Abstract

Background: An obstacle in forensic odontology is an incomplete body caused by post-mortem damage. The problem can be solved by using lateral cephalometric radiographs for victim identification. Sex determination can be performed on the maxillary sinus, which is the largest among the paranasal sinuses. Purpose: This study aims to analyse the maxillary sinuses’ width and height on lateral cephalometric radiographs among male and female subjects. Methods: The study samples were 60 lateral cephalometric radiographs (30 males and 30 females) between the ages of 20 and 40, with complete permanent dentition (or third molar absence). The height and the width of maxillary sinus measurement were performed using measurement tools of EzDent-i Vatech Software. Results: The average width of the maxillary sinus on males was 40.60 ± 1.56 mm, and the height was 35.02 ± 2.09 mm, while the width and the height on females were 36.93 ± 1.30 mm and 29.72 ± 1.76 mm, respectively. The independent t-test reveals a significant difference (p<0.05) between males and females, both in the maxillary sinus’s width and height on the lateral cephalometric radiograph. Conclusion: The maxillary sinus in males is larger than in females, it opening up possibilities for disaster victim identification.

Abstract

Objectives: Panoramic radiography exposure causes DNA damage and micronucleus formation. The gingival mucosa and buccal mucosa were used to identify the number of micronucleus due to radiation exposure because they have a high prevalence of oral cancer in Southeast Asia. This research is aimed to determine the difference between micronucleus formation at the buccal mucosa and the gingival mucosa after exposed by conventional panoramic radiography in the Dentomaxillofacial Radiology Installation of Prof. Soedomo dental hospital, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Material and Methods: Samples were obtained by rolling the cervical brush against the buccal and gingival mucosa at 10 days after radiation exposure. Samples were stained using the Feulgen-Rossenbeck method and analyzed under binuclear light microscope with a 400x magnification. Results: Analysis of independent T tests showed that there was a significant difference (p<0,05) in the increasing of micronucleus formation between the buccal mucosa and the gingival mucosa. The average difference in the number of micronucleus were 5,5/1000 cells. Conclusion: There were differences in the increasing of micronucleus between the buccal mucosa and the gingival mucosa due to exposure of conventional panoramic radiography. The buccal mucosa had higher increase than the gingival mucosa.

Abstract

Objectives: This review article is aimed to determine the accuracy of extraoral periapical radiography as a determinant of the working length in endodontic treatment and the advantages and disadvantages of this technique. Review: Endodontic treatment is a dental treatment for damages reaching the pulp which aims to maintain the tooth. One way to succeed in endodontic treatment is to determine an accurate working length. The working length can be determined by intraoral periapical radiography examination but some people are sensitive to intraoral film placement. The placement of film on periapical radiography extraorally is needed. Conclusion: The study showed that the extraoral periapical radiography had more than 75% accuracy in determining the working length depending on angulation used. This review concludes that extraoral periapical radiography can be used in patients who can not tolerate to intraoral film placement with an accuracy that is not significantly different from that of the intraoral periapical radiography but is not meant to be replaced intraoral periapical radiography.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Estimating age and sex through several radiographic methods have a significant role in the victim identification process. The mandibular ramus is thought to have a high degree of dimorphism and a close relationship with chronological age, which can be determined by ramus notch depth (RND). This study aimed to analyze the differences in RND between males and females and the correlation between age and RND based on panoramic radiographs. Methods: The type of study is an observational analytic cross-sectional study. The study sample comprised 70 radiographs (35 males and 35 females) aged 19-60 years with complete mandibular permanent dentition, including third molars. The samples were obtained from the database of the Dentomaxillofacial Radiology Installation of RSGM UGM Prof. Soedomo. Analysis of the radiograph was carried out by measuring the RND using EzDent-I Vatech Software with a scale of ratio 1:1. Results: The mean RND value was 2.31 ± 7.95 mm and 1.94 ± 4.93 mm in the male and female groups, respectively. Independent T-test results showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) in RND between the male and female groups. Pearson’s correlation test result did not find any correlation between age and RND in the male dan female group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: RND in males is higher than in females, and there is no correlation between age and RND in both sex groups. Keywords: MISS; trauma of mandible; half face helmet; traffic accidents

