Abstract

Introduction: Sepsis is presented as acomplex and multifactorial syndrome where the morbidity and mortality rates still high around the world. Strong evidencewith regard to early predictive factors for mortality and morbidity is rare to be provided. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse the prominent predictors from the values of laboratory findings among patients with sepsis. Method and Material: The study was aan analytic observational study with a case-control approach. The data were extracted from patients's medical records between 2014 and 2015. This study involved 50 septic patients admitted to Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine serum, albumin, leukocytes count, haemoglobin, hematocrite, platelets, sodium, potassium, chloride, prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were collected from blood samples. Logistic regression was used to estimate sepsis related mortalities frequencies and the relationship between laboratory findings and under 28-days mortality. Result and Discussion: From 50 patients, 22 patients were died (44%). The regression model was intially conducted using all three biomarkers as covariates, then using backward elimination, the covariate with the highest p-value was eliminated. The process was repeated until covariates with statistically significant remained. Multivariate analysis showed that albumin, leukocytes count, and prothrombin time (PT) were the findings associated with high mortality. The independent predictors of mortality identified by further multivariate regression analysis were taken into account as a lower than 3.5 g/dL of albumin, above12.000/µL of leukocytes count, and prolonged more than 14 seconds of prothrombin time; with p value <0,05 respectively (0.029; 0.049; 0.027). Conclusion: Notably, low albumin level, elevated levels of leukocytes, and prolonged prothrombin time were clinically considered as independent predictors of mortality among adult patients with sepsis.

Abstract

Universities participate in realizing Indonesia's vision 2045 “The Indonesians who are excellent, civilized, and mastering science technology, to bring Indonesia as the center of science technology development in the Asia and the world”. It would need intense effort and synergy, considering the science literacy of Indonesian students was ranked the 10th lowest out of 79 countries in 2018. The innovation capacity is ranked 74 out of 141 countries.  Research is an essential activity, encouraging the development of science technology. Research competency should be honed by high school students as part of scientific inquiry. Therefore, this community service was carried out in collaboration with FORISMA FK UNAIR, aimed to increase students’ understanding of the urgency, stages, and procedures of research as well as increase interest in research activities. It was also intended to develop their skills to compile and present research proposals. The partner was Raudlatul Jannah High School Sidoarjo. It was implemented through workshops, coaching, and presentations followed by the teachers and 11th-grade students.  The whole activity successfully improved students' knowledge. Increased knowledge score was obtained in 83% of participants. The pre-test evaluation showed 88% of participants had poor knowledge, whilst post-test evaluations were predominantly good. This community service increased students’ interest in research and changed their perceptions of research’s importance. This improved students' capability to identify research problems, search and compile scientific references as a basis for building hypotheses and conceptual frameworks, and determine research methods. The four groups of students were able to produce research proposals of sufficient quality and were able to present and discuss them in the forum. This community service was perceived to help the school in the implementation of curriculum, especially in science literacy. The school was committed to deepening students' knowledge and skills in the field of scientific research by providing research project modules. This community service is part of the contribution of higher education to the achievement of the vision of Indonesia 2045. This can be a model of scientific inquiry learning in secondary education, thus it is necessary to be implemented in other high schools.

Abstract

Morbidity and mortality due to Covid-19 tend to be milder in adolescents. Nevertheless, their perception, attitude, and behavior towards Covid-19 deserve attention since they would also contribute to the success of Covid-19 control. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the perceived severity, susceptibility, attitudes, and behavior toward Covid-19 among high school students. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in five schools in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. Questionnaires were given online to teachers who then forwarded them to high school students. Data were taken from July to October 2021. Attitude and behavior were examined using the scoring previously tested. The data were then analyzed using Mann-Whitney U and Spearman's correlation tests. The significance level was set at p<0.05. More than 50% of students had good preventive behavior, the most frequent one was wearing masks (87.3%), followed by washing hands (73%). The behavior was correlated with their attitude (r= 0.285, p=0.000). Fifty-three percent of the respondents felt they would experience mild symptoms if they were infected with Covid-19. Most students perceived that they were susceptible to getting infected with Covid-19. Significant results were obtained using the Mann-Whitney test on gender toward attitudes and behavior (p<0.05). There were significant correlations between the mother's educational level (r=0.164, p=0.001) and the father's educational levels (r=0.120, p=0.013) with attitude toward Covid-19 control policies. Female students in Surabaya and Sidoarjo have better behavior in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. Parents' educational level plays a role in influencing the student's attitude toward Covid-19 control.

