Abstract

The relationship between sacred rituals of congregational worship and the spatial configuration of Sulthoni Plosokuning Mosque The design of current Mosque architecture has been found as a common phenomenon to have a similar design with other buildings such as office buildings, museums, monuments or even sculptures. The Mosque architecture, in fact, should not only accommodate pragmatic activities but also must have a spatial configuration related to the symbolic ritual activities that could stimulate the congregation’s awareness in entering the sacred space. The current research discusses the relationship between the sacred ritual of group worship and the spatial configuration of Mosque architecture. It aimed revealing how the sacred function of congregational rituals is correlated to the spatial configuration of Sulthoni Plosokuning Mosque and the specific aspects that become the indicators of the correlation. The analysis uses an elaboration of universal sacrality theory, the concept of rituals in Mosque architecture, architectural configuration theory, and architectural anatomy theory. The result of analysis showed that of the seven aspects of spatial configuration being discussed, four aspects were found to have dominant relationship with sacred ritual worship, three aspects had less dominant relations and one aspect has no relationship with the sacred ritual of worship. © 2020 Nadya Wicitra Paramitha, Purnama Salura

Abstract

Mosques as a religious building for the Moslem Community have two orientations and they include the Qibla as the main and direction of the sky as the secondary. Praying is the main element of worship for Moslems and is recommended to be led towards the Qibla or upward direction. The mosque has been discovered not to have a sacred space but Qibla, mihrab, and Qibla marker walls are considered sacred. These sacred orientation signs and markers have been used and developed since the beginning but their existence and understanding have been eroded due to the influence of locals as well as development. Currently, the majority of the mosques in Indonesia have a centralized and strong orientation towards the upper direction when they are expected to have the main orientation in the form of Qibla direction. This study was, therefore, conducted to examine the anatomy of these mosques using semiotic theory by comparing the two mosques with several signs and markers of sacred orientation in the country. The results showed there are new signs and markers but the old ones are still significant in the mosques in the present time.

Abstract

Globalization is being experienced throughout the world with its impact also observed in architecture, even in traditional villages of Indonesia. Some of them have, however, been able to maintain their identity such as the mass-space pattern of the customary village of Bali Aga Mountains in Bali which is discovered not to have changed. This research was, therefore, conducted to determine the relationship between the activities of the traditional society and their mass-space patterns using the customary village of Bali Aga Tenganan Pegringsingan as the case study. This involved the selection of respondents purposively and collection of data using cross sections by identifying unchanged buildings, taking photos, videos, drones, and through direct interviews in the field. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively based on structuring theory or ordering principles and the results confirmed the mass-space pattern in Tenganan Pegringsingan village was built due to the close relations with the traditional activities of the society. The findings can be used in developing architecture by local governments as policymakers as well as academic architects and practitioners, and the wider society. © 2020 Lydia Dewi Setiawan, Purnama Salura, Bachtiar Fauzy

Abstract

There has been a decline in the form and function of Sundanese vernacular architecture for large buildings due to the absence of artifacts in village houses. The data on palace or keraton and terraced roofs are only found in lontar and from outside observers in the XVI century. Meanwhile, the phenomenon of the bale nyungcung roof emerged on the mosque in the XVI-XIX centuries at West Java after disappearing for more or less two centuries. The reappearance makes it interesting to study this concept, especially with the focus on its relationship with the inner room of the mosque. This research was conducted on the Great Mosque spread in Sunda Tatar such as the West Java and Banten Provinces with buildings of Majalaya, Manonjaya, and Banten used as case studies. It was conducted qualitatively and interpretatively using the building anatomical theory to analyze the scope of shape and the Bale Nyungcung roof. The results showed the relationship between the roof and the inner space is a reflection of the adjustment in the mosque's basic reference with the Bale Nyungcung roof used as one of the Sundanese local building features.

Abstract

Cirebon is a unique city with 3 palaces, including Kasepuhan, Kanoman, Kacirebonan. The palaces are influenced by the history and culture of the Baluwarti palace, which is believed to have specific concepts in the arrangement and placement of building masses. This study examines the concepts underlying Baluwarti in the 3 Cirebon palaces. This is achieved by first studying the basis of Palace's trust rules used to regulate the mass placing of the palace building. Subsequently, the study uses an architectural anatomical theory consisting of the building site and scope, and the property-composition theory to explore the orientation and position of the Palace building. The results showed that the concept underlying Baluwarti in the 3 Cirebon palaces consists of Javanese and Sundanese cosmologies as building orientation, the type of land on which it was built, and Mahameru and the building position. This research contributes to the general architecture in the uniqueness of historical, cultural and local values. Also, it provides architectural information regarding the concepts underlying Baluwarti in the 3 Cirebon palaces.

