Abstract

A novel is one of the types of literature that retells real-world events in a fictional way without taking away their social or cultural parts. This research was conducted to analyze Native Son, a novel about Bigger Thomas's life as a black person in America in the 1930s. The issues explored in this novel include racial prejudice, racial discrimination, and racial segregation. This study used an interdisciplinary approach, a mimetic approach, and a document study. The data are collected by reading the novel, taking the contents representing the issues, and then presenting and explaining what the data mean. The study results show that Native Son portrays some of the sociocultural issues that often occur in society. This study is expected to provide readers with information on how to analyze a literary work, specifically a novel, and to gain a greater understanding of sociocultural issues in society so that it can be used as a reflection of life.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk memberikan wawasan kepada 45 Guru MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMA se-kota Banjarmasin mengenai desain pembelajaran berbasis kurikulum merdeka pada lingkup topik lahan basah. Metode pelaksanaan pelatihan ini terdiri dari tiga tahap yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Narasumber menjelaskan Language Features in Writing, Genre-based Approach, dan pendekatan desain pembelajaran yang dapat diaplikasikan post-pandemi dengan integrasi teknologi pada fokus topik lingkungan lahan basah dilanjutkan pembimbingan langsung praktik penggunaan aplikasi pendukung. Hasil angket pada tahap evaluasi pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa 91% peserta pelatihan menyatakan bahwa mereka mendapatkan pemahaman baru/ tambahan mengenai Genre-based approach. Selain itu, peserta juga memiliki pengetahuan yang baik tentang Genre-based approach yaitu 73% dari peserta dapat menjelaskan tahap building knowledge of the field dengan tepat dan 86% dari peserta dapat menjelaskan tahap modelling of the text dengan tepat. Sedangkan, penjelasan tahap joint construction of the text dijelaskan dengan baik oleh 91% dan tahap independent writing dijelaskan dengan tepat oleh seluruh peserta. Selain itu, peserta menyatakan bahwa genre-based approach dapat dipertimbangkan untuk digunakan agar dapat memfasilitasi siswa dalam menulis secara lebih mudah (91%) karena memberi siswa kesempatan untuk bekerja dalam tim secara bertahap dan lebih terarah. Secara keseluruhan, pelaksanaan pelatihan dinilai sangat bermanfaat oleh peserta (73%) dan 27% peserta menyatakan bermanfaat. Kesimpulan yang didapat yaitu setelah menghadapi dampak pandemi COVID-19, penting bagi guru untuk melakukan adaptasi dan bagi akademisi perguruan tinggi untuk terus memperkenalkan dan menarik benang merah Kurikulum Merdeka di dunia Pendidikan serta mendiseminasikannya pada guru-guru di sekolah agar terjalin pemahaman selaras dalam dimulai dari bentuk desain pembelajaran. Workshop on Learning Design in the Post-Pandemic Covid-19 Era with Wetland Environment Integration  The aim of this service is to provide insight to 45 high school English MGMP teachers throughout the city of Banjarmasin regarding independent curriculum-based learning designs on the topic of wetlands. The method for implementing this training consists of three stages, namely preparation, implementation and evaluation. The resource person explained Language Features in Writing, Genre-based Approach, and learning design approaches that can be applied post-pandemic with technology integration focusing on wetland environmental topics followed by direct practical guidance in using supporting applications. The results of the questionnaire at the training evaluation stage showed that 91% of training participants stated that they gained new/additional understanding regarding the Genre-based approach. Apart from that, the participants also had good knowledge about the Genre-based approach, namely 73% of the participants could explain the building knowledge of the field stage correctly and 86% of the participants could explain the modeling of the text stage correctly. Meanwhile, the explanation of the joint construction of the text stage was explained well by 91% and the independent writing stage was explained correctly by all participants. Apart from that, participants stated that a genre-based approach could be considered to be used to facilitate students in writing more easily (91%) because it gives students the opportunity to work in teams gradually and in a more focused manner. Overall, the implementation of the training was considered very useful by participants (73%) and 27% of participants said it was useful. The conclusion obtained is that after facing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important for teachers to adapt and for higher education academics to continue to introduce and draw out the common thread of the Independent Curriculum in the world of education and disseminate it to teachers in schools so that there is a harmonious understanding starting from form of learning design.

