Abstract

Transpiration plays very important role in ensuring good plant metabolism. However, techniques/methods used for its assessment are difficult and also quite demanding in terms of resources and technical know-how. Again, the results from transpiration measurements are not applicable to different samples and locations. Therefore it is necessary to study the relationship between transpiration ability with growth dimension of seedlings for predicting transpiration ability by a simple method. The research design was the completely randomized design with mycorrhizae arbuscular inoculants. This study used inoculants from silviculture laboratory identified as Glomus etunicatum (M1) and Gigaspora margarita (M2). Regression model analysis was used to determine the relationship between transpiration ability with growth dimension of Acacia decurrens seedling. There was a positive effect of mycorrhizae symbiosis which increased the transpiration ability with a strong relation for increasing seedling growth dimension. Transpiration ability is superior in G. etunicatum of 0.002863 mol m-2 s-1. The transpiration ability in control and G. etunicatum could be predicted with regression equation of R2 >70%, but in M2 intervention the model could not be predicted it was because of multi-colonization between the independent variable.Key words: Acacia decurrens, Gigaspora margarita, Glomus etunicatum, Regression, Transpiration

Abstract

Soil Macrofauna has a very important role in maintaining soil fertility through the decomposition of organic matter, nutrient distribution, increasing soil aeration and so on. The existence of soil macrofauna are very important in helping the process of rehabilitation of post-mining land because they contribute to the improvement of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil. The purposes of this study are to identify and quantify the diversity of soil macrofauna in various types of stands and land without stand in Holcim Educational Forest. The highest abundance of soil macrofauna was found in mixed stand with 240 individuals in nine plots of observation, each plot was 40 cm x 40 cm. Layers of soil (0-10 cm) has an abundance of soil macrofauna higher than in the litter layer, because soil layer can provide protection from direct sunlight and enough food for soil macrofauna. Mixed stand has the highest soil macrofauna diversity (H '= 2.52, DMG = 6.93, J' = 0.63), as it has a more diverse vegetation and highest canopy density. Environmental conditions such as soil temperature, canopy density, and soil organic matter can influence the composition and abundance of soil macrofauna, so that the soil macrofauna can be used as an indicator in monitoring environmental quality. Soil macrofauna that dominates in all the stands and land without stand, were red ants (Formicidae 7), termites (Rhinotermitidae 1), earthworms (Megascolecidae 1), and larvae of Coleoptera (Scarabaeidae 1).Key words: abundance, diversity, environment, soil macrofauna

Abstract

Forest land conversion into oil palm plantation causes drastic ecological changes which influence various species in the ecosystem. Arthropoda, as one of the components of biodiversity, has important roles as herbivore, predator and parasitoid, and detritivore. This research was conducted in village of Runtu, Subdistrict of Arut Selatan, District of Kotawaringin Barat, the province of Central Kalimantan. Techniques of Arthropoda sample collection were pitfall trap, malaise trap, and sweep net conducted in two ecosystems. The two ecosystems were ecotone (transition between forest and oil palm plantation) and oil palm plantation. Research results showed that forest existence could increase the abundance of arthropoda. Abundance of Arthropoda in ecotone ecosystem was higher as compared to that in oil palm plantation. Populations of predator and parasitoid Arthropoda were higher in ecotone ecosystem.Key words: Arthropoda, detritivore, herbivore, oil palm plantation, predator, parasitoid

Abstract

Land evaluation of a tract of land, for its suitability to be planted with a particular plantation species is an importantstep for species choice in plantation forest. A weight factor matching (WFM) approach of this study, was used to identifysuitable land for jati (Tectona grandis L.f) in PT. Melapi Timber, East Kalimantan. Land suitability is affected by climate, soil and topograph. According to WFM, the results indicated that important variables which limit T. grandis in theresearch area were pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), potassium (P) and soil depth condition. The study results showthat 4 of 5 land units are marginally suitable (S3) for T. grandis cultivation in PT. Melapi Timber.Key words: Land evaluation, suitability, Tectona grandis L.f., weight factor matching (WFM)

Abstract

The need of bamboo raw materials, betung bamboo for instance, keeps increasing in line with the rising rate of population growth and science development. Therefore, stands of bamboo clumps with sustainable productivity and quality, are absolutely required. One of betung bamboo’s characteristics is presence of adventitious roots in branches of bamboo culm. The problem is that many of such branches often have dry adventitious roots which are brown in color. Based on such condition, research of the effect of presence of dry adventitious roots, need to be conducted, as well as the effect of growth media, on the growth of bamboo branch cuttings. The research objective is to examine the effect of bamboo branches with dry adventitious roots and planting media on growth of betung bamboo’s branch cuttings. The media used are soil, rice husk charcoal and compost. The experiment which used factorial RAK design showed that planting media significantly affected leaf numbers, whereas adventitious roots had significant effect on all measured parameters, including shoot length, shoot numbers, leaf numbers, oven dry weight of roots, and survival percentage. Media with the highest leaf numbers were mixture of soil and rice husk charcoal. Keywords: adventitious root, Dendrocalamus asper, planting media, branch cutting

Abstract

Mining activities were carried out, causing damage on soils, increased rates of erosion, decline in productivity and stability of the land. The revegetation process takes a long time, so it needs to plant cover crop plants. The goal of planting cover crop is to protect the soil from erosion . This research aims to study the composition of understory vegetation, and its potential to function as cover crops on soil which contain lime and silica in PT Holcim Indonesia Tbk. Undergrowth vegetation which was dominant in the ex- mining land of silica and lime were Imperata cylindrica and Eleusine indica soil properties in both locations were categorized as not fertile. Abstract
