectives regarding the implementation of these values in family life. The research participants consisted of parents of junior high school students from a junior high school in Palopo City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that the values of Sipakatau, Sipakainge, and Sipakalebbi had been internalized and consistently applied within families through daily interactions. Parents emphasized the importance of mutual respect, guidance, and openness to feedback as key strategies in shaping children’s behavior. The integration of these values contributed to improving the quality of communication within the family and supported the development of positive character traits among students, such as politeness, empathy, responsibility, openness, and emotional control. Despite challenges, including parental workload and external environmental influences, these values remain relevant in the context of contemporary family life. These findings indicate that integrating Luwu’s local wisdom values into family counselling represents a culturally grounded approach that is effective in strengthening character education and optimizing the role of families in student development.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate management practices in early childhood education that promote attentive, meaningful, and joyful learning in the digital age. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The participants were the principal and teachers of a kindergarten in Palopo City, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling due to their direct involvement in planning, managing, and implementing learning processes. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which involves data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal that digital technology is used selectively as a pedagogical supplement rather than as the primary mode of instruction. Mindful learning is reflected in teachers’ preparedness, attentiveness, and responsiveness to classroom conditions. Meaningful learning is fostered through contextual and experience-based activities that connect learning content with children’s daily lives. Joyful learning is supported through play-based, multimodal, and emotionally supportive classroom practices. In addition, school management plays a strategic role through instructional planning, provision of digital facilities, teacher scheduling, professional development, and ongoing supervision. This study argues that effective early childhood education management in the digital era depends not on the intensity of technology use, but on the institution’s ability to integrate technology, pedagogy, and child-centered interaction in a coherent and developmentally appropriate manner.

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for qualitative data analysis; however, questions remain regarding their reliability compared to human coders. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this systematic review synthesizes empirical evidence on the use of generative artificial intelligence for coding interview and focus group data. Of the 1,085 records retrieved from six academic databases between 2020 and 2026, 30 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that LLMs, predominantly GPT-4, achieve moderate to substantial thematic agreement with human coders, with Cohen’s kappa values ranging from 0.40 to 0.91 (median 0.72) and accuracy rates between 77% and 96%. Reliability significantly improves with optimized prompting strategies and multi-run ensemble methods. Although LLMs demonstrate exceptional efficiency, reducing analysis time by 80% to 95%, they still face limitations in capturing cultural nuance, interpretive depth, and context-dependent coding. Therefore, current evidence supports the use of LLMs as an augmentation tool rather than a replacement for human researchers. Hybrid human-AI workflows, combining computational efficiency with human interpretive rigor, represent the most promising approach for robust qualitative analysis. For educational researchers, these findings highlight the potential of LLMs to advance qualitative learning analytics by enabling rapid processing of large-scale student data. Ultimately, this hybrid approach allows for deeper insights into technology-enhanced learning environments without sacrificing pedagogical nuance.

Abstract

The essence of religious moderation lies in transforming the perspectives and attitudes of religious groups toward diversity, rather than moderating the religion itself. This study aims to pinpoint and explore how the ecosystem of religious moderation shapes youth tolerance through religious literacy. The research was conducted in three regions of Indonesia: the western, central, and eastern areas. A total of 350 informants were selected proportionally. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study embraced an exploratory sequential design that integrates qualitative and quantitative methods. Quantitative data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling, while qualitative data were examined thematically. The findings indicate that the Religious Moderation Ecosystem (X1)—which consists of six components: society, education, religion, politics, the state, and the media—significantly influences youth tolerance (Y). Another key finding indicates that religious literacy functions as a mediating variable (Z) between the ecosystem and youth tolerance. The significance of religious literacy as a mediator constitutes the study’s novelty, demonstrating its ability to link the religious moderation ecosystem with tolerant attitudes among young people. These results carry both theoretical and practical implications, highlighting substantial direct and interceded relationships among the ecosystem, religious literacy, and tolerance. Furthermore, religious literacy is capable of mediating all elements of the religious moderation ecosystem in shaping tolerance, marking it as a novel contribution compared to prior research. This study is limited by the restricted number of respondents, which does not fully represent all regions. Therefore, future studies are recommended to explore the ecosystem of religious moderation with a more proportionate distribution of regions, respondents, and informants.
