Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of EXO OLO Task learning model on students’ achievement in English learning. Participants in this study are science eleventh graders at SMAN 1 Kamang Magek. There are 42 students and classified into two classes. The control group is XI MIPA 1. This class consists of 21 students. The experimental group is XI MIPA 2, consists of 21 students. In this study, the researcher employed total sampling. The study was conducted over eight meetings and the experimental class chosen was XI MIPA 2. The essay test was used as the primary data collection tool. The dataset initially comprised 23 questions. However, during the validity and reliability assessments, three questions were identified as invalid and subsequently revised by the researcher. The two-tailed t-test result indicated a significance value of 0.000, meaning the significance value was below 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis H0 could not be accepted and the alternative hypothesis H1 could be accepted. This indicates an enhancement in students' English learning outcomes through the utilization of the EXO OLO Task learning model.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out what strategies the students use in employing translation and what are they beliefs  about the use of translation in learning English. The subject of this research was students of class K6 from the academic year 2022 at Universitas Negeri Padang. This research was conducted using quantitative methods, using a questionnaire adapted from Ahmad Muzdalifah (2016) as an instrument of data collection. The result of this research shows that the students believe in the use of translation help them with the English skills such as reading, writing, speaking and use strategies for using translation in learning English for reading and speaking. According to the findings, students positively believe in the use of translation as a strategy made extensive use of it when they were studying in their learning process.

Abstract

Social media can affect people’s life in every aspect by several ways according to the user’s intention and frequency while using it. People could learn, play, and discuss with each other through social media. So, there are not only adult people who are addicted to use social media, but also the students. It could have a relation with learning English, especially learning vocabulary. This study aims to find out whether the students use social media sites to learn in order to improve or increase their English vocabulary. Furthermore, this study objectified among EFL students especially SMK Negeri 3 Padang in Indonesia. The population and the sample will be taken for this study is the students in grade 11 which totally 303 students averagely. In this study, the researcher used questionnaires as a tool. Thus, the result of this study shows that the respondents, students of SMK Negeri 3 Padang, utilize social media for enhancing their English vocabulary knowledge and produce a positive category on perceptions in using social media for learning vocabulary which means that they consider that social media can help them in terms of learning. Although, there are still several challenges faced by the students when learning vocabulary via social media.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the translation quality produced by students using printed dictionary and post-editing on machine translation tools. Participants in this research were students from K7-22 class who have taken Introduction to Translation Class from English Education at Universitas Negeri Padang, totaling 27 students. This research was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research and using translation test as the instrument. Researcher gave two different texts with the same level. When using a printed dictionary, students showed good level of translation quality, with a score of 2.20. Also, when using post-editing on machine translation tools it produces a higher score of 2.65, which shows that the level of translation quality is very good. It can be concluded that comparing the quality of student translations from the two versions that post-editing on machine translation tools provides better translation quality than printed dictionary. However, in each element, printed dictionary and post-editing on machine translation tools show that the accuracy is same. These two translation versions only help students in terms of acceptability and readability. For accuracy, students need to be improved a lot when translating text because there are still shortcomings when using printed dictionary and post-editing on machine translation tools.

Abstract

These researchers are interested in conducting research aims to reveal the perceptions of English teachers at SMAN 7 Padang regarding changes in assessment that have occurred in the Merdeka curriculum. This research uses mixed methods to collect, analyze, and integrate quantitative and qualitative data in one study. From the analysis data, it is concluded that English teachers have a positive perception of assessment changes in the Merdeka curriculum. The results of the research show that assessments in the Merdeka curriculum, namely diagnostic assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment are effective assessments to help teachers recognize, monitor, and measure students' abilities and understanding of the material so that teachers can identify and evaluate difficulties that arise faced by each student. This is because the implementation of the three assessments in the Merdeka curriculum is by their respective functions, such as the diagnostic assessment given by the teacher at the beginning of each semester, the formative assessment given by the teacher on each learning topic, and the summative assessment given by the teacher. given by the teacher at the end of each semester. Even though there are many benefits, teachers still experience several obstacles such as computers / PCs that still need to be provided and a stable internet network to access materials and lesson questions, this must be overcome with government assistance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation quality and challenges faced by English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) in translating onomatopoeia from English into Indonesian. The research focuses on two key aspects of translation quality: accuracy and acceptability, as well as the common challenges encountered during the translation process. A descriptive qualitative method was used, employing a translation test and a questionnaire as instruments, with 24 students from the 2022 Translation class serving as participants. The findings show that the students' translations were generally categorized as almost accurate and almost acceptable. The study also revealed several key challenges, including subjectivity in interpretation, phonological differences, and differences in register and style between the source and target languages. These results suggest that translating onomatopoeia requires not only linguistic competence but also cultural awareness and creative strategy use. The study is expected to contribute to improving translation pedagogy and serve as a reference for future research focusing on translation strategies for onomatopoeia.

Abstract

English language proficiency is one of the important competencies that have to be possessed by the students at Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. As a health education institution, English language skills can support students in accessing information, communicating, and expanding their horizons in the health sector. One approach that can be used to help students learn English is by using pedagogical translation. Pedagogical translation refers to the use of translation as a tool in the English learning process. This study aimed to find the students’ perception on the use of pedagogical translation in learning English at Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. The method used in this study was descriptive research that used closed-ended questionnaire and structured written interview to collect the data. The participants of this study were 40 students of Poltekkes Kemenkes Padang. The findings showed that mostly the students have positive perception that the using of pedagogical translation provides many benefits related to the students’ language proficiency, such as, remembering and discovering new English vocabulary, improving their understanding in learning English, and making a progress in learning English.

Abstract

Translation is a crucial skill for English Education students, specifically when it comes to practical texts like tourism brochures. This study investigated the quality and problems in students’ translation results of tourism brochures from Indonesian to English. Conducting a descriptive approach, the assessment was based on Nababan et al. (2012) for analyzing translation quality and Mathieu (2003) for identifying translation problems. 22 fourth-year English Education students of Universitas Negeri Padang were instructed to translate seven tourism brochure passages. The analysis revealed that the overall students’ translation was fair, with an average score of 2.27, consisting of noticeable problems in accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Moreover, 456 data of identified problems were found, with 175 data (38.37%) of word-choice problems and 131 data of grammatical problems being the most prevalent. There are also problems in cultural with 77 data (16.88%), rhetorical with 53 data (11.62%), and pragmatic with 20 data (4.38%). These findings suggest that students struggled in producing a natural translation of tourism brochures, especially in choosing appropriate equivalents and grammatical construction.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and causes of errors in translating advertisement texts made by second-year English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang. Use a qualitative descriptive method, the research involved a population of 219 students across 10 classes (K1–K10). A sample of 22 students was selected using cluster random sampling. The instruments used in data collection were a translation test. The findings indicate that the most frequent type of error found in students’ translations from Indonesian to English was deviation of meaning, accounting for 60% of the 35 identified error cases. These results highlight the need for greater emphasis on meaning accuracy in translation teaching and learning processes.
