Abstract

The 2022 PKM activities carried out by the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Khairun University, were completed in Takofi Village, Pulau Moti District. Takofi Village is one of the villages located in Pulau Moti District, with the average population working as farmers and fishermen. One of the biggest fertilizer producers from this village is cloves and nutmeg. The clove and nutmeg home processing industry in this village can be said to be very minimal. The clove and nutmeg marketing process carried out by the people of Takofi Village is usually carried out individually by the farmers and then sold to Village collectors; there are also itinerant traders who come from door to door to buy dried cloves from clove farmers who want to sell their cloves to them and some are sold directly to Ternate. The dedication results show that partners easily understand and practice the training material. This is evident from their ability to make several processed clove and nutmeg products, such as making clove oil and processed nutmeg products into candied nutmeg as taught. Through this activity, partners can be motivated to become entrepreneurs by utilizing existing local potential. Thus, the existing natural resources can not only be used optimally but also can generate added value for the family economy. Keywords:  Cloves, Nutmeg, Community Empowerment, Takofi Village.

Abstract

Epoxy composites are widely used in structural and tribological applications because they combine good adhesion, corrosion resistance, and mechanical stability with relatively simple processing. Their main limitation is inadequate wear resistance under sustained sliding or abrasive contact. A growing body of literature therefore explores the incorporation of mineral fillers and carbon-based additives to improve both tribological and mechanical performance. This review critically examines epoxy composites reinforced with mineral iron sand and carbon fillers, with emphasis on processing routes, microstructural evolution, interfacial behavior, wear response, hardness, and flexural properties. The review also places this material system within the broader context of polymer composites used in automotive, aerospace, gears, electronics, and tribological components. Across the literature, iron-rich fillers mainly improve stiffness, hardness, and load-bearing ability, whereas carbon fillers reduce friction and facilitate the formation of lubricating transfer layers. However, the benefits are non-linear. Intermediate carbon loading often yields the best compromise between wear resistance and flexural strength, while excessive loading tends to increase agglomeration, porosity, and stress concentration. The review further re-examines common interpretations of XRD, FTIR, and SEM results and highlights important methodological limitations. Finally, it identifies research gaps related to long-term durability, fatigue, thermal cycling, surface treatment of carbon particles, and data-driven optimization of filler content for engineering applications.

Abstract

Metroxylon sago is a palm that grows widely in tropical wetlands and has high economic and ecological value. The sago stem pulp waste contains cellulose fibers that have potential as reinforcement in composite materials. However, the hydrophilic nature and surface impurities of natural fibers limit their mechanical performance. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of liquid smoke treatment on the morphology and tensile strength of single fibers from sago stem pulp. This study used an experimental method. The fibers were soaked in coconut shell liquid smoke for 1, 2, and 3 hours, followed by drying in an oven at 40°C for 30 minutes. Morphological observations were performed using a JEOL JCM 6000 Scanning Electron Microscope, and single fiber tensile tests were conducted according to ASTM D3379-02 standard. The results were compared with untreated fibers as control. The results showed that liquid smoke treatment altered the fiber morphology in all treatment variations. The most optimal surface morphology was obtained at 1 hour of treatment, characterized by a cleaner and rougher surface due to the removal of hemicellulose and impurities. In terms of mechanical properties, liquid smoke treatment increased the tensile strength of single fibers. The highest tensile strength was achieved at 1 hour of treatment with a value of 49.232 MPa, while the lowest was at 2 hours of treatment with 16.694 MPa. Prolonged soaking beyond 1 hour caused fiber degradation and a decrease in tensile strength. It can be concluded that 1 hour of liquid smoke treatment is the optimum duration to improve the morphology and tensile strength of single sago stem pulp fibers. This treatment can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to enhance the quality of natural fibers for composite reinforcement applications.

Abstract

This study investigates the mechanical properties of Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printed resin in bending moment analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM). With the growing adoption of SLA in healthcare and manufacturing, understanding mechanical performance of SLA-printed components, particularly in bending, is crucial. The research evaluates influence of printing parameters and material composition on flexural strength and flexibility of dental resin samples. It examines internal geometries such as triangle and honeycomb structures and varying thickness-to-height ratios affecting bending strength. Bending tests followed ASTM D790 standards and results were compared with FEM simulations to validate material behavior. Simulations were performed using Abaqus Student 2025 software under conditions matching experimental tests. Results show geometry and thickness-to-height ratio significantly affect bending strength, with triangle geometry outperforming honeycomb. Samples with triangle geometry and 4.5 mm ratio achieved highest bending strength of 62.743 MPa, while honeycomb 9 mm reached 55.943 MPa. Post-processing such as UV curing improves mechanical properties of resin. This study provides insights for SLA 3D printing applications in dental prosthetics and offers a framework to optimize printing parameters for performance. It contributes to the development of predictive modeling combining FEM and experimental validation for improved design of additively manufactured resin components in biomedical applications. Future work will explore broader geometries, different resin formulations, and more complex loading conditions to enhance accuracy and reliability of simulation-based design methods for SLA printed structures in engineering and medical fields as well as improve clinical applicability in dental prosthetic fabrication processes and patient outcomes overall performance.
