Abstract

This study aims to improve the public speaking skills of sixth-grade students at SDN 2 Daleman through the utilization of YouTube as an audiovisual-based learning medium. Public speaking is a crucial component of oral communication competence that needs to be developed from an early age, as it influences students’ confidence, critical thinking, and ability to express ideas in public. Initial observations indicated that most students faced difficulties in structuring their speeches systematically, using proper pronunciation and intonation, and showing appropriate expression and vocal control during presentations. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach conducted in two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 17 sixth-grade students, consisting of 8 boys and 9 girls. Data were collected through observation, documentation, interviews, and speech performance tests. The success indicators were determined by the increase in the number of students who met the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) of 75 and improvements in specific aspects of public speaking, including expression, pronunciation, intonation, voice volume, and content structure. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ public speaking skills through the use of YouTube media. In the pre-cycle stage, only 7 out of 17 students (41%) achieved the MMC. After the first cycle of implementation, the number increased to 10 students (58%). By the second cycle, 15 students (88%) met or exceeded the target. In addition to the quantitative improvement, qualitative enhancements were observed in students’ delivery of speech elements.Learning improvement was also evident across multiple performance aspects, such as clarity of pronunciation, appropriate expression, dynamic intonation, mastery of content, and proper vocal projection. The effective use of YouTube, particularly through a modeling approach featuring high-achieving students as role models, proved to be a powerful motivator and conceptual clarifier. Moreover, it enabled students to engage in self-reflection by watching their own recorded speeches. Therefore, YouTube serves not only as a visual aid but also as a strategic tool to enhance oral communication skills in the context of 21st-century learning.

Abstract

A leader's speech in an international forum functions as a strategic rhetorical instrument to convey vision, foster solidarity, and assert diplomatic presence. This study analyzes the speech delivered by President Prabowo Subianto at the 2024 D-8 Summit, which centered on the call for unity among Muslim nations. Using a qualitative discourse analysis approach, the study applies Aristotelian rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, within a lexicogrammatical framework. The dataset comprised 37 clauses, examined through mood types, speech functions, and polarity. The findings reveal that declarative mood was dominant (62%), establishing ethos through the delivery of credible statements and objective facts. A Pathos was conveyed via both declarative and imperative moods, reflecting emotional intensity through critical remarks, expressions of solidarity, and direct appeals. Logos was constructed through the inclusion of statistical data and historical references, supporting argumentative coherence. The consistent use of inclusive pronouns such as "we" reinforced collective identity, while the interplay of positive and negative polarity created rhetorical tension that enhanced emotional engagement. This study demonstrates how grammatical choices underpin rhetorical strategies, offering insights into political communication. The findings have implications for diplomatic speechwriting and rhetorical pedagogy, especially in contexts emphasizing cross-national solidarity and advocacy.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum is a groundbreaking curriculum from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia that aims to further empower all educational units and teachers in developing the potential possessed by students in the current advanced era, which requires competent abilities and skills. The objectives of this research are (1) to describe the reflective teaching practices of the Merdeka Curriculum in English at NW Mataram Junior High School, grade 2, and (2) to explore the impact of teacher reflection on English teaching and learning in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. Using a qualitative case study approach where data is collected from several sources, with the data sources coming from the 8th-grade English teacher, the researcher then conducts direct observations, in-depth interviews with the teacher, and analyzes documents related to the teacher's activities on reflective teaching. This study involves a class and a teacher as participants. Based on the findings (1) English teachers previously used reflective practices to prepare and deliver English teaching to students by assessing previous achievements setting constructive criteria and modifying teaching methods for future success in teaching English. (2) Reflective teaching practices have a significant impact on English teaching and learning, as they can enhance teachers' competencies and teaching quality, optimize students' learning outcomes, and strengthen students' critical and collaborative thinking skills.

Abstract

The difficulty of understanding verb and noun reduplication in Indonesian and English without the aid of Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. The urgency of this research lies in the gap in computational approaches that are not yet adaptive to morphological and semantic differences between languages. The aim of this research is to analyse the role of NLP technology in identifying reduplication patterns and their implications for language learning. The research approach used a mixed methods approach. The sample size was 300 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of a bilingual Indonesian-English corpus. Analysis techniques used were descriptive statistics and ANOVA assisted by SPSS 29.0, thematic analysis, and evaluation of a BERT-based NLP model. The results show that NLP is able to recognize cross-language reduplication variations with a high level of reliability. Students demonstrated a good understanding of the form and function of reduplication and a positive attitude towards the use of NLP technology. The conclusion is that NLP is effective in capturing the semantic nuances of reduplication. Practical implications: these results support the development of bilingual curricula, digital learning media, and contextual NLP-based language analysis applications.
