Abstract

The conflict between shrimp productivity and mangrove conservation can be addressed through the “silvofishery” pond model, which integrates shrimp farming with mangrove intercropping especially relevant for traditional pond farmers who dominate aquaculture in Indonesia. However, silvofishery is not yet widely practiced. This research aims to assess the understanding and acceptance of pond farmers in Bireuen Regency toward mangroves and silvofishery, and to identify barriers to future implementation. The study was conducted in three sub-districts Kuala, Peusangan, and Jangka using in-depth interviews with ten respondents selected through a snowball method. Quantitative responses were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were interpreted using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Findings reveal that mangrove reforestation in Bireuen is still under threat from land conversion. Silvofishery remains challenging due to three core issues: (1) declining per capita landholding makes it difficult for farmers to allocate pond space for mangrove planting; (2) not all farmers accept silvofishery without first seeing proven models initiated by the government; and (3) concerns about increased pests, such as crabs and birds, which are attracted to mangrove habitats. These factors contribute to the currently low prospects for mangrove rehabilitation through silvofishery at the farmer level. A paradigm shift is needed, encouraging farmers to see mangroves not as a threat but as allies in solving persistent aquaculture problems, including disease and water pollution. Policy support, field schools, and demonstration ponds will be critical in building local trust and fostering long-term ecological and economic resilience. Abstract

Lake Lut Atas is administratively located in the KPH III protected forest area which is located on the slopes of Mount Burni Kul, Kampung Waq Pondok Sayur, Bukit District, Bener Meriah Regency, at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, with an area of approximately 8 hectares. Lake Lut Atas has long been used as a source of raw water for people's lives. However, the use of Lake Lut Atas as a source of clean water has not been carried out optimally because there is still a lack of research that examines the quantity and quality of lake water to determine the feasibility of Lake Lut Atas as a source of raw water for the community. At present there is agricultural activity by the community on the outskirts of Lake Lut Atas. The condition of the lake at the time of the study was that a kind of water hyacinth was thriving which covered almost the entire body of the lake and siltation due to sedimentation which was feared could reduce the quantity and quality of water. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical and chemical parameter values for the water quality of Lake Lut Atas and to determine the quality class (quality standard) of Tes Lake water according to Government Regulation No. 82 of 2001. The research results obtained physical parameters: lake depth 145.2 cm, temperature 23.2 °C, brightness 90 cm, and TDS 430.2 mg/L. For chemical parameters pH 8.05, DO 7.96 mg/L, COD 176.4 mg/L, BOD 12.294 mg/L, dissolved N-96.631 mg/L, and P 1.170 mg/L. As for the biological parameters, the total Coliform bacteria content was 48 Ind/ml.

Abstract

Climate change poses a growing threat to global coffee production, while agroforestry systems are increasingly recognized for their ecological and economic benefits, including their potential to enhance carbon sequestration. This study aimed to analyze the carbon stock of the Gayo coffee agroforestry system in Bener Meriah Regency. Field data were collected using a purposive sampling approach based on canopy density and accessibility, covering 16 plots measured between July and September 2024. Carbon estimation was conducted using the RaCSA method developed by ICRAF. The results show that Gayo coffee agroforestry represents a complex system with diverse plant species contributing to carbon storage. The highest carbon stock is recorded for Petai (Parkia speciosa) at 28.98 ton C/ha, while the lowest occurs in red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) at 0.034 ton C/ha. The total measured carbon stock reaches 2,115.072 ton C, with an average of 124.416 ton C/ha. These findings demonstrate that the Gayo coffee agroforestry system provides a substantial contribution to climate change mitigation through aboveground carbon storage. The study concludes that enhancing agroforestry-based coffee farming has ecological and economic benefits and strengthens opportunities for implementing low-carbon agricultural certification and social forestry programs. Future research may further explore belowground carbon and long-term carbon dynamics across different management intensities.
