Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the typical classroom management of an English teacher in a vocational high school in Padang. The sample of this research was two English teachers, teacher A, and teacher B. They taught the tenth-grade students, once a week, for 3x45minutes. The data were analyzed by using the theory of Wright and collected by taking video and field notes. This study limited the day to gain the data in six days. Finally, it showed that teachers in SMK 3 Padang were having a different style of classroom management personally, and found was a teacher in SMKN 3 Padang has issue in time management and discipline.

Abstract

English Language Teaching Program at UNP is trying to improve its curriculum in order to get certification from AUN-QA (ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance). One requirement needed is getting feedback from Alumni on some criteria set by AUN-QA. This study aimed to find the alumni’s perception on Expected Learning Outcomes of English Language Teaching Program at UNP and to find what improvement needed based on the alumni’s perception. The data were collected through an online questionnaire given to 74 alumni who were divided into two groups: the alumni who work in education field (46 participants) and the ones who work in non-education field (28 participants). The questionnaire given consists of 29 items. The data were analyzed by finding the mean scores for each item. Then, the mean scores were converted into degree of perception. As the results, the mean scores got were 3.58 for vision, missions, and profile of the alumni; 3.66 for purposes of the program; and 3.60 for expected learning outcomes. Even though there are few comments given by the alumni who gave negative responses, most of them have very good perception on English Language Curriculum at UNP. From the finding, it can be concluded that there is slight improvement needed based on the alumni’s perception. Key words: ELT Curriculum, AUN-QA, Alumni’s Perception

Abstract

The variation of students in acquiring and understanding knowledge is influenced by learning styles. But, based on the observation, the students are less aware of their own preferences in learning styles. This research was conducted to analyze the learning styles preferred by students in the Basic Listening classes of English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). This descriptive research used a quantitative descriptive method. The research instrument was questionnaires. There were 2 questionnaires used in this research. First VARK questionnaire (Version 7.8) designed by Fleming. VARK questionnaire represented visual (V), aural (A), read/write (R), and kinaesthetic (K). It consisted of 16 questions with four options. The second questionnaire was Index of Learning Styles (ILS) designed by Richard M. Felder and Barbara A. Soloman in 1997. This questionnaire was categorized into four dimensions, namely active or reflective, visual or verbal, sensitivity or intuition, and sequential or global. It consisted of 44 questions with 2 options. The population of this research was the students in Basic Listening Classes of English Department. The sample was 60 students who were chosen randomly from the total population using Simple Random Sampling. This result of this research showed that the students had various learning styles and mostly their learning styles were dominated by visual style.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools are required to conduct distance learning or online learning. English is one of the important subjects that students should master in order to get a good achievement. One of the causes influencing students' results in learning that became an essential role in affecting students' results in learning is the involvement of parents. This study aims to find out a significant correlation between parents’ involvement and grade eight students’ English learning achievements at MTsN 1 Padang Pariaman during covid-19 in the academic year 2021/2022. This research used quantitative research with a correlational design. This research involved 35 of the eight-grade students of MTsN 1 Padang Pariaman. The random sampling technique was used in this research. The researcher found that there is a positive correlation between parents’ involvement and students’ English achievement. It is proved by the rxy (0.476) which is bigger than rtable (0.334). It is considered that the null hypothesis (Ho) in this research is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) which states that there is a correlation between parents’ involvement and students’ English achievement is accepted. In conclusion, there is a positive correlation between parents’ involvement and students’ English achievement. It means that the higher parents’ involvement in students’ English learning, the better their English achievement is.

Abstract

This article deals with the integration of TPACK at SMA-MAN in Solok. The research undertaken aimed to know what are EFL teachers’ perceptions about TPACK in teaching English. This study was descriptive qualitatie research. The participants of the research were  20 English teachers at five schools in Solok. The instrumentation of this research were collected from questionnaire and interview that have done by the teachers. As for the points to the instrumentations there were aspect of TK, CK, PK, PCK, and TPACK. The findings of this research shows that EFL teachers have good perceptions about the integration of TPACK in teaching English.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the content knowledge of senior high school English teachers in West Pasaman Regency, West Sumatera. The content knowledge is about the teachers' knowledge of the material and how the teacher developed the material. The study was descriptive-qualitative and employed two methods, a document and a questionnaire, to gather data. Eight teachers from various schools were chosen to participate in this study using a purposive sampling technique. The findings of this study indicate that teachers have a good mastery of the subject matter. However, none of the teachers developed or adapted the material. Therefore, it is still necessary to strengthen teacher content knowledge so that they may build materials designed to meet their students' requirements.

