Abstract

As multilingual learners who have an array of linguistic and cognitive skills, Indonesian students have been exposed to various learning experiences intended to improve their metalinguistic awareness. They are expected to possess integrated competence of languages learnt. In light with this, this paper aims at analyzing students’ argumentative elements produced in their English argumentative writing, evaluating how far these elements contribute to the overall quality of their writing, and considering the influence of their status as multilingual learners. The result reveals that the students’ way in structuring their arguments influenced the quality of their writing. The developed writing were mostly produced by the students who were able to provide the equal weight of defending arguments and counter arguments which were elaborated in multiple arguments.  Furthermore, since providing proper elaboration for the counterarguments was one of major problems in the students’ argumentative writing, the strategies to integrate arguments with counterarguments were also presented.

Abstract

This study discusses the sentence fragments and run-on sentences that are made by the students in writing essays. The research design was descriptive. The sample in this study was 31 students of English Department Academic year 2018/2019 of Universitas Negeri Padang. The instrument used was the final exam sheet of essay writing. Based on this research, students made 29 fragments and 38 run-on sentences. This study also showed that most students made comma splices that reach to 37 numbers.

Abstract

Clause and phrase construction is one of the essential components needs to be mastered by English students in order to support their writing. However, this is the problem that students still encounter. The purposes of this study are to figure out students’ difficulties and the causes of the difficulties in reducing adjective clauses into participial phrases. 30 students were selected using cluster random sampling technique from a population of 162 second-year English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data gained from questionnaire were analyzed using quantitative approach and descriptive method. The findings demonstrate that understanding adjective clauses (68.8%), using pronouns (64.6%), and constructing verbs (62.8%) are three aspects students found the most problematic. In addition, using relative pronouns is a bit challenging for them (46.6%). It was also found out that these difficulties are significantly influenced by the instructional method utilized (80%), students’ motivation (66.3%), their educational background (65.8%), and learning strategies (63.1%). Indeed, family environment (54.6%) has a fair impact on it as well.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate English students' difficulties with parallel structure in the TOEFL test. Descriptive research with a quantitative approach is used in this study. The subject of this research was English education students at Universitas Negeri Padang in the 2019 academic year. To collect data, the researcher conducted a grammar test. In this study, the data were analyzed in several steps, including classifying student responses as correct or incorrect, calculating student test scores, calculating the percentage of difficulty in each skill, and determining the level of difficulty in each question. The test result shows that the students face difficulties in answering TOEFL questions related to parallel structure in the structure and written expression section. It can be seen in the average student test score, which is 56. Parallel structure with comparison is the most difficult skill with a percentage of 46.3%. On top of that, skills related to parallel structure with coordinate conjunctions get a percentage of student difficulty of 45.6%, while skills related to parallel structure with paired conjunctions get a percentage of student difficulty of 41%. Based on the results of calculating the difficulty level of the questions, there are 2 questions in the difficult category, 21 questions in the medium category, and 7 questions in the easy category.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the students’errors in translating abstaract from Indonesian to English at English educations program of Universitas Negeri Padang. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The translation task was used as the instrument of the research.The text that was used by reasercher was thesis abstracts. The results of the study was found with the frequency of 47 times of errors. There are missing word in 11 times (23,4%), word order in 5 times (10,63%), Incorrect word in 29 times ( 61,7%), and the last was punctuation in 2 times of errors (4,25%). The Unkwown word was not found in the data.

Abstract

This research is classified as a quasi-experimental research that is aimed to study whether or not the implementation of EXO-OLO TASK Learning Model does give a significant effect in improving students’ English ability. The study’s population was eighth-grade students at SMPN 43 in Padang. The population consists of 88 students who are classified into three classes. VIII 1 was selected as the experimental class while VIII 2 was selected as the control class through cluster random sampling method. This research was conducted over eight meetings and during school hours. In order to collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test design. The pre-test and the post-test contained multiple choice questions. The result of the data analysis indicated that the null hypothesis (H0) examined in this study could not be accepted because the significant value of the two-tailed paired sample t-test was less than 0.05. The alternative hypothesis (HA), which indicated that the implementation of EXO-OLO TASK Learning Model does give a significant effect in improving students’ English ability, is accepted as the result of this study.

Abstract

 Grammar plays a crucial role in research writing, as clear and well-structured sentences are essential for effectively conveying meaning to readers. The objective of this study is to find out the mistakes which the students commonly make in reducing adjective clause in thesis background. The population of this research were English Department of UNP students’ thesis with 50 theses in total. The sample were 50 theses chosen by using total sampling. This research used descriptive research. According to the data found, it can be seen that the most mistake in writing adjective clause reduction made by students is reduction of adjective clause with verb in passive voice with 17 mistakes, followed by reduction of clause with verb in active voice with 3 mistakes made and no mistakes made in reduction of clause with verb in perfect tense because the researcher found no adjective clause reduction with verb in perfect tense made by students. In addition, the percentage of mistakes made by students in reducing adjective clause was 12.12% of 165 reduced adjective clauses found.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills in learning English. Teacher - made videos are the right method for learning in this digital age, with teachers being able to make videos according to the abilities of their students. The purpose of this study was to investigate what the sixth-grade SMP Muhammadiyah students in Padang thought about using videos made by teachers to teach speaking. SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Padang students contributed to the study's population. The population consisted of 128 students, class VIII 1 was selected to be the sample in this study through the cluster random sampling method. Two sessions were held for conducting this research, and two videos were made accessible. Researchers used a questionnaire with two indicators—perceived effectiveness and perceived interest—to collect data. Students at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Padang feel that using teacher-produced videos helps them recognize the lessons and increases their interest in learning to speak English, which means the result in this study is very positive perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to learn and understand the difficulties faced by Universitas Negeri Padang's sixth-semester students who are translating texts from English to Indonesian. The qualitative descriptive research design is used in this study. Guidelines for the test and interview were used to get the data. The participants in this study were chosen by the researcher using cluster random sampling. Participants in this study included 20 sixth-semester English Education students at Universitas Negeri Padang who had taken a translation course and were enrolled for the 2019–2020 academic year. This research result shows that the most common difficulties that faced by students is grammatical meaning with 44,5%. In linguistic factor, 80% or 8 of 10 students felt difficult in translating text. The struggles of the students were caused by a variety of circumstances. The significance of the source text was difficult for the students to comprehend. As a result, it is difficult for them to translate it into the intended text. The finding is that linguistic issues contributed more to the students' difficulties than non-linguistic ones.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum has just been implemented to resolve Indonesia's long-standing educational issues, specifically the inability of Indonesian students to comprehend simple reading and apply basic math concepts. The two main points highlighted in the Merdeka curriculum are the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (Projek Penguatan Profile Pelajar Pancasila (P5)  and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL). In order to fulfill the TaRL aspect, differentiated learning is adopted which emphasizes the student-centered learning process and accommodates the different needs of students. This study aims to look at the perceptions of students regarding the implementation of differentiated learning in English language learning. The population of this study were 235 students in tenth grade at SMA Negeri 1 Tilatang Kamang. The samples were 65 students who were randomly selected using cluster random sampling. Descriptive quantitative was used to analyze and describe the questionnaire data. The finding shows (1) learning environment is an important aspect in the successful implementation of differentiated learning strategies in learning English (2) students learn better when given the freedom to learn based on their individual learning profiles (learning styles), learning readiness (abilities), and interests. In conclusion, differentiating content, process, product, and learning environment is an effective and fun learning strategies for students.
