Abstract

Green Pantomime Theater (GPT) is a tool for promoting children environmental awareness and activism. This paper provides insight into how environmental issues can be embedded in green performances and consequently offers a model of socio- environmental change. In Morocco, GPT performances aim to change children behavior, enhance their environmental awareness, and develop their abilities to act as protectors of the environment. The status of PGT upon children has considerably changed within the Moroccan theatre context. The ‘Creativity Association for the Development of Educational Work’, under Arabic name of  جمعية لتنمية العمل التربوي إبداعات  is a Moroccan non-governmental association that employs GPT to promote environmental awareness and activism. The study examines a 45 minutes show performed by ‘the Joker’ theatre group titled البيئةهجرة ‘Environment Migration’. Within the framework of ecocriticism (Bracke & Corporaal, 2010) and visual grammar (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), the present work attempts to explain how silence, gestures, and visuals mirror the themes of the show. The study argues that environmental themes adopted in the performance strongly point to the Anthropocene's responsibility in destroying nature. For example, scenes on pollution, deforestation, the killing of species, and unreported and unregulated fishing (UUF) show that man has been dramatically affecting the environment. To make of the show a success, participating actors have meticulously used signs and gestures to silently express their views about a highly sophisticated issue. They have made of this show a universal performance in that anyone anywhere can perceive. Eventually, GPTs are highly recommended to identify lines of confrontation that man has with nature. Also, GPTs are important in that they represent man’s practices through gestures and signs and may provide responses for inspiring socio- ecological change.

Abstract

This research critically analyzes 10 editorials written in French that the Algerian army magazine (El-Djeich) published from January 2021 to October 2021, a peak time for the army to reinforce its threatening discourse against Morocco (the classical enemy of Algeria). It attempts to explore how the editorials employ a conspiracy narrative to represent Morocco as a country that has been waging wars and threatening its stability. The editorials aim to construct an ‘outer enemy’ to shift the public opinion from political, social, and economic problems that the appointed political leadership fails to solve. More than that, the editorials try to reestablish the image of the army underestimated by the social protestation Hirak which claims a ‘civil and not a military state’. Since the 16th of February 2019, the Hirak has been claiming that the army should return to its barracks and take care of the security of the country's borders instead of interfering in social, political, and economic affairs. The theoretical framework of this study was based on van Dijk’s model (van Dijk, 1985, 1989, 1993, 1998a, 1998b, 2000, 2004, 2006) to treat the texts as a voice of the Algerian army that violently attacks Morocco, amidst high tensions between the two countries, accusing the kingdom of instrumentalizing ‘conspiracies’ and waging ‘cyber-attacks' against Algeria. Relying on critical discourse analysis (CDA), the many linguistic constructions identified in the editorials reflect that the stand of the army and the political leadership towards Morocco are unfounded and fallacious. For instance, the findings of this research identified a pattern of argumentation based on erroneous allegations that the magazine of the army attributed to Morocco. Devoid of any proofs, the editorials have portrayed Morocco as a ‘threat to the country’. As a matter of fact, the study assumes that the magazine of the army uses editorials to rally the population against an external enemy and to divert the attention of the Algerian population from real internal problems. Indeed, the challenge for the Algerian military leadership is to convince the Hirak partisans, who strongly denounce the interference of the army in Algerians life, that the national army is the only institution that can stop an external enemy (Morocco) which threatens their well-being than do internal economic, political and security challenges.

Abstract

Islam is the religion of peace and harmony as its name suggested by Allah. It is rooted in purity, submission, and obedience. Historically, modern researchers claim Islam is 1400 years old; the youngest religion in the world which was introduced by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 610 A.D. But Muslims believe that this is the oldest and first entered the religion of the world and stepped onto this world with Hadrat Adam (A.S) And Hadrat Hawa (A.S). Contrary to this, Islam has also seen many twists and turns due to its followers and critics. Its original teachings are somehow forgotten by Muslims and misconstrued by other religions. This religion of peace is frequently questioned on ‘peace’ and ‘tolerance’ and is always misunderstood and misinterpreted by the ‘west’, specifically. In recent times, Islam is commonly pigeonholed with ‘extremism’ and ‘terrorism’ and Muslims with ‘terrorists’ and extremists’; without feeling any need to find the truth. Although Islam is the center for spirituality and humanity in real, its general perception is the opposite to it. The purpose of this study is to find out the similarities and differences between the two big religions of the world (as portrayed in scholarly specific poetries) to provide some core similarities in philosophical teachings/understandings. This comparative study has been designed between the works of the two legendary figures of the Islamic & Christian world i.e., Maulana Rumi and Geoffrey Chaucer, respectively. Maulana Rumi is majorly known as a phenomenal Sufi poet/scholar of the 13th century and Chaucer is considered ‘the father of English literature’ and belongs from the 14th century. This qualitative comparison is embedded in the similarities in religion, tolerance, honesty, truth, love, and humanity. It suggests that both poets have used the concept of tolerance as a policy to discover the ‘self’, ‘spirit’, and ‘liberalism’. This study provides evidence based on Islam that peace and tolerance are the soul and blood of this religion. It is also a defense of the evidence that these renowned poets are far more inclusive than most early modern poets of toleration.

