Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of field studies as a pedagogical tool to enhance report writing skills in management students, who often encounter challenges such as idea generation, sentence construction, thought organization, and low motivation during the writing process. The research primarily aims to analyze the implementation and effectiveness of field studies in teaching report writing, proposing solutions to bolster writing skills and motivation among management students. A qualitative descriptive methodology was employed, involving 25 second-semester management students and an English Language lecturer as participants. The sample was selected through purposive sampling. Data collection comprised observations and interviews, analyzed using Miles and Huberman's qualitative analysis framework, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and a process for drawing conclusions and verification. The findings reveal that field studies in report writing, as implemented at Widyagama Lumajang, utilize a structured approach comprising pre-teaching, teaching, and post-teaching stages. Notable benefits include fostering idea development from real-world experiences, enhancing research and academic writing skills, and boosting critical thinking and student motivation. This approach provides a dynamic learning environment that is both relevant and engaging. Consequently, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the application and advantages of field studies in teaching report writing in Management. It offers insights into effective strategies to address the common challenges faced by students in developing their writing skills.

Abstract

This study intends to identify the requirements of students and teachers for enhancing speaking skills and validate the use of interactive video in the classroom. This study used the ADDIE model's research and development (R&D) methodology: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Thus, it validated the teacher's material requirements and analyzed the students' needs. This study includes three English instructors and 18 secondary school students from MTS Miftahul Ulum Lumajang. Observation of classes, interviews, and questionnaires were utilized to collect data for this study. However, an interview revealed that the teacher frequently encountered difficulties devising English material for the junior high school class, particularly for the eighth grade, due to students' asking and expressing opinions. This study revealed, through a questionnaire, that the majority of teachers (66.7%) had difficulty enhancing students' speaking abilities by asking and giving opinions. This study revealed that the majority of students (72.2%) struggle to develop their speaking skills through asking and responding. Therefore, interactive video must be utilized. This study has provided the majority of teachers with a positive perspective on the effectiveness of interactive videos in enhancing speaking proficiency.

Abstract

Teachers’ emotional intelligence has become an important part in students’ learning outcomes and experiences especially in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. This study focuses on high school students’ perceptions of their teachers’ emotional intelligence and its impact on their speaking skills and classroom engagement.  This is a case study. Eight third-grade students in different senior high schools who have known of their teachers’ personalities during the educational process were interviewed.  The findings showed that teachers’ positive emotions can increase students’ self-confidence and motivate them to improve their English speaking skills.  Conversely, when teachers expressed impatience or anger in front of the classroom, it could decrease students' learning engagement, as they experienced stress and fear about making sounds in the classroom.  This study revealed that emotional intelligence is very important in creating a positive learning environment, making English classes much more effective, and helping students improve their speaking skills.
