Abstract

Sunda clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi Cuvier, 1823) is a predator that threatened by habitat fragmentation due to the conversion of forest into residential and agricultural areas. One of the habitats of sunda clouded leopard in Sumatra is in the Batutegi Protection Forest. This research aimed to identify the habitat functions of sunda clouded leopard and its characteristic. Data were collected by direct observation using vegetation plots, line transect, camera trapping, and indirect observation to determine signs of animal activities. Vegetation and canopy openness analysis was used to describe the habitat characteristic, while data of potential prey were analyzed using species diversity and abundance indices. The results show that hunting area for sunda clouded leopard was an area with dense canopy cover (64,67%). Resting area and cover area for sunda clouded leopard were areas with very dense canopy cover (78,64% and 73,43%). Potential prey diversity and abundance with higher rate found in lowland forest (H’=2,35), while the lower rate found in sub-montane forest (H’=1,81).

Abstract

Stress can be defined as psychological and physical tension caused by physical, emotional, social, economic, and occupational, events, or experiences that are difficult to manage or endure. Bird sounds can be a potential solution to reduce stress levels. This study aimed to analyze the effect of bird sounds as a stress restorative on Bogor Botanical Garden visitors. A survey of 100 visitors of Bogor Botanical Garden was conducted based on the Perceived Stress Scale and Perceived Restorativeness Soundscape Scale. Data on respondent characteristics were analyzed using descriptive analysis, the relationship between stress levels and perceived stress restorative effect of bird sound was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The analysis showed that 78% of respondents had moderate to high perceived stress levels and 98% of respondents rated the degree of restoration from bird sounds to be moderate to high. The correlation analysis revealed a negative relationship between the stress level and bird sounds' perceived restorative effect. The older the respondents and the more frequently they visited Bogor Botanical Garden, the higher the perceived stress restorative effect from bird sound.

Abstract

Stress is a global phenomenon that has become a part of everyday life. Stress can be triggered by the presence of stressors. In Indonesia, the prevalence of psychological stress keeps increasing. This study aims to analyze the perceived restoration effect of green open parks on the stress levels of Bogor Botanical Gardens visitors. A survey of 100 visitors of Bogor Botanical Garden was conducted based on the Perceived Stress Scale. Data on respondent characteristics and stress levels were analyzed using descriptive analysis, the visitor's characteristics that affected their stress levels were analyzed using stepwise linear regression and analysis of variance, and the effect of having a garden and the proximity to open green space on the visitor's stress levels were identified using analysis of variance. The respondents who felt low, medium, and high-stress levels, were 22%, 73%, and 5% respectively. The majority of the respondents perceived Bogor Botanical Garden as restorative. Factors that significantly affect the stress level of respondents are age and purpose of visit. The older the respondent, the lower their stress level tends to be. Visitors who visit for exercise/health activities have significantly lower stress levels than for other visits. In this study, no significant relationship was found between garden ownership and proximity to green parks on the stress level of the respondents.

Abstract

Technically, key indators of bird captive breeding successfullness are marked by successful of reproduction, low rate of mortality  and well growing and development offspring in captivity. There are many technical factors of captivity that are allegedly to be determinant of birds captive breeding successfulness. Based on these reason, the study  was aimed to: (1) analyize and synthesize the technical aspects of yellow-crested cockatoo captive breeding that are applied in several captivity sites, and (2) analyze the technical factors as determinant of the yellow-crested cockatoo captive breeding successfulness. The study was conducted in March-May 2015 in five bird captive breeding sites in Bogor, Bandung and Jakarta. Data was collected through field observations by following bird maintenance activities in captivity and interviews, then collected data were analyzed by qualitative descriptive. Technical factors determinant analysis was carried out using the PCA (Principle Component Analysis) method. The results showed that from the five captive breeding sites, two units (40%) were classified as successful birds captive breeding sites, two units (40%) were classified as unsuccessful namely successfully laying eggs but had not hatched, and one unit (20%) was unsuccessful captive breeding (unable to lay eggs). Technically, successful captivity of the yellow-crested cockatoo minimally is maintained in a square cage with at least 1.5 x 3 x 3 m3 size, equipped with enrichment in the form of palm trees, wood of bird perch, nesting box,  food and water container. Feed given in the form of grains (corn, beans, kuaci), fruits (bananas, papaya) and vegetables, as well as the additional food in the form of porridge. In general, captivity management that are applied at the sample site can be stated to be quite good and successful, marked by the success of bird breeding and no bird deaths were found. There are two determinant factors of the technical success of captivity that must receive attention, namely feed factors, health care factors and medical measures. Keywords captive breeding, determinant factors, reproduction and mortality,  succesfull technique, yellow-crested cockatoo

Abstract

The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus L.) known as both pest and predators; in the urban area, it is considered a pest because of its droppings, feathers, and nests around the house. Meanwhile, in rural areas, it is considered both pests and predators because their diets are small insects and small grains like a grain in the rice field. This study aimed to determine the daily consumption rate of sparrows on grain; their preferred food; identify the adaptability; and the role of sparrows in urban and rural areas. Feeding ability test using the no-choice baiting method. Food preference test using the choice baiting method. The adaptability and role of sparrow data are obtained through location determination and direct observation in the field. The results show that the consumption rate of individual sparrow is ten percent of body weight. The most preferred food for sparrow is yellow mealworm, followed by millet, cricket, foxtail millet, rice grain, and corn. The Eurasian tree sparrow is not considered a pest on rice fields. The presence of the sparrow in urban areas is less than in rural areas. Both in urban and rural areas, more sparrows were seen or found in the morning than in the afternoon. Sparrows can adapt well in rural and urban areas because the environment provides open area and house building. In urban areas, sparrow is considered urban pests; meanwhile in rural areas they potentially considered a pest on barley and millet, and predators on small insects.
