Abstract

This service program has two basic objectives. The first objective is to disseminate the results of ongoing research that has been carried out at partner Islamic boarding schools from 2014 to 2020 regarding the development of the English language of students. Overall, the findings of studies that have been carried out show that learners make almost all progress in the first six months and then they tend to be stable and stagnant in the forms and expressions of the English they use, which can be considered as a fossilized system that is the hallmark of pidginization. During their interactions, the non-target-like (NTL) output they produce is rarely corrected, perhaps because the learner does not know that the forms are not like the target language. It is also clear that students in pesantren have only limited exposure to input from authentic L2 or from more proficient people because the input they receive is mostly from their peers. In addition, the types of instruction they receive from their teachers are generally lexical based. These factors can cause the development of learners to stagnate. The very extensive role of peer interaction has also led to the process of pidginization or fossilization of students' English. The results of this continuous research become the basis for evaluating the English language learning program at partner pesantren which has been running for 30 years without any significant changes in program design. The second objective is to plan new English learning programs and teaching materials based on the research results.

Abstract

The current study aims at investigating the development of Indonesian EFL learners' pronunciation in terms of diphthong. In this study learners' pronunciation were observed over a period of six months to see how they develop. Moreover, the influence of their linguistic background on the pronunciation development was also measured namely age of acquisition, native language, level of English accent and the extend of English exposure. The data of this study was collected using pronunciation tests and the Language History Questionnaire (LHQ). The participants involved in this research were 25 university English students who were taking Phonetics course. The collected data was then analyzed using SPSS. The analysis techniques of this study were descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The study found that the learners' diphthong pronunciation did not develop significantly. Moreover, it even tends to have downward trend. Finally, according to the regression analysis, the aspect of learners' linguistic background that affected the most on their pronunciation development was their exposure to English.

Abstract

English courses are part of non-formal education conducted outside formal education, and the curriculum and methodology can be adjusted. This research investigates what strategies teachers use and what challenges teachers face when teaching English in English courses. This qualitative research involved two teachers from two different English courses. This research uses in-depth interviews and thematic analysis to collect data. The research found that the challenges faced when teaching English in non-formal education were student diversity, student mood, and accommodating students' needs. Then, the strategies teachers use during the learning process are observation, personal approaches to students, simplifying teaching materials, establishing prior agreements, and creating lesson plans. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into effective teaching strategies and identifying key challenges in English course settings.

Abstract

Technological advancements have had a profound impact on the education sector around the globe including in Thailand and other developing countries.  as in many other developing countries, there are major challenges in adapting with the rapid development of technology. The school where the community service was held also faced similar issues. With an innovative approach through assessment training using technology, this community engagement activity is expected to be a positive step towards educational transformation, particularly in the southern part of Thailand. With the active involvement of teachers as well as full support from related parties, we can create a learning environment that is more dynamic, relevant, and globally competitive. A pre-test and a post-test were conducted at the beginning and the end of the training to measure teachers’ understanding in implementing digital assessment strategies. By equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills to implement digital assessment strategies, the training has had a measurable impact on professional development and instructional practices. In addition, the training provide access to further consultation or guidance, participants can feel supported and more confident in applying their learning in the classroom. The results of the pre- and post-training survey demonstrated a substantial improvement, averaging 51.3% increase across all survey items. This indicates the positive impact of the training in enhancing teachers' competencies in integrating technology into their assessment practices.  Moving forward, schools in rural Thailand can apply the lessons learned from this workshop to enhance their own educational outcomes. Keywords: teacher training; digital assessment strategies; southern Thailand Abstrak: Dalam era globalisasi yang semakin cepat, pendidikan adalah salah satu aspek yang paling terpengaruh oleh perkembangan teknologi. Abstract

This study investigates the experiences of Indonesian pre-service teachers majoring in English education who participated in the SEA Teacher program, specifically focusing on those assigned to teach English in the Philippines. The primary objective was to identify the challenges these Indonesian SEA Teacher awardees encountered and the strategies they employed to mitigate these challenges, considering the differing statuses of English in Indonesia (as an EFL context) and the Philippines (as an ESL context). The research utilized a g inquiry approach, complemented by semi-structured interviews, to gather qualitative data. The participants comprised four pre-service teachers who successfully completed the SEA Teacher international teaching practice program in 2023, which spanned one month. The findings reveal several challenges faced by the participants, including issues related to self-confidence, language barriers, the educational system, and the availability of facilities. The study underscores the importance of thorough preparation, adaptability, and mentor support in overcoming these obstacles and enhancing teaching practices.

Abstract

The development of speaking fluency is a critical aspect of English language learning, particularly for non-native speakers. This study investigates the progress of university English learners in improving their speaking fluency, focusing on two key measures: the length of silent pauses and the use of pause fillers. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a pre-experimental design with 61 second-year students from two private universities, one in Indonesia and one in Uzbekistan. These students were enrolled in a speaking course at their respective universities, and the study served as an evaluative measure for the course. Data were collected through speaking tasks administered at the beginning and end of the course, where students delivered five-minute monologues on topics related to professional communication, specifically the creation of a startup company. The findings revealed a significant reduction in silent pauses, indicating an improvement in fluency, while the use of pause fillers showed minimal change.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of team-based learning practice in the Teaching Campus program on the participating students' self-efficacy and the school mentor teachers' professionalism. A mixed methods approach was employed in this research. A total of 44 students (comprising 22 students who participated in the Teaching Campus program and 22 students who did not take the program) and seven teachers in partner schools were involved in the study. A questionnaire survey to assess students self-efficacy was administered. Interviews with teachers were also conducted to evaluate how much the program affected their professionalism during the activity. The responses obtained from questionnaires were analyzed using the inferential statistical tool of T-test, whereas the qualitative data elicited from interviews were analyzed using a thematic procedure. The ex-post facto design comparing self-efficacy of the two groups has shown that there is a significant difference, where the students who took part in the Teaching Campus program are  superior over those who did not. In addition, the teachers who co-worked with the students in their schools have stated that they benefited from the scheme. These results have strong implications for the 'Freedom to Learn - Freedom Campus' policy in current Indonesia's higher education system, more specifically the 'Teaching Campus' program, which includes team-based learning as an essential component. Betterment in its implementation is encouraged to make, according to results of this study.
