Abstract

Abstract

The ability to communicate in the classroom is an essential point for teachers to convey lessons material well. Some experts state that communication is a form of verbal and nonverbal language. This study analyzes how pre-service teachers prepare to become professional English teachers in teaching English as a foreign language. By using two different theories, Brown (2007) and Hall (1959), the researchers investigate the extent to which pre-service teachers use verbal and non-verbal language in the practice of teaching English to elementary students. In collecting data, researchers conducted observations and interviews to research subjects. The researchers then analyzed the data in several stages and made conclusions. In a nutshell, all pre-service teachers with different levels, low and competent, use verbal and nonverbal language during their teaching practice. However, they have different academic contributions to their performance in teaching English to young learners.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of code mixing in online English classes at the junior high school level, focusing on the type and frequency of code mixing employed by both the English teacher and students. Data were collected through video recording and observation at SMPN 3 Candi in Sidoarjo, employing a qualitative research design. Muysken's theory (2000) was used to analyze the variation of code mixing in the English class, which included alternation, insertion, and congruent lexicalization. The most prevalent type of code mixing observed was alternation, used as an alternative teaching strategy to enhance student comprehension. The study involved a non-participant observation approach, with data categorized by dates and dialogues classified based on code mixing types. Results indicated that alternation was the dominant code mixing type used by the teacher and students, facilitating improved understanding of English materials. The research concludes that code mixing serves as a valuable pedagogical tool in the learning process, acting as a bridge between students and teachers. The implications suggest further exploration of code mixing in educational institutions and the development of teaching techniques based on the findings to enhance language learning experiences. Highlight: The study examines code mixing patterns in online English classes at the junior high school level, focusing on the usage by teachers and students. The most frequently used code mixing type is alternation, which serves as an effective alternative teaching strategy for facilitating student comprehension. Code mixing functions as a bridge between teachers and students, enhancing the learning process and aiding in understanding English materials. Further research in educational institutions can explore its benefits and potential for developing effective teaching techniques. Abstract

Abstract

In order to achieve quality learning in accordance with the aspirations and the fourth goal of SDGs, teachers need to create learning that is complete and in accordance with the needs of students. This complete and appropriate learning can be demonstrated by the teaching modules used by the teacher. In fact, teachers still encounter problems in compiling teaching modules that suit the needs of students in the current era of digital technology. This obstacle is also experienced by high school English teachers in Sidoarjo. One of the challenges is the lack of innovation in using and implementing information and technology-based English learning media. Therefore, with this community service, the authors aim to increase the high school English teachers' innovation through training on teaching module development with EdPuzzle integration. The success of this program was measured from a questionnaire filled out by the teachers. As a result, teachers who previously did not know what EdPuzzle was were finally able to create and implement it in class. They argue that digital media such as EdPuzzle is very useful for teaching and learning English. Thus, this community service has been carried out properly and succeeded in achieving the planned goals.
