Abstract

Abstract This descriptive study aims at: (1) finding out and describe the phonological, lexical, and syntactic forms of English language learners’ inter language, and (2) finding out whether there are any differences in the inter language of the learners of different grades. The subjects of this research were 24 learners of the first, second, and third grade of an Islamic boarding school in Tasikmalaya. The data were collected from students’ conversations, interviews, and reading aloud. The data were recorded and transcribed. Then, the data were filtered by using Corder’s procedure. The results of the research reveal the existence of the following aspects in the learners’ inter language: (1) phonological transfers, (2) lexical transfers, (3) syntactic transfers, (4) phonological overgeneralizations, (5) lexical overgeneralizations, and (6) syntactic overgeneralizations. This research also found out some differences in the inter language of the students of different grades. Abstract

This study aims at investigating gender differences in written texts using Halliday’s framework about the functions of language. Halliday claimed that females’ writing style is, what he described as, ‘involved’ while males’ writing style is more ‘informative’. The results of the study do not confirm Halliday’s assumptions about gender differences in writing. No significant differences were found between males and females in the frequencies of the use of nouns, prepositions, numerals and modifiers. The only significant difference that was found is the use of pronouns, which is not enough to account for the assumptions. This paper also aims to investigate the differences between Arabic and English in the average sentence length, lexical density, and readability. To measure readability, the Gunning-Fog index formula was used. The results show that there was no significant difference between Arabic and English in the average sentence length, but there were significant differences in lexical density and readability.

Abstract

Abstract

The current study aims at analysing phonological production of Sundanese beginner EFL learners in an elementary school in West Java. This study analyses both the production of vowels and consonants that are particularly present in English language but are not in the learners’ L1 i.e., Sundanese. Qualitative approach was used in the study. Participants were asked to read two English short stories titled “A Good Boy” and “A Greedy Mouse” while being recorded. Their recording was then transcribed using phonetic transcription. The learners’ phonological productions were then classified using the chart from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The study shows that the Sundanese EFL learners’ phonological production is heavily influenced by their first language.  There are several common mistakes found in the learners’ production of vowels, such as [a] ↔ [Ʌ], [e], [eə], [u:], [ɔ] 2. [ə] ↔ [e], [u], [Ʌ], [ei], [a], [aʊ], [ʊə] 3. [ʊ] ↔[u], [ɔ] 4. [i:] ↔ [I], [e], [ə] 5. [з]→[ei], [e], [ə] 6. [əʊ]→[ə], [ɔ], [ɔi], [u], [з] 7. [æ]→[e], [ei], [a], [ɔ], [i:], [Ʌ] 8. [aʊ]→[u], [a], [ɔ], [ə] 9. [ɒ]→[ə], [a], [ɔ], [e]. MIn the production of consonants, the common mistakes are: 1. [ð] ↔ [d], [h], [t], [ʤ], [ʧ] 2. [ʃ] ↔ [s], [ʧ] 3. [v], [f] →[p] 3. [ʤ]→[k], [ʧ], [g], [r] 4. [ŋ]→[n], [g], [s] 5. [k]→[ʧ], [ŋ] 6. [Ɵ]→[d], [t] 7. [d]→[h], [t], [n], [j], [l] 8. [ʧ]→[t], [ʃ] 9. [j]↔[r] 10. [l]↔[d] 10. [w]→[s], [j] 11. [n]↔[d] 12. [t]→[n], [h]. The results confirm several previous studies which consequently suggests that these learners need specific approach in EFL learning if their target is to be as close as possible to the standard pronunciation of English.

Abstract

This research aims at: (1) exploring classroom management strategies used by English teachers in inclusive elementary school in Banyumas regency, (2) exploring English teachers’ reasons in using the strategies in their inclusive classes, (3) exploring how English teachers accommodate various needs of students with special needs in the classroom. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The primary data was gathered through classroom observation while secondary data was collected through interviews. This research was done in two inclusive elementary schools in Banyumas regency. This study shows that English teachers in the school have good understanding on classroom management. However, the practice in the classroom indicates that there are still rooms for improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of team-based learning practice in the Teaching Campus program on the participating students' self-efficacy and the school mentor teachers' professionalism. A mixed methods approach was employed in this research. A total of 44 students (comprising 22 students who participated in the Teaching Campus program and 22 students who did not take the program) and seven teachers in partner schools were involved in the study. A questionnaire survey to assess students self-efficacy was administered. Interviews with teachers were also conducted to evaluate how much the program affected their professionalism during the activity. The responses obtained from questionnaires were analyzed using the inferential statistical tool of T-test, whereas the qualitative data elicited from interviews were analyzed using a thematic procedure. The ex-post facto design comparing self-efficacy of the two groups has shown that there is a significant difference, where the students who took part in the Teaching Campus program are  superior over those who did not. In addition, the teachers who co-worked with the students in their schools have stated that they benefited from the scheme. These results have strong implications for the 'Freedom to Learn - Freedom Campus' policy in current Indonesia's higher education system, more specifically the 'Teaching Campus' program, which includes team-based learning as an essential component. Betterment in its implementation is encouraged to make, according to results of this study.

