Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between demographic factors and self-injury behavior (Non-Suicidal Self-Injury/ NSSI) in Indonesian adolescents from an educational psychology perspective. Using a cross-sectional study method with a quantitative approach, this study involved 213 adolescents aged 12-18 years (Mage = 14.95; SD = 1.52). Participants were recruited via a purposive sampling method. The Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI) was employed to assess self-injurious behaviors. Inferential analysis utilized the Chi-square test to examine associations between categorical demographic variables, while one-way ANOVA was conducted to identify significant differences in mean NSSI scores across independent groups. The result showed that the proportion of participants who reported doing NSSI did not differ by socioeconomic status and education level. However, a significant association was found between NSSI and gender. Furthermore, it was also found a significant difference in the degree of NSSI between male and female adolescents. Females were more potential than males to do NSSI. These findings emphasize the imperative for educational psychology policies to incorporate routine screenings, targeted intervention or educational programs to alleviate NSSI among female adolescents. It should also implement professional training and culturally sensitive mental health services to create stigma-free environments that promote early intervention and resilience-building.

Abstract

Abstract

Adolescence is characterized by significant biological, psychological, and social changes, that bring challenges that may lead to maladaptive behaviors, such as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Executive function and resilience are the factors that can affect NSSI behavior by promoting adaptive responses to challenges. Executive function supports emotional regulation and problem-solving, while resilience helps adolescents cope with stress. This study aims to explore how resilience mediates the relationship between executive function and NSSI. The Teenage Executive Function Inventory, Cognitive Flexibility Scale, Child and Youth Resilience Measure-Revised, and Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory were used in this study. Two hundred and eleven adolescents participated, consisting of 104 males and 107 females (SD = 0.501), aged 12-18 years (SD = 1.424). Data analysis was conducted using Hayes Macro Process Mediation Analysis. Results indicate resilience partially mediates the relationship between overall executive function and NSSI. However, resilience fully mediates the relationship between executive function dimensions separately—working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility—and NSSI. These findings underscore the importance of resilience and executive function in understanding NSSI behavior among adolescents. Moreover, resilience and executive function can be considered by practitioners and parents as key targets for interventions aimed at preventing and reducing the prevalence of NSSI.

Abstract

"We Need to Talk About Kevin" is a movie that tells the story of Kevin's life starting from infancy to adolescence, which shows various psychopathological symptoms. Since childhood, Kevin has had various behavioral disorders and has difficulty building a good relationship with his mother, Eva. These behavioral issues worsened until finally, Kevin committed murder against his father, younger sister, and his peers. There are various interactions that can be explained using a perspective from developmental psychopathology to explore every factor in Kevin's life. This research is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach to understand and interpret every aspect of Kevin's life from his childhood and analyze them using theories of developmental psychopathology. The result of this research shows that there are a few factors of developmental psychopathology depicted in the film such as genetics, environmental factors, attachment style, symptoms of maternal depression and stress during pregnancy, as well as parenting styles that play a role in each stage of Kevin's development. In the end, there are also solutions presented to minimize psychopathology in children, namely improving the quality of relationships, family communication, and good co-parenting between father and mother. Through this research, it is hoped that there will be a deeper understanding of the factors in the developmental psychopathology depicted in the film "We Need to Talk About Kevin". Keywords: movie analysis; phenomenological approach; developmental psychopathology

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of student suicide in Indonesia in 2023 from the perspective of developmental psychopathology and suggest its implications for school counseling. This qualitative research employed a phenomenology approach. The data sources were secondary, obtained from suicide news articles on national and regional online news sites, and analyzed using reflexive thematic technique. The research results indicated 15 cases with 5 themes depicting the phenomenon of student suicide, including 1) accessible places and methods, 2) leaving messages or signs, 3) the severity of family conditions, 4) internalizing many things, and 5) dangerous peer influences. The concept of equifinality could be illustrated from the analyzed phenomena. The internalizing problems experienced by the victims may stem from the relationship patterns between parents and students and/or students and peers, which appear to dominantly underlie these cases. The research findings recommend implications for strengthening holistic counseling programs involving various members in the school environment.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the contribution of media multitasking in predicting the performance of executive function which covers inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and working memory among secondary-school students. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design. Research participants were secondary-school students aged 13 – 18 years who attended school in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi areas (N = 192). Data were collected using convenience sampling. Media multitasking was measured through a media use questionnaire. EF components were calculated using a performance-based approach by employing the Go/No-Go Task for inhibitory control, the Dots-Triangle Task for cognitive flexibility, and the N-2-Back Task for working memory. All data were analyzed statistically by descriptive, assumption testing, and hierarchical regression analysis. The result shows that media multitasking only contributes significantly to predicting performance inhibitory control after controlling gender and age. However, media multitasking is not significantly associated with the performance of cognitive flexibility and working memory. This study found that the use of digital media is related to the ability of students to inhibit irrelevant stimuli in learning.

Abstract

This study examines the landscape of executive function (EF) assessments for Indonesian adolescents, focusing on their psychometric properties. The adolescent development phase, marked by cognitive growth, presents opportunities and risks, especially in education settings where well-developed EF is beneficial. This research used a qualitative approach, with a systematic literature review method using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis), analyzing peer-reviewed empirical studies from databases such as SCOPUS and others, focusing on EF measurements for adolescents in Indonesia from 2014 to 2024. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria, highlighting tools like the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF)-Indonesian version, Executive Skills Questionnaire-Revised (ESQ-R), Executive Function Questionnaire (EFQ), and performance-based measures like the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Stroop Test. Using content analysis, this study reveals that while the BRIEF is widely used in clinical studies, its applicability in educational settings requires improvement. The findings highlight the importance of adapting EF tools with cultural sensitivity and developing new comprehensive assessments with clear psychometric properties regarding all critical EF components. In recommendations, the study pinpoints a multi-method approach combining inventory-based and performance-based measures to provide a thorough understanding of EF while maintaining practicality for educational settings. The implications for advancing EF research and practice in Indonesia, particularly in education, are discussed, emphasizing the need for reliable, valid, culturally sensitive, and accessible assessment tools.