Abstract

Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE) is one of the major autoimmune diseases that can cause severe damage to the tissues and organs in the body and lead to high mortality rates. The clinical manifestations are characterized by the production of autoantibody immunoglobulin G (Ig G) that fights component of the nucleus. The present scientific information issues about peculiar property of Tridax procumbens as immunosuppressant by inhibiting enzyme of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) on surface of B cells. This study approved effect of the extract of Tridax procumbens on human lymphocytes cells line with SLE disease. The aim of this study was to approve effect of extract of Tridax procumbens in suppressing Ig G concentration from patient with stable SLE and patient with active SLE in vitro. This study was an in vitro experimental design on lymphocytes cell line that was isolated from whole blood patient with stable SLE and active SLE. Lymphocyte cells from healthy volunteer were also collected as control. American Rheumatism Association Diagnostic was used for inclusion criteria.Tridax procumbens was extracted with maceration method in solution of ethyl acetate. The extract was divided in several doses as immunosuppressant i.e.1000; 250; 62.5; 31.25; 15.13; and 3.91 µg/mL. Supernatant of the cultured cells was collected and examined for measuring Ig G concentration as secretion from activated B cells by ELISA. Ethical clearance had been completed before this study started. The extract of Tridax procumbens significantly suppressed Ig G secretion in patient with stable SLE at dose over 62.5 µg/mL, but Ig G concentration in patient with active SLE was significantly increased when compared with control. Furthermore from the analysis, effect of the Tridax procumbens extract on Ig G concentration followed dose dependent response. In in-vitro study, the extract of Tridax procumbens could significantly suppress Ig G secretion in healthy volunteer and patient with stable SLE. Otherwise, the extract does not suggest for patient with active SLE and it needs caution in use and investigation in-depth. Keywords: SLE, Tridax procumbens, immunoglobulin G ABSTRAK Penyakit Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE) merupakan salah satu penyakit autoimun yang sering menyebabkan kerusakan jaringan dan organ sehingga angka kematiannya tinggi. Keywords: SLE, Tridax procumbens, imunoglobulin G

Abstract

The increasing rate of Candida resistance against pharmacological drugs has become a particular focus in the medical world, especially considering the high mortality rate due to systemic infections caused by Candida. It is evident that the urgency of developing alternative medicines applies for potential natural ingredients like propolis. This literature review aims to discuss the antifungal effectiveness of propolis against C. albicans which is described by the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MFC (minimum fungicidal concentration) values from the test results. The search for relevant literature was conducted using the Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases using the keywords "Propolis AND MIC AND MFC AND Candida albicans". There were nine articles that had been adjusted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria based on the PICOS Framework. The propolis in the article uses various solvents with various extraction methods, and various antifungal tests are carried out on standardized and clinical isolates of C. albicans. All the reviewed articles consistently support the finding that propolis has a strong ability to inhibit the growth and kill the pathogenic fungus C. albicans. The lowest MIC value found was 0.06 μg/mL, and the MFC value was 0.121 μg/mL. Propolis has potential as an ingredient that can be further developed as a non-pharmacological therapy for pathogenic fungal infections.

Abstract

The phenomenon of bullying is a serious problem for child development in Indonesia. Bullying cases in Indonesia are ranked fifth in Indonesia world in bullying incidents (Jayani, 2019). Violence against students at school is a topic of discussion mainstream in the media. The incidence of bullying is 10-60% of children who receive ridicule, ridicule, expulsion, kicking or pushing at least once a week. Cases of bullying in Children can occur anywhere, anytime and by anyone. This makes this case still high incidence rate (Komisi Perlindungan Anak Indonesia, 2020). If this bullying incident continues for a long time, it will have an impact on the victim of bullying, both physically, psychologically and socially. The bullying case at Ketabang Seruni Elementary School Surabaya is of particular concern to the school principal. During break time, students are often heard making fun of each other, and there are friends who are alone because they are ostracized. As a leading public school in the city of Surabaya, hopes that its students can be a good for other schools by implementing free bullying at schools. The solution offered to solve this problem is to provide education to students at Ketabang Seruni Elementary School Surabaya by providing an explanation first about the purpose of the activity, then giving a questionnaire to the students about various things related to the meaning of bullying, types of bullying, causes of bullying, characteristics of perpetrators and victims of bullying, bad impacts of bullying, prevention of bullying, efforts to handle bullying prevention. Education is provided by providing materials using powerpoint media, leaflets and posters which are pasted on the school walls as a means of reminder for the entire community at school, including students, teachers, employees and parents. The result of this activity is that there is an increase in students' understanding of bullying and good practices are obtained by changing the way students socialize to be better and more polite.
