Abstract

This study aims to explore and understand the experiences of drug rehabilitation clients in confronting social stigma in the city of Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, the research involved 10 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. Results identified five major themes: (1) external stigma manifested as labeling, discrimination, and social rejection; (2) self-stigma as the internalization of negative societal views; (3) active coping strategies including self-proving, spirituality, and cognitive reframing; (4) the dual impact of stigma on the recovery process; and (5) the protective role of social support. These findings affirm that the success of drug rehabilitation is not solely determined by clinical intervention, but also by the conditions of social acceptance and environmental support surrounding the individual.

Abstract

Excessive gadget use among adolescents is a serious concern. This study aims to explain adolescents' subjective experiences regarding how gadget use affects their mental health. The study used a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological approach, and data were collected through a Google form containing open-ended questions from adolescents aged 14 to 18 who use devices for at least 4 to 6 hours daily. The Colaizzi method was used to analyze the data. The results showed that excessive gadget use impacts social anxiety, sleep disturbances, social isolation, digital behavioral dependency, and decreased desire to learn. In adolescents, social media exposure leads to social comparison, which leads to feelings of inferiority and depression.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the use of social media impacts adolescent mental health in the digital era. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through open-ended online questionnaires distributed to school-aged adolescents aged 13 to 18 years who are active users of social media. The Colaizzi method was utilized to identify emerging themes from the participants' experiences. Data collection techniques included observation and in-depth interviews, and the data were analyzed using the following steps: data reduction, data display (presentation), and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings revealed three main conclusions. First, when adolescents' posts did not receive the expected social responses, many experienced disappointment, sadness, and diminished self-esteem, indicating that social validation significantly influences their emotional well-being. Second, excessive use of social media was found to have adverse effects on both mental and physical health, manifesting as anxiety, overthinking, and a tendency toward unfavorable social comparison. Third, social media was shown to exacerbate negative emotions and undermine adolescents' self-confidence. This study suggests that social media exerts a complex influence on adolescent mental health. Consequently, enhanced digital literacy, active involvement from parents and educators, and adequate psychological support are essential to enable adolescents to engage with social media in a safe, healthy, and responsible manner.