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: One of the sectors that has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic is dentistry. There is a significant chance that an intraoral radiographic examination will facilitate the spread of the COVID-19. One of the radiographers' efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus is to carry out infection control. The application of infection control performed by radiographers is influenced by many factors. This study aimed to analyze differences in the application of infection control in intraoral radiographic examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic in various healthcare facilities. Methods: This study conducted was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted using a questionnaire consisting of 13 statement items. Thirty intraoral dental radiographers who were employed in radiology departments at various healthcare facilities participated in the study as respondents. The research data that had been collected was then tested using the One Way Anova test to find out the differences in the application of infection control by radiographers from each healthcare facility. Results: The results of the study indicated that the significance value was 0.314 (p>0.05), which means that there was no significant difference in the score category for each healthcare facility. The lack of complete respondents from all different kinds of existing healthcare facilities was still a weakness of this study. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no discernible difference in how each healthcare facility implemented infection control during intraoral radiographic examinations.KeywordCOVID-19, healthcare facilities, infection control, intraoral radiographs, radiographers

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: β-carotene as a lipid-soluble antioxidant substance, expected to prevents the oxidative reaction and to improve the junctional communication detected by Cx-43. Micronucleus is known as one of the early markers of DNA damage which might be related to carcinogenesis mechanism that increased by panoramic radiography radiation exposure. The objective of this research was to analyse the effect of the β-carotene gingival mucoadhesive patch on Cx-43 expression and 8-oxo-dG to prevent micronucleus formation at the gingival mucosa of New Zealand rabbit due to panoramic radiography radiation exposure. Methods: β-carotene gingival mucoadhesive patch was applied to gingival mucosa of the experimental rabbits. In Group I, the rabbits without patch was a control group. Group II has applied the patch before radiography exposures, Group III during the radiography exposures, and Group IV after radiography exposures. Micronucleus samples were taken from the rabbit’s swabbed gingival mucosa, then stained using modified Feulgen-Rossenbeck. The 8-oxo-dG and Cx-43 expressions were detected using immunohistochemistry technique. The results were then analysed using two-way ANOVA. Results: The increasing number of micronucleus in Group I had a different mean (p < 0.05) with Group III and IV. The expression of 8-oxo-dG and Cx-43 had significant differences (p < 0.05) between Group I and III. This results indicated that β-carotene gingival mucoadhesive patch prevents the increasing number of micronucleus especially when it applied before and during panoramic radiography radiation exposure by the increasing Cx-43 and decreasing 8-oxo-dG expression. Conclusion: The β-carotene gingival mucoadhesive patch can be utilised to prevent the panoramic radiography radiation exposure’s effect. Keywords: β-carotene, gingival-mucoadhesive patch, micronucleus, radiation exposure

Abstract

Introduction: Panoramic radiograph is an image used by the dentist to maintain diagnosis in dentistry, for example, to evaluate teeth condition in mixed dentition period. There are two panoramic radiography techniques, which are conventional and digital (direct and indirect) method. This study was aimed to analyse the differences of panoramic radiograph image quality between the conventional and digital indirect method on mixed dentition radiograph. Methods: Thirty samples of conventional and indirect digital panoramic radiograph were randomly taken from the database according to inclusion criteria. The image quality of conventional radiograph was manually assessed by using illuminator box, while indirect digital radiographs was assessed directly using DBS Win 5.7.0 software (Durr Dental, Germany). The radiographs were divided into six zones: teeth area, nasal and sinus, mandible, TMJ, ramus-spine, and hyoid bone. The image quality assessment was performed in each area based on three criteria: anatomical coverage, density and contrast, and anatomical structure. Results: The Cronbach's Alpha Intra-Class Correlation (ICC) inter and intraobserver agreement test of conventional and digital indirect methods on the aspect of anatomical, density and contrast coverage, and anatomic structure showed an excellent agreement. The independent sample t-test result showed significant difference (p < 0.05) between the conventional and indirect digital method in density and contrast as well as anatomical structure aspects, but not significantly different (p > 0.05) in the anatomical coverage aspect. Conclusion: Indirect digital panoramic radiograph shows better image quality as compared to conventional radiograph, especially in the anatomical structure aspect, density and contrast. There is no difference in the anatomical coverage aspect between conventional and indirect digital panoramic radiograph.
