Abstract

One important complication in the diabetic patient is diabetic ulcer. Diabetic ulcers in diabetes patient can increase the risk of amputation and expensive treatment costs, so the alternative treatmeant such as Merremia mammosa which has antiinflamatory and antidiabetic is needed. This study aimed to determine the comparison of the number of macrophage in the incisional wound in hyperglycemic male wistar rats between treatment with Merremia mammosa extract and NaCl. The in vivo test was done by creating wound incision on the mice backs and treated with gentamycin ointment 5% in a positive control group, NaCl in a negative control group and Merremia mammosa extract in a dose of 100m), 200mg, 400mg in treatment group. The result obtained by counting the number of macrophage in histopatholgy examination. The result showed the number of macrophage were 0,36 cells/field of view in a negative control group, 0,52 cells/field of view in a positive control group, 0,48 cells/field of view in all Merremia mammosa treatment groups. The data analysis showed no significant difference with p-value of 0,729. In conclusion, there was no significant difference between the used of Merremia mammosa extract and NaCl on full thickness incisional wounds of hyperglycemic male wistar rats.   Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Merremia mammosa extract, incisional wound

Abstract

Hand surface area is considered as 1% of body surface area is used as one way in determining the extent of burns. There are differences of percentage of hand surface area in literatures. This study aimed to determine the ratio of hand surface area and palm surface area towards body surface area in young adults at the University of Jember based on Body Mass Index (BMI) and sex. This study was observational analytic with cross sectional approach. The samples were 120 young adults at the University of Jember, divided into 4 groups of BMI i.e. thin, normal, overweight, and obese. The analysis used in this study was One Way Anova and Independent T-test. The average percentage of the hand surface area on male 0.757%, female 0.702%, thin group 0.794%, normal 0.747%, overweight 0.704%, and obese 0.677%. Test analysis between men and women obtained significance value <0.05 while between groups of BMI obtained significance value <0.05 except between overweight and obese. It concluded that the percentage of hand surface area was different between genders and BMI groups. The percentage of the hand surface area was smaller with an increase of BMI. Keywords: hand surface area, body surface area, body mass index, sex

Abstract

Wound healing need protein as basis for the formation of collagen network. The important component of protein is albumin. The aim of this study was to investigate albumin serum’s effect on wound healing in patients postoperative laparotomy and lumbotomy at dr. Soebandi Hospital Jember. The method of study was analytic observational with cross sectional design. Total samples in this study were 9 samples. The results showed that the higher albumis, the faster wound healing. Data analysis using bivariate analyzing Spearman's Rho test showed that the significance (p)=0.011 and correlation coefficients (r)=0.791. Thus, it can be concluded that there were a strong albumin serum’s effect of wound healing in patients postoperative laparotomy and lumbotomy at RSD dr. Soebandi Jember.

Abstract

Burns is a serious global health problem. Annually, 265.000 dead occured because of burns. Local burns wound treatment ideally uses material that can act as antimicrobial and antiinflamation, as well conditions moist environtment. Cucumber contains flavonoid and saponin that enhance Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor that can increase angiogenesis. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of cucumber extract gel and cucumber powder gel on number of vascular lumen angiogenesis of IIB-burn wound healing in wistar rat. This research was true experimental laboratories with post test control only design by using wistar rats and divided into 8 groups. Rats were burns-induced and then terminated on the 3rd and the 10th day, each group consist of negative control group (normal saline), positive control group (gentamycin eye ointment), treatment group 1 (cucumber extract gel), treatment group 2 (cucumber powder gel). Data analysis using One Way ANOVA test for the 3rd day and the 10th day on vascular lumen number showed 0,031 and 0,036 (p<0,05) significance respectively. In conclusion, there was significant difference for cucumber extract gel and cucumber powder gel towards vascular lumen number in IIB-burns wound healing in wistar rat. Keywords: Burns, wound healing, angiogenesis, cucumber (Cucumis sativus)

Abstract

The healing process of burns can be disturbed by bacteria and free radicals. Polyphenol (flavonoid and procyanidin) in cocoa have an antibacterial activity, antiinflammatory and antioxidants. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the cocoa beans ethanolic extract on the second degree burns healing process by measuring the number of fibroblasts. The in vivo test was done by creating a second degree burns on the mice backs then treated with either: the ethanolic extract of cocoa beans gel 8 %, Silver Sulfadiazine or Normal saline. The number of fibroblasts was counted in histopatholgy preparations. The result showed the number of fibroblasts 26.67 cells/field of view in Normal saline group; 44.23 cells/field of view in Silver Sulfadiazine group; 50.02 cells/field of view in the ethanolic extract of cocoa beans gel 8 % group. The data analysis showed significant differences between treatment groups. The conclusion was the ethanolic extract of cocoa beans affect the healing process on second degree burns and the number of fibroblasts in the ethanolic extract of cocoa beans gel 8% group was higher than Normal saline and Silver Sulfadiazine groups. Keywords: ethanolic extract of cocoa beans, polyphenols, flavonoids, procyanidin, second degree burns, Silver Sulfadiazine