Abstract

This research falls within the area of language learning strategies (LLS) in English as a foreign language (EFL).  Although the impact of LLS on vocabulary learning has attracted ample of studies in the field on teaching English as a second or foreign language. However, teachers and learners’ views of LLS have not been investigated enough. To that end, this research sheds light on the adopted approaches while teaching these strategies by EFL teachers at the Higher Language Institute. It investigates whether these strategies are taught implicitly, explicitly or both. To conduct this study, the researcher applied two questionnaires: the questionnaires are used to evaluate the used memory and cognitive strategies by teachers and intermediate learners at the HLI. These instruments are applied on the sample that includes 36 intermediate and 30 EFL teachers at the HLI. The data obtained was dealt with descriptively and analytically. The findings show that the majority of teachers tend to train students to use memory and cognitive strategies implicitly. In addition, it was noticed that both teachers and learners use the same set of strategies which implies that teaching approaches has a direct impact on the used strategies by the learners.

Abstract

The volume provides a comprehensive and multidimensional discussion of multilingualism from a broader framework i.e. sociolinguistic perspective, to a more individual i.e. psycholinguistic perspective, and eventually to a more detailed point of view i.e. neurolinguistics perspective. The chapters in the volume is categorized thematically into four separate parts which make it easier for readers to navigate through the general idea of the volume. The recent and relevant issues in the volume makes it a valuable reading for practitioners and especially researchers wanting to reflect on the practices of multilingualism and use it as a reference for future studies. This volume is also an essential resource for graduate students interested in the field. Nevertheless, another volume following the current one is something to look forward to in order to fill the gaps in terms of updates on the practices of multilingualism especially in the countries or regions not included in this volume. At the moment, on the whole, this volume is a rich and comprehensive resource especially for those interested in the topic of multilingualism.

Abstract

Verbal fluency (VF) task is a tool that has been utilized in bilingual studies to measure executive performance of bilingual individuals. While many of the previous studies compared bilingual speakers’ performance in VF to their monolingual counterparts, this descriptive study compares exclusively the cross-linguistic VF performance of Indonesian bilinguals in their first (L1), second (L2), and third language (L3). The aim of this study was to see whether or not there were any differences in the result of their performance in each of their languages. The participants of the current study were 25 non-native bilingual university students in Indonesia who speak English in at least intermediate level. Javanese is the L1 of the participants. Indonesian is their L2, whereas English is their L3. In the VF task, the participants were requested to generate, in a rapid fashion, semantic category and phonemic category in their L1, L2, and L3. The results showed that the participants’ VF performance in English and standard Indonesian were significantly higher (p < .05) than Javanese. However, no significant difference was indicated when comparing the semantic category and phonemic category in all three languages. The findings of this study will be used as a basis for a forthcoming study on VF performance of Indonesian bilinguals.

Abstract

Reading as one of the skills constructing English competency has a special portion in the curriculum of English studies programs at higher education institutions. The prevalent purpose of reading classes is to enable students to grasp knowledge from any type of text written in English. This skill could be achieved through learning a series of techniques and strategies in reading, and most importantly extensive reading activities. However, the fact that the class weights as much as 2 credits (SKS) does not give sufficient training time to achieve the maximum target. Hence, an out-of-class activity should be imposed, such as reading portfolio. This paper seeks to address the criteria of a good reading portfolio, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of this supplementary reading activity given to the students of the English Education program of IAIN Purwokerto. The data are collected through documenting the findings of previous researches on the criteria of a good reading portfolio, interviewing student-sample, and observing the process of reading portfolio given to the students of IAIN Purwokerto. The results showed that a reading portfolio should contain the purpose of the course, the text liked and picked by the students, clear scoring criteria, and continuous evaluation. The strengths of reading portfolio are evoking students’ interest for reading, instilling reading habit, and promoting learning autonomy and self-evaluation, the weaknesses are lack of resources, complex vocabulary and structure, and less motivation.
