Abstract

This study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students‟ recount text of the eight grade at SMP RK Budi Mulia Pematangsiantar. The aim of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used (2) to find out the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students‟ recount text. The instrument of collecting data was elicitation technique and interview. The data were analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The result of this study were the following, (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students‟ recount text, they were Theme Reteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig-zag/Linear Theme Pattern (Zig-zag/LTP). (2) The reason in use of thematic progression by students, they were: (a) the student‟s lack of knowledge about use of the thematic progression, (b) they also less interested in writing, (c) the students got resources from reading material and (d) the students got resources from english teacher‟s explanation.Keywords: Theme, Rheme, Thematic Progression, Recount Text

Abstract

In regard to the need for reading comprehension ability in the school, the objective of this research is to identify: (1) the difficulties faced by tenth grade students of Vocational High School in reading comprehension and (2) the factors influencing students’ reading comprehension difficulties. This research used both questionnaire and interview as the instruments of data collection. The data was analyzed based on the theory of Nuttal (1982) which reducing it by categorizing the relevant data. The participants of this study were tenth grade students of a Vocational High School in Medan. In doing this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, reducing data, and drawing conclusion. The result of the research showed that: (1) most of the students have difficulties in determining main idea, locating reference, understanding vocabulary, and making inference and (2) the factors influencing their difficulties were limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of fluency, lack of familiarity of the subject matter, and the problems in recalling after reading. The result of this research is expected to be beneficial for English teachers to identify their students’ difficulties in reading comprehension in order to have innovation or appropriate strategies in teaching reading and this research also can be useful for the students to be able to know their difficulties in reading skill.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to develop project assessment for student’s writing assessment of recount text and to design the appropriate assessment for Computer Network Enginering students grade X at SMK Negeri 2 Binjai. It used qualitative research method to collect and analyze the teacher’s authentic assessment. The data of the study were taken from English teacher of Computer Network Engineering grade X at SMK Negeri 2 Binjai. The findings showed from the existing assessment analysis, interview analysis, and questionnaires analysis. The average of the project assessment is 4,6 and the percentage is 92% The result showed that the development of project assessment at SMK Negeri 2 Binjai is categorized in “Very Good”, category. It showed that the development of project assessment categorized “Very Good” due to some obstacle and supporting factors. Project assessment development already measured the all aspects of writing skill. Keywords: Project assessment, development, writing, Computer Network Engineering.

Abstract

This study described politeness strategies used by the English teachers one of secondary school in Medan. The source of the data was two English teachers of class VIII and IX in one of the junior high school in Medan, Indonesia. This study was analyzed politeness strategies in the teaching learning process according Brown and Levinsons’ (1987). The data collection technique was video recording and interviewing.The findings were (1) there were four politeness strategies; Bald on Record 137 (47,08%), Positive Politeness 89 (30,58%), Negative Politeness 48 (16,49%), and Off Record 17 (5,84%). (2) Bald on Record was realized to make the close relationship between teachers and students. Positive Politeness strategies were realized to give respect to students. Negative Politeness was realized to maintain closer friends among them and Off Record was realized to give the students the opportunity to care for the teacher said.This study was referred Politeness, it is influenced by Power, Distance, and Relationship, and affected by speech events and politeness is the use of the right word in the power context, it is determined by the rules that are prevalent in society. The result was constributed teachers, linguists, other researcher sociolingustics lecturers and government that impicated with directly or indirectly involved to online learning as the classroom and the teaching learning process at school are suggested to apply this politeness strategies which put impact students’ attitude and behavior and to elaborated of politeness, politeness strategies, the reason of politeness strategies, E-Learning and Teacher and students communication.

Abstract

This study aims at exploring the strengths of extensive reading and intensive reading (EXIT) integration by involving the use of digital-platform base worksheet in optimizing the students’ reading skill. The foci include revealing the students’ perspectives towards such a hybrid implementation as well as theoretical justifications to the significances of EXIT integration and digital-platform base worksheet in reading activities. This descriptive qualitative study took place in a state university in North Sumatera ad involved 30 students of English education taking Writing class. Questionnaire, interview, and documentation were used to collect the data.  The qualitative data were then analyzed to meet triangulation data validity. It was found that the students perceive the significances of EXIT integration and roles of digital-platform base worksheet are oriented to optimize their reading comprehension. Documentation also showed the students’ interests and motivation in EXIT using digital-platform base improved. Exploration to teachers’ perspectives towards the same treatment is suggested to see the significances of each reading technique and reading tool from different point of view.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine English teachers’ perceptions and concerns about the implementation of the2013 curriculum in Junior high school in Indonesia. This study reports findings from interpretive case study design in a private junior high school in Medan region, Indonesia with 2 teachers. Data were generated using questionnaires, focus group interview, classroom observation and documentation. The research focus was on how the English teachers have implemented the 2013 curriculum. The findings indicate that the implementation of the curriculum was still problematic due to the teachers’ lack of knowledge of the 2013 curriculum and the teachers’ pile of work. In addition, one of the teachers was still confused with the implementation of the 2013 curriculum, to work with teenagers’ students, overcrowded classrooms, learning environments, and insufficient teaching and learning materials and facilities. This study recommends that to improve the current situation and attain quality provision of junior high schools, teachers need to develop their professional knowledge through socialization and the in-service training. The government policy planners need to provide initial teacher education that suit junior high school contexts, professional development, and conducive teaching and learning environments with available resources for effective teaching and learning practices.

Abstract

The ability to develop, project-based e-modules for the Contextual Written Language Skills course in a learning context into another learning context is anessential ability for students based on project-based learning. However, the learning pattern used is innovative learning, which can improve students’ skills and thinking abilities. The ability of project-based e-modules for the English lecturers to adapt their knowledge and skills from project-based e-modules for the Contextual Written Language Skills course to another course has been studied. This research focused on the presentation of discussion material that is not accompanied by an assignment or project or the systematics of preparing teaching materials and e-modules using project-based learning for Contextual Written Language Skills. The research used in this study is the Research and Development (RnD) development model by adopting the model Borg and Gall, which consists of 6 phases: 1) Gathering data and Information, 2) Need analysis, and 3) Material Design. 4) Validating by experts, 5) Revising, and 6) Final Product. The results of this study are based on an analysis of the needs of students who experience limited digital learning resources related to the material in the Contextual Written Language Skills course. Therefore, researchers are interested in developing textbooks in the form of e-modules to meet the needs of students and improve their learning outcomes. E-modules developed were validated by experts. Material expert validation had an average score of 88,61%, which was classified as very good. Media expert validation obtained an average score of 87,75% which was classified as very good. This means that the developed e-module is valid to be used in the Contextual Written Language Skills course.

Abstract

As language usually shapes people’s socio-economics status, people has become opinionated that what education degree/level an individual has can be seen by the way they communicate. This paper explores whether it is also true for higher education people use less standardized language when speaking in daily life and if social media helps low-educated individuals to speak as formal as high-educated ones. This paper employed a mixed-method approach with 5 participants from the same level of education: undergraduate students. Findings indicate that indeed people with higher education level usually has distinctive style of communication compared to those with lower education yet it depends on the context of situation. In addition to the communication style, the proability of social media helping to form formal communication for lower educated individual is possible as they expose people to all kinds of information, including language. This research is expected to contribute to raising awareness about the relationship of education and communication style.
