Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify and explain what encourages students to study Cultural Arts (Music) in class VIII of SMP Negeri 15 Padang. This research used a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The researcher became the main instrument in data collection, with the help of stationery and camera. Data were collected through observation, direct interaction, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out by reducing information, presenting findings, and concluding research results. The findings show the low motivation of students in learning Cultural Arts (music) at the grade VIII level, which is caused by the ineffectiveness of the expository teaching method used by the teacher. This is reinforced by findings from interviews which show that students are more inclined towards extrinsic motivation compared to intrinsic motivation. The lack of access to learning media devices such as projectors, laptops and speakers in the school environment is also one of the factors contributing to students' lack of interest in learning Cultural Arts (music) at SMP Negeri 15 Padang.

Abstract

This study explores Generation Z's understanding and perception of sound design in popular music, focusing on how this concept influences their music-listening experiences and emotional responses. Sound design, encompassing audio production quality, sound effects, and waveform processing, is critical in shaping diverse auditory experiences. However, the depth of understanding of sound design among Generation Z varies widely, presenting an opportunity to bridge knowledge gaps in music education. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, a survey was conducted among students with music education backgrounds to assess their familiarity with sound design concepts. The findings reveal diverse levels of comprehension, with some respondents recognizing the term "sound design" but lacking a clear understanding, while others demonstrated a deeper knowledge of its components and significance. Participants identified key elements of sound design, such as the importance of production quality, creative use of sound effects, and manipulating audio waveforms, as pivotal in enhancing the listening experience. A novel aspect of this study is examining how sound design impacts emotional engagement with music. Most respondents reported that sound design enhances the emotional depth of songs and makes the music more immersive and enjoyable. Interestingly, while many felt that sound design influenced their music preferences, a subset of respondents remained unaffected. This research highlights a strong interest among Generation Z in learning more about sound design, suggesting the need for educational initiatives that integrate sound design into music curricula.

Abstract

This study introduces an innovative approach to orchestral education by blending classical music principles with popular music elements and electronic looping technology. In a landscape where classical music often struggles to captivate students drawn to contemporary genres, this approach aims to maintain classical music's discipline while delivering a dynamic and engaging learning experience. The research evaluates student responses to the use of looping technology, examining its impact on learning outcomes and identifying associated benefits and challenges. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 37 students from an orchestral course at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations over one semester. The results reveal that electronic looping technology significantly enhances student interest and engagement, offering a fresh perspective on orchestral practice. The technology not only bridges classical and modern musical expressions but also facilitates individualized learning, enabling students to explore creativity within structured compositions. Most participants demonstrated a higher interest in repertoires incorporating looping technology than in traditional classical pieces. Furthermore, the integration of partiture-based learning with digital tools improved students' technical skills, rhythmic accuracy, and ensemble cohesion. However, challenges related to synchronization and technical setup highlight the need for targeted instructional strategies and technological support. The novelty of this study lies in its exploration of how digital tools like looping technology can revitalize classical music education, making it more relevant to today's students. These findings offer practical insights for music educators seeking to innovate teaching methods and adapt to the evolving digital landscape in education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current intonation in Music Education students at UNP, assess the impact of longtone exercises in improving intonation, and assess intonation differences before and after training. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research research. This research instrument is the researcher himself and is assisted by supporting instruments such as stationery and cameras. The data in this study used primary data and secondary data. Data collection techniques are carried out by means of interviews, observations, and document analysis. The steps of analyzing data are data reduction, data model and drawing conclusions. The results showed that longtone training became the most important exercise in the process of forming pitch control (intonation) in playing the Saxophone. Longtone exercises build the strength of the lip muscles (muscle memory) because to get a good intonation, the lip muscles must be formed and have stable strength in order to get a good tone, because the Saxophone is a tool that is very sensitive to pitch changes. Researchers provide an understanding of the urgency and mastery of basic exercises in playing beginner Saxophone. Because before mastering higher techniques, of course, you must master basic techniques first, especially longtones, so that higher technique training does not experience problems because it already has a strong foundation. This research also provides an understanding that it is important for an instrument player to perform the stages in the process of musical instrument practice well and the importance of practicing basic techniques in learning the instrument.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and evaluate the Minangkabau traditional music learning model/strategy applied in grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Sungai Tarab. The research to be used is qualitative research using analytical descriptive methods. This research instrument is the researcher himself and is assisted by supporting instruments such as stationery and cameras. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The steps to analyze data are to collect data, describe the data and collect the data. The results showed that learning Minangkabau traditional music in Class X of SMA Negeri 1 Sungai Tarab was carried out with theory and practice. The implementation of theory in learning traditional music culture art was carried out for 2 weeks, starting from the first meeting, then for practical learning the teacher exemplified directly with several songs playing traditional Minangkabau musical instruments. Students are less interested in learning Minangkabau traditional music culture. Because teachers have not found the right learning model in learning, and also in practical learning face obstacles in the available musical instruments. Because it is not guarded / maintained to make some traditional Minangkabau musical instruments can no longer be used. Student interest in learning Minangkabau traditional music seems to be decreasing, because the learning model or strategy for teachers is not right, teachers have not implemented important stage assessments that must exist in learning that applies the curriculum and also the factors of inadequate tools used that make the learning process of Minangkabau traditional music art culture not run optimally.
