Abstract

Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) has a high economic value. Females grow faster than males. Sex reversal is one of genetic engineering by manipulating their hormone that is able to change the phenotype from male to female or vice versa. "Cepoka" eggplant (Solanum torvum) has been known as a medicinal and kitchen ingredient. Phytochemical test on S. torvum showed revealed that this plant contains tannins, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids and terpenoids. Solasodine is a steroidial glycoalkaloid compound contained in S. torvum which has anti-fertility effects. Besides solasodine, the content of Gosipol in phenol compounds with BM 518.55 Dalton also has been known to be able to inhibit spermatogenesis by reducing the concentration, motility and viability of spermatozoa. The solasodine contained in S. torvum has the potential to be used for sex transfer in A. testudineus. Based on many studies, the utilize of solasodine from S. torvum could decrease the motility of spermatozoa. Even the results of the histological test on spermatogenesis, S. torvum gave a positive trend in inhibiting tilapia testicular cells in microscopic observation. Based on it, the chances of successful feminization of S. torvum utilizing cepoka eggplant are very high. A factor that must be considered in feminization is the age of the larvae, immersion dosige, immersion time and environment.Key Words : eggplant, Climbing perch, sex reversal, spermatozoa, solasodine

Abstract

Infection of Edwardsiella tarda bacteria in farmed catfish could lead to mass mortality of up to 80% of the fish. Sour eggplant (Solanum ferox) contains antibacterial compounds which are capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria and can kill infectious bacteria. The study aimed to determine the effect of S. ferox extract on the immune response of catfish (Pangasius djambal) and obtain its optimum dose to control the infection of E. tarda. The study used an experimental trial in which treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of four treatment doses of sour eggplant extract (0, 300, 600, and 900 ppm) and control (immersion of commercial antibiotic) with three replicates. The test fish used were 150 catfish with a length of 14-16 cm. The treatments were applied by soaking the test fish in the test solutions for 7 days. The measured parameters included clinical symptoms, total erythrocytes, total leukocytes, leukocyte differential, phagocytic activity, prevalence, absolute weight growth, and survival. The results showed that the immersion of catfish in S. ferox extract solution increased the immune responses of catfish infected by E. tarda.  The results of this study concluded that S. ferox extract at a dose of 600 ppm effectively increases phagocytic activity which then optimizes the immune response and blood profile of catfish.

Abstract

One of the obstacles often experienced by catfish farmers is attacks by the motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS). Vaccination through immersion is an effective way to improve the immune system in the body of catfish, but it does not provide optimal results so it is necessary to add a hyperosmotic infiltration method to maximize vaccine absorption. This study aimed to determine an optimum salinity range to maximize the absorption of the Aeromonas hydrophila vaccine in catfish. This study used a completely randomized design experimental method with five treatment levels and three replications, including negative control (Kn), positive control (Kp), 3 ppt salinity immersion (P1), 6 ppt salinity immersion (P2), and 9 ppt salinity immersion (P3) in catfish sizing 12-15 cm. The parameters observed included antibody titer, relative percent survival, survival rate (SR), total erythrocytes, total leukocytes, water quality, and clinical symptoms. The results of the study showed that the highest value was at P2 (6 ppt) with an antibody titer value of 8.0 ± 0.0, relative percent survival 100%, survival rate 100%, and total erythrocytes 2.80 x 106 cells mm-3, while total leukocytes in P2 (6 ppt) showed the lowest value because leukocytes fought against pathogen attacks so that the number of cells decreased. It was concluded that immersion in 6 ppt salinity was the best salinity for catfish and was significantly different (P<0.05) from other treatments because the vaccine absorption process occurred optimally so that it could improve the catfish's immune system.

Abstract

The community service activity involves empowering the community of students at the Petermas Orphanage through the cultivation of catfish using the Mutiara aquaponic system, aiming for food self-sufficiency. This activity is motivated by several issues, including the lack of nutritional needs in the form of animal and plant proteins, irregularity in donors, and limited entrepreneurial skills, leading to insufficient provisions. Additionally, there are unused and neglected concrete ponds due to the limited knowledge of the students and administrators regarding cultivation. The main goal of this program is to address all the challenges faced by the Petermas Orphanage. Furthermore, the program aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of students and administrators in aquaculture. This program is conducted offline and begins with awareness and training activities, the installation of aquaponic ponds, soaking and settling of cultivation water. Subsequently, catfish seed dispersal, aquaponic vegetable planting, and the construction of aquaponic frameworks take place. Following that, there is monitoring, aquaponic catfish harvesting, and activity evaluation. This community service project has achieved positive and satisfactory results. The harvest is highly satisfying, with fresh water spinach and pokcoy vegetables in good condition. The catfish, raised under these conditions, are of high quality and the appropriate size for consumption. One kilogram of catfish contains 7-8 fish, measuring between 20-30 cm, with a weight of 60-85 grams. The PKM-PM program can achieve food self-sufficiency, meet the needs for animal and plant protein, and create new entrepreneurship opportunities for the Petermas Orphanage.
