Abstract

Eco-translatology, an emerging field focusing on ecological-themed texts and sustainable translation practices, was explored in the translation of the Gayo narrative--“The Legend of the Origin of Depik”-- The study investigated the strategies employed in the translation process through qualitative content analysis. Interpretation is examined from linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions using Hu's (2001) three-dimensional adaptation and selection theory. The findings showed that strategies like “emptying,” “compensating,” and “leaning on” were used, however, the translation faced challenges in attaining accuracy, cultural connotations, and effective communication. Translators must prioritize these aspects to achieve a faithful rendition, aligning eco-translatology’s three-dimensional adaptation and selection theory. This research emphasizes the importance of environmental awareness in translation and highlights the need for further attention to ensure successful ecological and culturally sensitive translations.

Abstract

This study aims 1) to compare the speaking performance of university students who graduated from Islamic boarding school and public school-based senior high schools and 2) to investigate the potential factors affecting the difference of their speaking performance. First year students of a State Islamic University in Lampung - Indonesia participated as the subjects of research. The data of students’ speaking performance was obtained from the documentation of students’ speaking entrance test score. Then, a semi-closed-ended questionnaire investigating the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs in their previous high schools covering the sorts, the frequency, and the duration of the activities was distributed to disclose the underlying reasons of the speaking performance differences. The results revealed that generally the Islamic boarding school-based senior high school graduates’ speaking performance is slightly better than the public-based one with a minor difference on the five aspects of speaking assessment. The former showed better achievement in fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, whereas the latter got better result in grammar and pronunciation. Dissimilar variations of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at both types of school and the frequency of the activities might be the potential factors affecting the differences.

Abstract

This research investigates the correlation between students’ habits of reading English novels and their ability to translate from English to Indonesian. A preliminary study involving 61 students revealed that 33 of them encountered difficulties in English-Indonesian translation, particularly in selecting appropriate vocabulary and constructing sentences that accurately convey the meaning of the original text. The study aims to determine whether a consistent habit of reading English novels influences translation proficiency among students. The research employed a correlational design and focused on fifth-semester students from the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. A sample of 61 students was selected randomly. Data collection involved a questionnaire with 20 items assessing students’ reading habits in English novels and a translation test to evaluate their proficiency in English-Indonesian translation. Statistical analysis using SPSS and the Pearson Product Moment formula indicated a significant positive correlation (rcount = 0.619, rtable = 0.248, N = 61, p < 0.05) between students’ reading habits and their translation abilities. This finding supports the hypothesis (Ha) that there exists a meaningful relationship between regular English novel reading habits and proficiency in English-Indonesian translation.

Abstract

Youth unemployment is a growing concern in North Sumatra, exacerbated by a skills mismatch between the workforce and industry needs. Despite the region's rich cultural heritage and abundant natural resources, especially in tourism, these sectors remain underdeveloped. The purpose of this study is to explore how cultural and tourism industries can help alleviate youth unemployment in North Sumatra. Data was collected through surveys and a review of literature, highlighting a lack of vocational training in relevant areas, particularly in hospitality and cultural preservation. Results indicate that the tourism and cultural sectors have untapped potential for job creation. However, without targeted vocational training and collaboration between the government and private sector, this potential will remain unrealized. The discussion focuses on addressing the skills gap and integrating cultural heritage into tourism to create sustainable employment opportunities. In conclusion, strategic investment in vocational education, alongside the promotion of cultural tourism, can significantly reduce unemployment while preserving North Sumatra’s unique cultural identity.

Abstract

Abstract

The transition to technology-mediated assessment in education has reshaped testing practices globally, yet its implications for vocational students remain underexplored. This study investigates vocational learners’ perceptions of summative English testing conducted through digital platforms, focusing on the perceived benefits and drawbacks. Drawing on a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with students from a vocational institution. The findings reveal a complex interplay between usability, fairness, and performance impact. While some students appreciated the efficiency and immediate feedback of digital tests, many expressed concerns over interface unfamiliarity, limited digital literacy, and heightened test anxiety, which they felt adversely affected their performance. These perceptions were further influenced by socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, suggesting potential inequities in assessment outcomes. The study highlights the need for more inclusive and accessible digital assessment designs tailored to the vocational context. Implications for educators and policymakers include the integration of digital literacy support and the development of student-centered testing platforms to enhance validity and fairness in language evaluation.

Abstract

This study investigated the multifaceted nature of speaking anxiety among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and sought to extract valuable insights from a student's experiences in overcoming this challenge. Speaking anxiety is a pervasive issue, frequently rooted in a lack of confidence, which often manifests as embarrassment, fear, and a reluctance to demonstrate speaking proficiency, leading many students to remain silent in classroom settings. Employing a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, this research utilized personal stories as the primary data source. The participant was a single female student, identified as DK, enrolled in the 6th semester of the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Data were meticulously collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. The analytical process involved constructing the participant's life narrative and interpreting the transcribed data using Clandinin and Caine's three-dimensional narrative inquiry framework, encompassing the dimensions of time, social-personal interaction, and place. The findings revealed three distinct categories of anxiety experienced by the student: trait anxiety, situational-specific anxiety, and state anxiety. Additionally, past trauma was identified as a significant antecedent triggering speaking anxiety. A notable finding was the participant's remarkable persistence and resilience in managing her anxiety, enabling her to maintain active engagement within both classroom and broader campus environments. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of speaking anxiety and offers valuable perspectives on coping mechanisms within the Indonesian EFL context.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is often overshadowed by reading- and writing-centered instruction in junior high English classes, limiting opportunities for learners to develop real-world communication skills. Addressing this gap, the present qualitative study explores how narrative text–based internet second-language collective video quizzes shape student interest and, in turn, enhance listening assessment. Guided by Krapp’s Person-Object Theory of Interest, the research examined 20 Indonesian junior teenagers enrolled in an extracurricular conversation course. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire and follow-up semi-structured interviews with five focal students. Questionnaire items were mapped onto the emotional, value-related, and cognitive dimensions of interest, while interview transcripts provided nuanced insight into learners’ experiences. Findings reveal robust engagement across all three dimensions: 85 % of students reported positive emotions such as enjoyment and excitement, 80 % perceived the activity as personally valuable for real-life English use, and 90 % demonstrated heightened cognitive involvement, including curiosity, prediction, and vocabulary acquisition. Interview data corroborated these patterns, highlighting the motivational power of storylines, visual cues, and immediate feedback embedded in the quizzes. Collectively, the results indicate that narrative video quizzes are not merely attractive add-ons but effective, interest-driven tools for assessing and fostering listening skills in adolescent EFL contexts. The study recommends integrating similar multimedia, story-rich assessments to create learner-centered, low-anxiety listening environments. Abstract

Speaking ability is an important component in English language learning that enables students to communicate effectively. This study examines the influence of students' English course background on their speaking ability at Ma'had Al Jami'ah, UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation from ten English Education students who had previous course experience. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify patterns and categories related to course duration, frequency, and teaching methods. The results show that differences in course duration, frequency, and teaching methods affect vocabulary mastery, fluency, and confidence. Intensive camp-based programs that provide daily practice and exposure to English result in greater improvements in speaking skills, while short-term or grammar-focused courses result in limited progress. In addition, the Ma'had environment, which integrates structured language programs and daily use of English, plays a crucial role in strengthening and accelerating students' oral skills. This study concludes that English courses provide a foundation for speaking proficiency, but consistent practice and a supportive environment are the main factors that strengthen students' communicative competence.
