READING INTEREST OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY

Nowadays, the development of the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language has been transformed. Learners do not only focus on the learning of speaking and writing but also reading since they are required to be able to smartly respond to the texts they are reading. The development of the information and technology forces the focus of teaching and learning on the critical reading that might be less interesting for the students. The students may not know their interest in reading before they start reading. A unique condition in Magelang regency, a small town close to Yogyakarta, the students of senior high schools have achieved their best achievement for their learning that can be seen from the rank of the school that becomes the best school in terms of the final examination in Central Java. To know the teaching and learning of English in that school can be an alternative for other schools. Based on the case study conducted in some schools in Magelang regency, it can be found that the teaching and learning are still varied. The findings were discussed under the following terms; studentsâ reading activities, mastery of reading skills, reading materials, and reading modality. It is a problem for the success of language teaching as the students can have low motivation in reading if the reading materials were not interesting for them.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan WebQuests sebagai media pembelajaran membaca bagi siswa kelas dua SMAN 1 Muntilan tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Pengembangan WebQuests dilaksanakan melalui tiga tahapan utama, yakni analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan produk, dan ujicoba. Analisis kebutuhan dilakukan melalui proses studi pustaka, membuat instrumen analisis kebutuhan, pengumpulan data kebutuhan siswa, dan menganalisis kebutuhan siswa. Pada tahap pengembangan produk, peneliti mengembangkan produk awal, dan memvalidasi produk awal pada ahli. Tahap ujicoba dilakukan dua kali, yakni ujicoba skala kecil dan ujicoba skala besar. Data yang diperoleh dari siswa dan ahli terhadap penggunaan WebQuests sebagai media pembelajaran membaca dikumpulkan melalui diskusi kelompok, kuesioner, dokumen, dan catatan lapangan. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif dan deskriptif kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengembangan WebQuests dari aspek kualitas isi dapat dikategorikan sebagai bagus. Pengembangan produk tersebut telah berhasil mencapai tujuan dalam memfasilitasi siswa kelas dua dalam pembelajaran membaca di SMAN 1 Muntilan

This study was a need analysis study as a part of the research and development of instructional materials for English for Business (EFB) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang. This study was aimed at finding the students? needs on their EFB course in terms of their personal characteristics, English proficiency assumption, learning motivation, and personal interest in their learning English. This study was conducted in a qualitative study that involved the nature of the qualitative study in nature. The findings of the study indicated that (1) the students? were adolescents that were ready and conscious to get the lesson, (2) the students felt that they did not have good English mastery, (3) the students? motivation in learning individually was not as high as learning in groups though they realized that they needed to master the target language, and (4) the students? preferred to have more topics on Islamic values and functions in English and teacher?s roles are planner, information provider, and resource developer.

This study investigates the culture-based instructional materials (C-BIM) model to improve students’ reading and writing skills viewed from critical thinking skills at the junior-high-school in Indonesia. This study is a mixed-method employing the explanatory sequential design. The data are in the form of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data are collected first and followed by the quantitative one. The research instruments are in the form of reading and writing tests, questionnaires, and interview sheets. The test is used to see the students’ reading and writing achievements. Meanwhile, the questionnaire is utilized to determine the students’ and teachers’ intercultural awareness and perception of incorporating cultures in teaching materials. The data of reading-writing achievement are analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Thus, the data of students’ and teachers’ cultural awareness and perception are gained by applying qualitative steps: analysis, reduction, coding, interpretation, and conclusion. Based on the result of the research, this study indicates that the C-BIM model significantly affects students’ reading and writing skills. Also, it has an interaction between teaching materials and critical thinking skills. Researchers elaborate on those in the discussion part of this article regarding the students' intercultural competence and perception.

Assessment has become one major focus in language teaching. In relation to the curriculum and the focus of language teaching in Indonesian context, probably reading plays an important roles. To make it connected, the reading assessment has become one field that the stakeholders concerned about. It is absolutely known that administering reading assessment is not easy, one factor is the money spend in administering the reading assessment. Therefore there is a need to create more efficient and feasible reading assessment on the new contexts of the language learners. As internet and computer become common things had by most of the language learners, there is a tendency to develop reading assessment through the use of internet and computer. Internet provide not only new and recent materials, it also meets the practicality and the feasibility of the reading assessment stated before.

Information and communication technology has been growing faster and larger in education in general and in English language teaching in particular. The use of this media is supported by the behaviorist due to its beneficial impacts for the teaching and learning processes. In Indonesian context, the use of computer assisted language learning has been implemented during the teaching and learning processes though many teachers and students do not have sufficient competence. Thus is due to the curriculum requires the teachers to make benefits from the media. In fact, there are many obstacles found by both teachers and students in implementing the media. Therefore, in this writing, the writer make theoretical review on the implementation of computer assisted language learning during the teaching of English in terms of its opportunities and challenges. All parties involved in the teaching and learning processes should correspond the benefits of the media and the challenges of the media use in order to accelerate the success of EFL teaching and learning.

The teaching of reading during the pandemic Covid-19 is challenging regarding the use of digital reading. The sudden swifts should be conducted by the teachers and the students to deal with the healthy protocols and the instructional goals. This study is aimed at gathering data about the situation at the digital reading class. A qualitative study focusing on the qualitative ethnographic research design was conducted to reveal the current condition of the digital reading class. The results of the study suggest that consideration on the teaching preparation including needs analysis on digital reading, development of the digital reading instruction, and aspects of improving the students’ motivation in digital reading in Islamic university context. The development of the digital reading instruction should respond to the students’ digital reading performance, digital reading motivation, higher order thinking skills, and navigation skills.

The purpose of this study is to find out how the influence of the use of discovery learningmodel as a means of improving the learning motivation and learning outcomes of grade VIstudents in 03/20 Nambangan, North Rejowinangun, Central Magelang district, MagelangCity in the era of the covid-19 pandemic. This study uses class action research (PTK). Aclass were selected in this study. Data collection are gathered from the students’ reportbook and postest through the use of discovery learning model. Based on the results of dataanalysis in cycle one with an average of 50 before the treatment while in cycle II there isan average increase of 100 after the treatment of the discovery learning model. It can beconcluded that discovery learning model can increase students' learning motivation andlearning outcomes