Abstract

. Ritual merupakan suatu sistem atau rangkaian tindakan yang ditata oleh adat dan hukum yang berlaku dalam masyarakat yang berhubungan dengan berbagai macam peristiwa yang biasanya terjadi dalam masyarakat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) menjelaskan proses ritual tuyang awal-awal masyarakat Ulu Benteng kecamatan Marabahan kabupaten Barito Kuala (2) menjelaskan faktor-faktor atau gejala-gejala anak yang harus melaksanakan ritual tuyang awalawal di Ulu Benteng kecamatan Marabahan kabupaten Barito Kuala (3) mendeskripsikan alasan masyarakat Ulu Benteng kecamatan Marabahan kabupaten Barito Kuala mempercayai tuyang awal-awal sebagai penawar atau pengobatan bagi anak-anak yang sakit atau kapingitan atau kapinggiran. Metode yang digunakan di dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif. Sumber data diperoleh purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik observasi dan wawancara. Analisis penelitian yang dipakai adalah reduksi data, penyajian data, dan verification. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) proses kegiatan ritual tuyang awal-awal masyarakat Ulu Benteng Kecamatan Marabahan Kabupaten Barito Kuala terdiri dari persiapan yaitu pembuatan piduduk tuyang, tuyang dan rarampah tuyang. Pelaksanaan berupa tampung tawar,mandai tuyang, batuyang dan mantra dan muhun tuyang. Penutup yaitu berupa pemberian salamat. (2) Faktor-faktor atau gejala-gejala anak yang harus melaksanakan ritual tuyang awal-awal masyarakat Ulu Benteng Kecamatan Marabahan Kabupaten Barito Kuala adalah kepercayaan dan alternatife pengobatan. (3) Alasan masyarakat Ulu Benteng Kecamatan Marabahan Kabupaten Barito Kuala mempercayai tuyang awal-awal sebagai penawar atau pengobatan bagi anak yang sakit atau kapingitan terdiri dari kepercayaan irasional dan kepercayaan rasional. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian kepada para pembaca agar penelitian tentang ritual tuyanbg awal-awal dapat dikembangkan lagi, yaitu pada kajian sejarah maupun mantra-mantra yang terdapat pada ritual.

Abstract

YouTube offers plenty of authentic material created by people worldwide which is frequently used as learning media. Numerous studies on YouTube have been carried out, some of which examined the effect of YouTube on listening ability, and the use of YouTube as learning media. However, only a few studies talk about the use of YouTube on students’ listening comprehension particularly to monitor self-improvement for getting English listening proficiency. Therefore, anchored in Anderson’s (1995) theory and filling the void of previous studies, this research was conducted to describe the use of watching YouTube videos for acquiring students’ listening comprehension. This research applied a qualitative research approach using a structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview as the instruments to collect the data. The subjects of this research were 4 students of the English Language Education Study Program of Lambung Mangkurat University. Findings showed that the use of YouTube videos by the respondents means they use extensive listening to improve their listening comprehension. The participants portrayed using YouTube as a way of self-improvement. The improvement they felt after watching YouTube videos was that they are able to easily find the main idea and general information while listening. It can be concluded that watching YouTube videos frequently is useful enough to improve students' listening comprehension.

Abstract

Several factors are thought to influence second language acquisition (SLA). The concepts of motivation and self-efficacy are frequently linked to SLA success. In terms of linguistic outcomes, motivation is a significant contributor, whereas self-efficacy is a component of social, metacognitive, and cognitive strategies. Students with varying levels of motivation and self-efficacy attribute diverse reasons for their success and failure in learning a second language, so these elements are crucial in determining one's level of success in learning a second language. The purpose of this study is to analyze self-efficacy and motivation as contributing factors to second language acquisition. This paper gathered and reviewed journal articles on motivation and self-efficacy in second language acquisition from a variety of journals in the field using thematic analysis. The method for this study uses a literature review in order to demonstrate the contribution of the factors self-efficacy and motivations to second language acquisition. It is expected that self-efficacy and motivation improve students' learning performance in a variety of language skills. The implications of this study benefit language teachers by helping learners create positive beliefs about themselves and improve their confidence about their abilities to learn a second language.

Abstract

There are many language skills that must be mastered in learning English, consequently the proper media is required to accommodate this need. Webtoon is the solution for these problems, which is a very popular digital comic application with more than 100 million downloads and provides a wide variety of genres which can help to learn English skills. The previous research examined the use of webtoon as a learning media to mastering vocabulary, improve students reading skills, speaking skills and writing skills. However, no research has been conducted on the use of webtoon for all English language skills. Therefore, this study aims to investigate of using webtoon applications for students’ English skills. This study employed qualitative approach, and the design used in this study was systematic literature review. The method of collecting data in this research is by using 25 research articles that were collected from Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Microsoft Academic, ScienceDirect, and the Perpustakaan Nasional. From twenty five articles that researchers have been investigated it was found that webtoon media has a big impact on students’ English skills. The illustration images available on the webtoon also help in understanding the story and difficult words for the readers and also do not make the students bored. Therefore, this article is structured to investigate how the use of webtoon for students could increase their English skills.

Abstract

Speaking is a productive skill that cannot be learned quickly but through a process requiring time, energy, and effort. To accelerate the development of speaking skills, English learners, such as those in senior high school, frequently participate in learning communities, such as Community of Practice. Several studies related to community of practices have been conducted, which reported teacher learning community and learning with peers. However, there is a scarce discussion on the concept of a Community of Practice for learning English-speaking skills. Therefore, this research investigated whether the English Club supports students’ speaking skills. The research methodology used in this study is Narrative Inquiry. The subjects of the research were the students and the coach. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin. The Researcher employed instruments such as observation checklists and interview guidelines. The findings of the study showed that the English Club at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin supports students in developing their speaking skills. The English Club is a community of students who actively practice using English for communication. The club supports informal learning, focusing on developing public speaking skills through storytelling, speech, and debate. The club's activities are designed to enhance students' fluency and pronunciation.
