Abstract

Learning English as a foreign language has always been a challenge for many learners in Indonesia. In the past, learning English in classrooms might not be as interesting and varied as it is now. Thus, this research aimed at describing adult learners’ perception on learning English and their experience when learning it during school. The participants of this research were 15 school staff, aged 20 to 50 years old, who were taking English course for employees at the time. Under qualitative research, the researcher used close-ended questionnaire, field-note, and documentation as the research instruments to collect the data from the participants. Some simple statistics was used only to find out the salient patterns from the data which would later be explained descriptively. The findings indicated that despite the participants being interested in learning English, they really had a hard time learning it and went through such monotonous English teaching and learning in the past. This research also managed to expose the participants’ difficulties in composing simple sentences orally and in writing. Although the generalization could not be simply made from this research, the result of the research demonstrated some problems in English language learning at school which made learners could not perform the language on an ongoing basis.

Abstract

Kebaron Village, recognized as a tourist destination boasting extensive rose-picking gardens, continues to encounter several challenges in managing its tourist area, resulting in suboptimal tourism potential and a limited number of visitors. These challenges encompass a dearth of directions to tourist sites and a lack of product diversity that appeals to visitors. This community service aims to bolster garden management and maximize the tourism potential of Kebaron Village by enhancing tourist allure through the improvement of facilities and the diversification of derivative products from red guava fruit. The methods employed include the installation of road signposts, creation and installation of Sapta Pesona points, as well as education on clean production and assistance in producing derivative products. The outcomes of this program entail an enhanced public understanding of clean production, along with improved skills in crafting derivative products from guava fruit, such as ice cream and leather. Additionally, the installation of road signposts and Sapta Pesona points has effectively heightened the accessibility and tourist allure of Kebaron Village.

Abstract

Although folk tales are central to the nation’s cultural heritage, their potential in English language education is often overlooked due to the dominance of traditional literacy practices and limited multimodal learning. Implementing multiliteracies pedagogy also remains underexplored. This study explores how adapting folk tales into English-language picture books within a multiliteracies framework can enrich university-level EFL pedagogy. Moving beyond translation, this approach encourages students to critically reflect on cultural narratives while expressing them creatively through multimodal design. The project involved thirty-six seventh-semester students in a Literature in ELT course. It was structured around the four pedagogical stages of the multiliteracies framework: Situated Practice, Overt Instruction, Critical Framing, and Transformed Practice. Using a qualitative content analysis design, researchers collected data through classroom observations, field notes, group discussions, student projects, and interviews. Findings show that students critically engage with folk tales’ sociocultural, moral, and symbolic dimensions. They reinterpreted these stories for new audiences, balancing creative adaptation with cultural authenticity. This process enhanced their multimodal composition skills, textual analysis, and audience awareness while strengthening their confidence and voice as future educators. The study highlights the value of integrating folk tales and multimodal practices in EFL settings to promote critical thinking, intercultural competence, and pedagogical creativity. Students showed a greater sense of identity formation through the project, emphasizing the transformative impact of culturally responsive, student-centered pedagogies. This study recommends future research to explore applying student-generated picture books in a real classroom with supporting pedagogical variables to evaluate their impact on long-term literacy development.

Abstract

General Background: Vocabulary acquisition is a crucial component of English language learning, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at vocational high schools. Specific Background: Traditional teaching methods often fail to engage students effectively, leading to poor retention and limited practical application. Knowledge Gap: While various digital tools exist, research on the effectiveness of Wordwall in enhancing vocabulary retention in ESP contexts remains limited. Aims: This study investigates the impact of Wordwall on students' vocabulary acquisition and memory retention. Results: A quasi-experimental study using pre-tests and post-tests on two groups (experimental and control) revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary retention among students using Wordwall. The post-test scores of the experimental group (M=72.5) were significantly higher than the control group (M=58.5), supported by a Wilcoxon test (p<0.05). Novelty: Unlike conventional methods, Wordwall provides an interactive, gamified learning experience that enhances student motivation and engagement. Implications: These findings suggest that integrating Wordwall into ESP instruction can effectively support vocabulary development, promoting better language proficiency and practical communication skills in vocational education. Future research should explore its application across diverse educational settings. Highlights: Interactive Learning Enhances Retention – Wordwall's gamified approach significantly improves vocabulary retention compared to traditional methods. Significant Performance Improvement – Students using Wordwall scored notably higher (M=72.5) than the control group (M=58.5), proving its effectiveness. Practical Implications for ESP – Integrating Wordwall into vocational education fosters engagement, making language learning more relevant and effective.
