Abstract

The omnipresence of 4Cs at tertiary education has shifted the attention of language classroom teachings toward the mastery of multifaceted intelligences. Resultant teaching praxis subsequently calls forth students’ high literacy, which affects the nature and extent of success and failure. This study strived to scrutinize how the 4Cs approach in Reading courses scaffolds students’ multidimensional 21st-century learning competencies. Data were collected through online survey and focus group discussion, with deductive and inductive content analysis subsequently operative. The findings have shed lights on how 4Cs-based reading instructions help teachers to create learning environment commensurate with the demand of 21st-century learning, which aids students’ learning in gaining metacognitive tools for high literacy. With clear framework of collaborative work and scaffolding, teachers can trigger and further direct students’ achievement goals and social goals towards high literacy.

Abstract

Grounded within academic emotion and transactional reading theory, the present study investigates the understudied struggling readers’ academic emotions after taking part in three blended literature circles in an English class at tertiary education. Thirteen Physics Education students partook in the research. Data were garnered by open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, the results of which were analyzed by directed content analysis bound to Academic emotion theory. The research findings explicate that blended literature circles pave the path to propelling reading-to-learn endeavors. Despite sub-optimal reading proficiency, the students’ academic emotions depict the efforts towards achievement goals, primarily laden with a mastery approach, and social goals through dialogic reading in blended literature circles.

Abstract

This research was an experimental research. The purpose of this study was to know whether or not there was a significant effect of the use of Indiret Method on the grammar achievement of the tenth grade students of SMAN Ambulu. The design of this study was quasi experimental with Post-test only design. The treatment was given to the Experimental group that was taught grammar by using Indirect Method while the Control group was taught grammar by using Direct Method, the method used by the teacher in the actual classes. The primary data of this research were obtained from the students’ score of grammar test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation result with significant level of 5% showed 0.03 value, which was lower than 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis (HO) was rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Indirect Method on the Grammar Achievement of the Tenth Grade Students at SMAN Ambulu. Therefore, the English teachers are recommended to apply Indirect Method when teaching grammar.

Abstract

This study focuses on EFL teachers’ readiness in using technology in teaching English. According to the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework (Davis, 1989), people’s perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness will lead to the person’s attitude toward using technology. Qualitative case study was carried out to explore EFL teachers’ readiness to use technology in teaching. The data from interview analyzed using thematic analysis. To enrich the data, observation also employed. In this case, teachers’ attitude towards using is almost in the same height and generally low. However, their perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness result are varying. Based on the findings in my study, I found that the teachers feel that technology for learning is very useful for them. However, they feel it is not easy to use and also somewhat those teachers were resistant to accept the existence of technology in teaching. These shows that that the teachers in the school are not ready yet to use technology in teaching English.

Abstract

Intensive reading helps students to understand the meaning of a word and is one of the college courses that is useful in learning. In this study, the researcher identified the difficulties and strategies used by EFL learners in intensive reading. The objective of this research was to identify the difficulties and the strategies used by EFL learners in intensive reading. The research used a qualitative case study that attempted to identifying reading difficulties and strategies among EFL learners in intensive reading. The researcher analyzed the data using thematic analysis model adopted from Braun and Clarke (2006). The result of this research showed that the students’ difficulties were divided into two types: reading difficulties related to learning goals and psychological barriers. When difficulties arise in the areas of learning objectives that students can use to guide their performance with these objectives, it can hinder students' reading comprehension. Studies also found that students face reading difficulties related to psychological barriers such as attention deficits, poor retention, lack of self-confidence, lack of motivation and shyness. The result of this research is expected to be able to give meaningful contributions for, teachers or lecturers, EFL learners and other researchers.