Abstract

: In pursuit of bolstering environmental consciousness, the integration of Eco-linguistic themes into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes emerges as a crucial pedagogical strategy. This study aims to explore the potential merits of embedding ESP within environmental education curricula, particularly in Higher Schools of Technology (HST), with a specific focus on augmenting students' comprehension of intricate ecological concepts and nurturing a new cadre of environmentally aware professionals. Given the imperative for effective interdisciplinary communication in tackling environmental issues, ESP, tailored to the language needs of environmental science, policy, and conservation, offers promise in furnishing students with the specialized language proficiency essential for precise communication within the field. The research endeavors to assess the extent to which ESP aids HST students in grasping complex ecological concepts that often necessitate technical terminology and nuanced language usage. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines qualitative scrutiny of curriculum design and instructional methodologies with quantitative evaluation of students' language proficiency and comprehension of ecological principles. Educational institutions integrating ESP into their environmental education programs will be chosen as case studies. Interviews with educators and students, coupled with language assessment data, will furnish insights into the efficacy of ESP in enhancing language skills and fostering deeper comprehension of environmental content. Anticipated outcomes encompass a deeper understanding of ESP's impact on students' language proficiency and ecological acumen, as well as the identification of effective strategies for integrating ESP into environmental education. This research seeks to offer guidance to educators and curriculum developers endeavoring to bolster students' language skills and environmental literacy. Ultimately, by elucidating the advantages of incorporating ESP, this study contributes to ongoing discussions on pedagogical approaches that bridge the chasm between language education and environmental sciences. By highlighting the benefits of ESP integration, this research holds implications for shaping the curricula of environmental education programs and nurturing a cohort of professionals adept at effective communication, collaboration, and addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our era.

Abstract

The emerging branch of linguistics known as ‘Ecolinguistics’ views language as an integral part of the ecological environment and aims to study the relationship between language and the environment. As an emerging discipline in linguistic research, ecolinguistics provides a new perspective on language research from an ecological point of view. The study of a language under the framework of ecolinguistics involves not only studying the language itself, but also the environment in which the language is located and the interrelationship between language and environment. The advantages of Hindi as the lingua franca in Bihar, one of the Indian states, have been highlighted, and people in many remote regions have switched to the powerful Hindi language, and many regional languages have become vulnerable. Bihar has been prone to multiple natural disasters which include flood, earthquake, drought, cyclonic storms, and lightening of high severity. For instance, 73.63% of the geographical area of North Bihar is prone to floods. Thus, these natural factors may wipe out a whole people leading to the creation of linguistic ecological crisis of their native languages. In addition to this, social factor also plays role wherein the spread and popularity of the Internet has strengthened the spread of Hindi as a common language in Bihar. Thus, the present paper studies the ecological languages of language vulnerability from the perspectives of ecolinguistics. The languages of Bihar such as ‘Angika’ and ‘Bajjika’ are facing the linguistic situation of vulnerability. Various factors lead to their present linguistic situation and therefore, the present paper attempts to study these languages from the ecological linguistic perspective. It also presents the strategies for preserving these ‘so-labelled’ vulnerable codes as the reduced linguistic diversity is as serious as the harm caused by reduced biodiversity.

