Abstract

Abstract: English for young learners (EYL) studies have dealt with quiet number of teaching methods and strategies. However, researchers have not conducted adequate analyses of EYL teacher candidates’ creativity in integrating the local context into their lesson plans. This writing, therefore, address this issue by analyzing the teacher candidates’ portfolio when they take English for Children course. Limitation of accessibility, however, have led this study to only focus on analyzing the portfolios submitted by the teacher candidates pursuing their S1 degree in an English Language Teaching Department of State Islamic College of Metro Lampung, Indonesia. This study will contribute to filling the gap of the stakeholders’ expectation toward the possibility of integrating the local context, particularly Islamic values as they are the prominent characteristic of the college, into the arena of ELT within Indonesian context. The analysis shows that local and ideological features are inseparable in ELT and that those are commonly integrated with songs and pictures.Key words: EYL, EFL, ELT, creativity, local context

Abstract The concept of English vocabulary might have been overgeneralized as a list of words to note or to memorize.  The concept is full of technical terms to digest such as word family, lexeme, multi-words unit, polysemy, collocation, connotation, idiom, and so forth. In teaching vocabulary, then, those terms ought to be considered in line with the effort of finding out the approach the teacher finds useful. This would be much more effective when the supports from the institution, in the form of policies, are available. The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges and opportunities of teaching English vocabulary within a specific formal education background called English Language Teaching Department of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro. Such purposes are viewed in the perspective of the possible policies that could be implemented by the department. Therefore, a policy research consisting of four phases is used. The phases involve identifiying issues and problems, understanding key issues, setting up treatments, and monitoring and evaluating the progress. This research suggests that the department or institution pursue such policies as setting up a standardization of English-English dictionary, implementing the minimum requirement of vocabulary competency, and shifting paradigm or approach of teaching vocabulary. A lexical approach is highly recommended for it embraces the related technical terms within the concept of English vocabulary. Keywords: Vocabulary, word family, policy research, lexical approach.

Abstract

English Language Teaching (ELT) practices are strongly underpinned by an epistemological view. Different beliefs on what constitute as sources of knowledge and methods of knowledge acquisition bring about different instructional implications. The case is true within the context of ELT at Indonesian Islamic higher education where the desired goals of the English teaching are not only for mastering language skills and pedagogy but also for strengthening Islamic faith and nurturing virtuous action. This research, therefore, aims to provide a description of how the decision makers and ELT practitioners at the Islamic higher education view the Islamic epistemology conceptually and practically. It addresses an attitude toward the epistemological contestation between Islam and West, as well as the strategies of integrating Islamic epistemology into English language instruction. A case study with a qualitative technique of data collection was conducted. Four decision makers, with a formal educational background of Islamic epistemology, and three ELT practitioners were involved as the research participants. The findings show that: First, ELT has its roots in Quranic revelation and prophetic tradition. Second, the Islamic epistemology and the Western epistemology ought to be interconnected rather than to be put within a contestation framework. Third, the Islamic epistemology should be integrated, explicitly or implicitly, into the curriculum, teaching materials, classroom scenario, assessment, academic atmosphere, and research policy. It is recommended that ELT practitioners responsibly explore the notion of Qur'an as the basis of linguistics and language pedagogy, and creatively accommodate the issues of locality and particularity into their instructional activities.

Abstract

The emerging interest in using literature to teach English has not yet highlighted the significance of Islamic literature within Indonesian educational context. This article presents the portrayal of Islamic literature in English language teaching (ELT) study area and offers a possible conceptual model of integrating Islamic literature into ELT. Following a library research method, with the corpus consisting of fourteen stories and one poem derived from fifteen books, the findings of this study show that: most works of Islamic literature are designed for fluent readers; the presentation of Islamic literature is dominated by Middle East and Western writers; and the Western writers are not always sensitive to the symbols glorified by Muslim English learners in Indonesia. As to deal with the above findings, this study proposes a conceptual model consisting of input, process, and output elements. Not only does the proposed model strengthen the position of Islamic literature, but it also integrates the Islamic literature into English language teaching so that it could reach both fluent readers and beginning readers. The output of the proposed model, abridged and unabridged texts of the Islamic literature, can be utilized to teach vocabulary, grammar, the four basic skills of language, and Islamic values.

Abstract

Although Islamic literature has gained serious attention by Islamic world since 1940s, it has not yet taken a significant place in the world literature, let alone in the English language research areas. For its opponents, Islamic literature is not yet underpinned by a solid definition, while for its proponents, Islamic literature needs further exploration in the sense of its instructional implication. This article seeks to strengthen the existence of Islamic literature by offering its theological and social grounds as well as by proposing possible instructional strategies of using the Islamic literature in teaching English within the contemporary Indonesian context. Research method including R & D and a library research were employed to collect and analyze the data. This study finds that Islamic literature has a strong theological ground and a long established social ground. It is also found that using appropriate visuals, high text exploitability, and relevant glosses are among the effective instructional strategies.

Abstract

The violence act toward the Shi’a followers in Indonesia indicates a gab in term of communication among the different Islamic school of thoughts (mazhab). Such gab is in need of urgent response from various approaches including education approach. This article shows that education is a relevant entry point to bridge those different Islamic school of thoughts and to narrow down the existing gab. To many extents, Shi’a has experienced remarkable progress in education field particularly since Morteza Muthahhari’s era in Iran through the change of educational philosophy which breaks such polarization of religion knowledge and modern science. Such revolution of education was strengthened by the works and thoughts of Muhammad Husain Fadlullah in Lebanon. Fadlullah was a marja’ whose sayings and thoughts on social, political, and educational matters, resonates and reaches Indonesia. His thought resonance is clearly seen in Jalaluddin Rakhmat’s playing important role in establishing Muthahhari Foundation in which one of its mission is to promote effective communication among the Islamic school of thoughts in Indonesia. The foundation also focuses on education field particularly through the establishment of SMA Plus Muthharari in Bandung. Some remarkable achievement of SMA Plus Muthahhari, besides being acknowledged by reputable institutions both private and state, show the superiority of Shi’ah educational philosophy implementation in Indonesia. The thought resonance among Shi’a leaders and its manifestation in Indonesia not only brings positive fresh air to Indonesia educational context but also carries hope for the betterment of communication among the Islamic school of thoughts so that the differences existing within the schools would be seen as a dynamic of religion life in the pluralistic Indonesia
