Abstract

Teaching English for primary school students highly emphasizes on vocabulary. It is understandable since they are at the first stage of learning the language. Unfortunately, in many teaching practices, vocabulary is taught in an isolated way without the presence of meaningful context. Vocabularies are often given in the form of long list to be memorized. Actually, the aim of learning vocabulary is to equip the students to be ready to use the language (i.e. speaking). Therefore, here, Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS) is to meet with the students’ need. TPR Storytelling is one of foreign language teaching methods proposed by Blaine Ray of Bakersfield, California. Using TPR Storytelling (TPRS), teachers told two stories, Crocodile Tears and The Very Hungry Caterpillar and students acted those stories out. The research was conducted to know the influence of TPR Storytelling on the student’s vocabulary mastery. It elaborates what works and what does not work in implementing Total Physical Response Storytelling to teach vocabulary. To achieve the purpose of this research, a Classroom Action Research consisting of two cycles was conducted. The subjects of the research were Second Graders of SD in Kudus, Centra Java, Indonesia, with the number of 20 students. Three instruments were used to collect the data, i.e.: test, observation, & questionnaire. The result of the research shows that the use of TPRS can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The students’ responses on the use of TPRS are also positive. Therefore, teachers are expected to make use of other stories by considering vocabularies that meet with the syllabus and the students’ need with the support from the institution.

Abstract

Teaching reading for young learners in this 21st-century learning demands teachers to be creative and consider the educational effect on students through technology-enhanced language learning. Therefore, the characteristics of students categorized as young learners should be considered, so the process of designing teaching scenarios, including the material and media, can be administered right on the target. At this point, teaching reading as one of the parts of literacies in the EFL context challenged teachers to simultaneously build students' reading motivation and ability in this digital era. This mixed-method study involved 31 young learners in one primary school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study had two research questions: 1) How is the student's reading activity during the implementation of Storyberries? And 2) How is the student's reading achievement after being taught using Storyberries? Storyberries, a treatment used in this study, was a free online audiobook that provides many short stories that can be adjusted to readers' age, the duration of reading need, and reading interest. The design used in this study was an Exploratory Sequential Design, where the qualitative method preceded the quantitative one. The instruments used in this study were classroom observation sheets and tests. The three concurrent flows as a triangulation technique were used to analyze the qualitative data, while normality and descriptive statistics using SPSS version 25 were administered to analyze the quantitative data. The study's findings revealed that teachers used good pedagogical aspects to integrate Storyberries into the reading classroom and successfully enhanced students' reading motivation and proficiency. This pedagogical impact is expected to be implemented to the broader scope of teaching reading for young learners' needs. Keywords: Teaching reading; storyberries; young learners

Abstract

Kuesioner dibuat berdasarkan teori Robbins and Judge (2013). This research is aimed to portray the students’ perception of the implementation of PjBL in a Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL)  class. To answer the questions, the data are obtained through a questionnaire and observation. The findings of the research are expected to contribute to the body of knowledge of research on TEYL and specifically to give more insights to researchers in TEYL. Using qualitative research design, the study was implemented in a TEYL class with 32 students as the participants of English Education Department of Universitas Muria Kudus in the academic year 2019/2020. A questionnaire was used to collect the data and was analyzed thematically using percentage. The research reveals that the students perceived the project neutrally for three aspects of perceiver, target and situation. The observation shows that the students have limited access to their group members out of classroom discussion. In addition, the lecturer only gave minimum assistance before and after the completion of the project. During the project completion, either the lecturer and students or the students and the students seemed not connected. Further factors that might contribute to the success of PjBL should be taken into account, such as the teacher’s role as facilitator, the use of various technological learning media and effective communication between students and teacher and among students themselves.