Abstract

Most academic researchers argued that learning English necessitates a number of components to effectively enhance the learning process. The major components that are highly demanding are mainly motivation and attitude. This study aims to check upon the significant role of the previously mentioned components in learning English as a foreign language and to check whether motivation and attitude are highly required for an efficient learning process. For the data collection procedure, a google form questionnaire was designed and distributed to respondents through the social media applications, such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger too. The respondents of this study are Moroccan university students affiliated to Moulay Ismail University in Meknes in Morocco, more precisely the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences as well as the Faculty of Sciences in Meknes in Morocco. For the research outcomes of the study, respondents were aware about the requirement of enhancing their level in English. They held an encouraging attitude towards the language. They illustrated that they have become tolerant and open-minded in their process of learning. They also assumed that English is a global language and they are studying it for various reasons, such as passing exams successfully, delivering talks and publishing articles in internationally indexed journals, and settling in a foreign country whose English is the mother tongue of its native speakers. Consequently, they are adopting intrinsic/extrinsic and instrumental/integrative motivation clusters. Likewise, they argued that they ought to practice the language inside and outside the classroom setting to become fluent in English; otherwise, it will be hard for them to achieve an excellent level in the learning process. At last, it can be deduced that students’ motivation and positive attitude are tremendously relevant for an effective learning process of a foreign language.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of interactive learning media by focusing on online activities with synchronous and asynchronous models to improve the quality of English learning. The study provides some discussion about preparing an interactive online learning by deploying various types of activities which group into synchronous and asynchronous activities. The method used in the research is research and development method which follows ADDIE model. The data collected from English skill class which include Elementary Reading and Writing and Elementary Listening and Speaking. The result of the study shows effective model for developing interactive medias for teaching English skill. It is very important to design learning activities aligned with the learning outcomes and learning objectives. To create an effective online learning environment, teachers should consider about the interactivity of the learning activities and the mode of content delivery. Both synchronous and asynchronous activities have benefits and drawback. Hence to get a maximum benefit of online learning, teachers need to combine synchronous and asynchronous activities and design which activities should be delivered in each mode.

Abstract

The article focuses on speech production in relation to malocclusion. It investigates how malocclusion could affect sound production and articulating clearly. The article also discusses how orthodontists could fix malocclusion and improve the sound production. Speech production is a complicated process involving several speech organs, including the mouth cavity. Malocclusion can have an adverse effect on pronunciation, especially on specific speech sounds. It can also cause compensatory articulation problems, which can affect pronunciation further. Certain speech sounds, such as /s/, /z/, /t/, /d/, /l/, /r/, / θ /, and /t/, can be affected by malocclusion. Different types and levels of malocclusions may have different effects on pronunciation. It is necessary to speak with an orthodontist to determine the most appropriate therapy for malocclusion. Proper diagnosis and treatment can assist in reducing the impact on pronunciation. Additionally, speech and language therapy may help in the development of speech. The article concludes with an overview of the available treatments for speech production, the potential impacts of malocclusion can be minimized.

Abstract

The plurality of Indonesia with more than 600 ethnics is a great wealth but has not been adequately rewarded. Various political, legal, and socio-cultural events have resulted in the degradation of diversity from a colorful mosaic to a blur. This article analyzes the discourse of ‘return to nagari’ based on texts of national commitments and policies on decentralization, West Sumatra’s local policies on the lowest government ‘nagari’, and public responses on them. The methods had been used are literature study and field research, which are analyzed based on the technique of discourse analysis which included text, context, and social practice. The findings are the policy on decentralization is still inconsistent, and the construction of the regional government’s policy based on local culture has not been ideal and operational formulated yet. In fact, it is not easy to return to indigenous culture as roots the Beauty of Indonesia’s Multiculturalism. This finding reflects the critical implication of the discursive practice that shows the awareness of actor’s membership in their culture that leads them to make clear cultural-political attitudes in relation to the state. The position of their cultural traditions is threatened and our position is to mobilize them to revive, maintain, keep, consolidate and revitalize their cultural identity.

Abstract

This study looks at the connection between argumentative writing and speaking among sixth-semester EFL students at Moulay Ismail University in Morocco’s English Studies department. In order to achieve this objective, a total of 80 undergraduate students who were learning English as a foreign language (EFL) were selected as participants. Participants were then given both speaking and writing examinations to assess their argumentation skills in these two areas. Regression and correlation analyses were performed in SPSS on the study’s data. The findings show a substantial difference between speaking and writing in contentious discourse, in addition to a high positive association. Argumentative speaking was statistically proven to predict a great proportion of argumentative writing. The findings suggest integrating argumentative speaking and writing in teaching and assessment practices in a balanced way. The two skills can be taught along with each other to facilitate correspondences between the two modalities in argumentative genre. As the study concludes, it offers valuable insights into the implications of these findings, highlights the research limitations encountered during the research process, and provides recommendations for future endeavors in the realm of language pedagogy and assessment. This study not only contributes to our understanding of the interplay between argumentative writing and speaking but also paves the way for more comprehensive and integrated language instruction practices in EFL contexts.