Abstract

The phenomenon of a single architectural form has become a global problem. This is also observed in Indonesia as indicated by the specific traditional architecture known as Osing in Banyuwangi. Therefore, this study focuses on the issue of the essence of space created from the surrounding elements in Osing traditional architecture using a qualitative method which involved prioritizing new reading tools including the Lincourt phenomenological approach and the architectural anatomy of Salura. The results showed that the activity forms a linear circular pattern while the lower scoping elements form a geometric arrangement and have a linear movement direction. Moreover, the roof structure shows the dynamic quality of the elements which move from front to back. It was also discovered that the scope of the Osing space is a barrier with the activities within the house isolated and inwardly oriented. The use of local natural materials also provides a warm, rustic and simple character as well as a chance for sustainability. Furthermore, the structures and constructions show that the architecture prioritizes honesty and simplicity. This, therefore, means the essence of space in Osing architecture is in Jrumah based on the space which was found to be closed, natural, simple character, and prioritizing honesty. These findings are expected to be an additional source of knowledge on Osing architecture, serve as input for architects in designing modern houses in Banyuwangi, and input for policymakers in formulating a strategy to preserve this traditional architecture.

Abstract

Abstract - After the Second Vatican Council was held, the Catholic Church which tends to be warm with its gothic style identity is now taking on more diverse forms because the church has begun to accept diversity on earth. The various forms of church buildings do not show their function as God's house. There are churches that look like malls, museums, stadiums, and so on. While the main function of the church is to accommodate liturgical activities which are symbolic activities to praise and worship God. As we know activities affect the space requirements, as well as liturgical activities that move linearly so that they affect the linear form of the church. Pope Benedict XVI became concerned about the fading of meaning in the catholic church, thus forming a congregation to discuss the meaning of sacredness in the church. It is important to discuss this to see if the meaning of the centralized form of the Catholic Church is similar to the meaning of the church in accordance with its linear activity. With that, the purpose of this study is to reveal the meaning of the liturgical zonation of the Catholic Church of St. Ignatius Loyola with a Spectrum of Meaning approach. The methodology used in this study is a descriptive method with a qualitative-deductive approach. The first method is to collect collective data by recording study object data and opening the building into 3 zones of liturgy space, called Narthex, Nave and Sanctuary with Theory Of Property And Composition. Second, to make reference to the plan and liturgical zonation of the Catholic Church with the approach of Martasudjita, Eliade, Hoffman, Jones, and Barrie. Third, data collection analysis by interview triangulation of sources to architects, church users, and church visitors with a semantic scale. Fourth, using the Spectrum of Meaning theory to reveal the meaning contained in each Zone Of Liturgy Spaces. The result of the study is the meaning of the liturgical zonation of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola is dominated by the meaning of collective convention with relation to man-made causality. The meaning of man-made causality creates universal convention that the composition of space and architectural elements forms a church related to the symbolic meaning that supports liturgical activities well and expresses the meaning of symbolic values that underlie faith events of liturgical activities. This research aims to be a reference for theoretical and practical architects, church managers, and people to understand the composition of space and architectural elements that create the architectural meaning of the Catholic Church. Abstract

This study discusses the spirit of place which is also known as the “genius loci” of two GPIB church buildings in Depok, Indonesia. It is important to note that the physical and spatial order of a structure theoretically has an expression usually interpreted according to the character and identity created by the observer or user. This means it is possible for buildings with the same function, liturgy, and space requirements but different physical arrangements to have the same spirit of place. The focus of this study is on the church of GPIB Immanuel and GPIB Pancaran Kasih in Depok and it was conducted qualitatively and descriptively through anatomical and phenomenological methods. The operational stage involves the emic steps which include field observations and structured or unstructured interviews for managers and informants doubling as the users of the buildings as well as ethical steps which are focused on the study of architectural theories. The results showed that the physical architectural order of the two churches creates a dynamic character and identity as well as a spirit of place even though they come from the same synod, order, and have the same liturgy and procession. This was discovered to be due to their similarities and differences.

Abstract

The case study is a research approach carried out in a natural, holistic, and in-depth setting about a unique, best practice, and bounded phenomenon. Even though it was rooted in social sciences, the case study has characteristics that are almost the same as a process of studying past architectural works (precedent studies) that have long been carried out in architecture. Unfortunately, precedent studies are sometimes only limited to documentation and descriptions of architectural works as physical objects, without critical, in-depth and holistic analysis of the decisions behind the design decisions of a precedent. On the other hand, previous research that discussed the case study approach in architecture tended to understand this approach as just a social research method that was simply applied in architectural research. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the terms of the 'case' itself. This research aims to provide a complete and in-depth understanding of the case study approach, to filter and elaborate this approach for architectural research. This research examines and elaborates on credible and recent literature on case study, both in social and architectural research. Elaboration from the literature review is used to formulate an operational framework based on architectural function-form-meaning. It is hoped that the results of this research will enrich architectural knowledge. The in-depth understanding is ultimately beneficial for improving existing architectural practices and becoming a source of knowledge for the general public.

Abstract

It has been contextual nowadays to observe the traditional feng-shui theory currently  becoming popular topic of discussion. The discussion covers the stake holders in building industry, developers, home owners, professionals, and among the academics of architecture education in the universities. What is the essence of the feng-shui concept? This paper approaches this topic from the different aspects of culture, socio-history, anthropology, ethnography, semiotics, and hermeneutic. It analyses in brief about its history, the major premises in feng-shui, any changes through the Chinese cultural history timeline,  the application tools to transfer the concept into real construction, the persistence of feng-shui in modern life, and the discussions within current contextual situation.