Abstract

The researcher conducted descriptive qualitative research. The source of data in this research divided into two parts: teachers and documents. the researcher conducted the research in Solok Regency, West Sumatera. the researcher used a purposive or judgmental sampling technique. In purposive or judgmental sampling, the researcher chose this technique based on some criteria, those were the location, school accreditation, experienced teachers, and grade eight. The researcher used two instruments in this research, which were document and observation in gathering the information that the researcher was needed.  In detail, the pedagogical knowledge divided into three criteria. Those were preparing the lesson or lesson plan (approach of teaching, methods of teaching, class activity, and assessment), implementing the class activity (classroom management), and evaluation or implementation of assessment. In preparing the lesson, all teachers use the same approach and methods of teaching language. This showed a positive result that they design the lesson plan used pedagogical knowledge without left-behind the 2013 Curriculum instruction. Also, they were able to perform the learning stages with good classroom management and assessment session. However, there are some improvements still needed for the teaching performance due to not all the learning stages well implemented. This case especially happened in the whilst-teaching.

Abstract

The development of technology in the 21st century impacts all aspects of life, one of which is the field of education. Therefore, the teachers must be able to master technologies that can support learning so that they become 21st-century learning characters. This study seeks the technological knowledge of English teachers at Bukittinggi City in learning. This research used descriptive qualitative research because it explores and describes the ability of Technological Knowledge for English teachers. The participants of this study were the teachers and the students in Bukittinggi City. The selecting of participants used purposive sampling techniques and the selection of students used the accidental sampling method. The instruments were a questionnaire given to teachers and students, and semi-structured interviews. Then the supporting data was the lesson plan sent by a representative from the interviewee. In analyzing the questionnaire used quantitative method. For the teacher's questionnaire, the results are in the form of an average and then categorize their technological knowledge. And then, the students’ questionnaires obtained results in the form of percentages. Then for the lesson plan, use the document review method and the restatement interview from what was said. The findings of the research in the knowledge and application of technological knowledge has begun to be applied. However, most teachers’ abilities and skills in technological knowledge were in the average category. Therefore, the understanding and utilization of technological knowledge for English Vocational High School teachers must be expanded further in designing lesson plans, teaching and learning processes, and assessing the students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the challenges faced by English student teachers on implementing Kurikulum Merdeka during teaching practicum program. This study used qualitative research using interview methods with 13 student teachers who were in teaching practicum program. The results showed that student teachers who had been interviewed showed clear and convincing evidence about the challenges that they faced on implementing Kurikulum Merdeka during teaching practicum program. According to the student teachers, they faced challenges on implementing Kurikulm Merdeka because Kurikulum Merdeka is new for them. When they learned micro teaching they only focused on the Kurikulum 2013, but it turned out that when they were in the field they had to teach based on the Kurikulum Merdeka. Almost all the respondent faced challenges in implementing Kurikulum Merdeka such as, challenges in designing teaching modules, challenges in class management, challenges in learning projects, and doing assessments based on Kurikulum Merdeka

Abstract

Grammar is one of the basics of a language and must be mastered by English students to master English language skills. One of the causes that influence students' grammar mastery is the teacher's teaching style. This research intends to determine the significant relationship between the teaching style of English teachers and students' grammar mastery at SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. This research used quantitative research with a correlational design. This research involved 80 students of grade 11 and grade 12 of SMA Pertiwi 1 Padang. The instrument of this research was a grammar test and a questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire result, the English teachers used a formal authority style with mean scores of 17.18 and 17.38. Based on the data analysis for the grammar test, it was found that the mean score of students from 11th grade was 34.1, while the mean score of students from 12th grade was 48.1. The researcher found a very high correlation between English teachers' teaching styles and students' grammar mastery. It is proven by rxy (0.995) greater than rtable (0.220). In conclusion, there is a correlation exists between English teachers' teaching styles and students' grammar mastery.
