Abstract

This study aims to understand teenagers' interpersonal communication patterns through the use of memes on Discord, identify the motivations behind them, and their impact on social relationships. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data was collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis on a community of active teenagers on Discord. Informants were teenagers aged 15-19 years old who were active for at least the last three months. The results showed that memes became an effective communication tool to convey humor, symbols, and strengthen social relationships. Discord provides a flexible space to share memes as a creative medium that reflects teenagers' perspectives and experiences. The effectiveness of communication is influenced by content relevance, creativity, and cultural sensitivity. However, challenges such as lack of context understanding, fear of criticism, and content saturation also arise. Good moderation within the group is important to create a safe space that is balanced between freedom of expression and community norms.

Abstract

Social media has become one of the main channels for disseminating political information, particularly among young voters who are highly active online. The General Elections Commission (KPU) of South Sulawesi utilizes its official Instagram account, @kpusulsel, as a medium to provide election-related information and encourage political participation. This study aims to analyze the influence of KPU South Sulawesi's Instagram posts on voting interest among students of the Communication Studies Program at Fajar University. A quantitative approach with an explanatory method was applied, and data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 67 respondents using a purposive sampling technique. The analysis focused on aspects of message delivery, including the attractiveness of visuals, clarity of language, and relevance of information presented in the posts. The findings show that Instagram content from KPU South Sulawesi has a significant and positive impact on students’ voting interest. Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated a very strong relationship (r = 0.976), while simple linear regression confirmed that KPU’s Instagram posts significantly increase voting interest, as evidenced by a calculated t-value greater than the tabulated t-value. These results suggest that social media platforms such as Instagram are not only effective tools for political socialization but also function as strategic instruments for enhancing political literacy, shaping perceptions of elections, and fostering active participation among young voters. The study highlights the importance of optimizing digital communication strategies to strengthen democratic processes and build political awareness in higher education environments.

Abstract

This study aims to identify types of linguistic ambiguity in Ariana Grande’s songs using Stephen Ullmann’s framework and to interpret the multiple meanings created in the lyrics. Using a qualitative textual analysis, the research examines five songs Supernatural, No Tears Left to Cry, Break Free, Bloodline, and 7 Rings. The data consist of official lyrics obtained from AZLyrics and analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation stages. The findings show two types of ambiguity: lexical ambiguity, which is dominant through polysemy, metaphors, and unclear pronoun references, and grammatical ambiguity through structures such as double negatives. Phonetic ambiguity does not appear. The study concludes that ambiguity is intentionally used as an artistic strategy, enriching emotional depth and expanding interpretive possibilities for listeners.

Abstract

This study analyses the concept of power as portrayed by the main characters of Killers of the Flower Moon, focusing on how different types of power affect the dynamics of the story. Using French and Raven’s (1959) theory of power as an analytical framework, this study examines coercive power, referential power, and expert power as used by William Hale to manipulate and control the Osage people. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods, analyzing dialogue and scenes from the film script to identify patterns of power dynamics. The findings reveal that coercive power is used through intimidation, threats, and physical violence to enforce control, while referential power allows Hale to maintain his deceptive influence over the Osage people. In addition, expert power is abused by doctors and legal authorities to justify and cover up crimes against the Osage people. This analysis highlights the destructive effects of power when exploited for personal gain and shows how language and manipulation play a significant role in maintaining authority. Based on the results of the study, there are 30 total powers in the film, coercive power (10), referential power (10), and expert power (10). Ultimately, this study contributes to the understanding of power relations in media and literature, by emphasizing the relationship between social control, language, and oppression in historical narratives.
