Abstract

Practicum activities are inseparable components in learning biology. This research aims at revealing variety of practicum models designed by lecturers and the factors that influence their decisions to implement particular practicum models in their biology learning in ITE. The research was conducted for two semesters, involving 72 lecturers in 6 ITEs in Jember and Malang, Indonesia. The data were collected using interview method and document analysis. The results of this research revealed that the practicum model commonly implemented by the respondents were cooking recipe based practice model. This research also revealed that the current practicum structure does not have much development or difference from the practicum structure found in the previous studies. Although this practicum model has several disadvantages, the cooking recipe based practice model results in relatively good achievement of biology learning outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Environmental greening and waste management are critical issues in sustainable education. This community engagement activity aims to raise students' awareness of sustainable agriculture through the creation of Seed Bombs, a simple greening innovation utilizing recycled paper and other biodegradable materials. The activity was conducted at the Plant Cultivation Laboratory of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), involving students from MTsN Karanganyar in an interactive outing class. The method included material presentations, Seed Bomb-making demonstrations, and evaluation of students' understanding and participation. The results showed that students not only gained technical knowledge of sustainable agriculture but also developed an awareness of utilizing waste for environmental conservation. A total of 50 Seed Bombs of various shapes and sizes were successfully created. This initiative is expected to inspire other educational institutions to develop similar programs as part of their environmental sustainability efforts.

Abstract

Indonesia's multicultural landscape presents both opportunities and challenges for educational institutions in fostering inclusive learning environments. This mixed-method case study explores the experiences of Biology Education pre-service teachers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), particularly within a Project-Based Practicum (PBP) in a Histology course. The research involved 43 students as participants. Data were collected using two instruments: a modified short-form Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ) and a semi-structured interview guide. Quantitative data from the MPQ were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative interview data were examined through thematic analysis. The findings reveal that UMS students demonstrate high levels of tolerance, cultural empathy, and collaboration skills, essential for navigating diverse educational settings. However, challenges such as language barriers and cultural nuances were observed, particularly among minority groups from various Javanese regions. The implementation of PBP proved effective in enhancing students' interaction, communication, and adaptability. These results underscore the importance of inclusive, project-based learning models in developing cross-cultural competence, emotional resilience, and open-mindedness in multicultural classrooms

Abstract

Metacognitive skills are essential for 21st-century learners, enabling students to plan, monitor, and evaluate their thinking processes. However, these skills remain underdeveloped among junior high school students in Ternate, particularly in multiethnic classroom settings. This study investigates the effectiveness of cooperative learning models—STAD, NHT, and a combined STAD–NHT model—in enhancing students' metacognitive skills across different ethnic groups. This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest–posttest nonequivalent control group design involving 76 multiethnic Grade VII students from four public junior high schools in Ternate City. Students were grouped into four treatment conditions: STAD, NHT, combined STAD–NHT, and conventional learning. Data on metacognitive skills were collected through an essay-based test aligned with Corebima’s rubric, and analyzed using ANCOVA with LSD post hoc tests to examine the effects of learning models, ethnicity, and their interaction. The combined STAD–NHT model produced significantly greater improvements in students’ metacognitive skills compared to individual models and conventional learning. Ternate ethnic students showed higher metacognitive gains than their Makian and Tidore peers. A significant interaction between learning models and ethnicity was found, indicating that sociocultural factors influenced the effectiveness of cooperative learning. Findings suggest that combining STAD and NHT can support metacognitive development in multiethnic classrooms. However, cultural responsiveness in instructional design is critical. Further research is needed to explore how cultural norms shape collaborative learning and metacognitive growth.

Abstract

Despite the increasing environmental challenges, public awareness of proper waste management, particularly in Indonesia, remains low. This research aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a QR code-based waste sorting booklet to promote practical waste management practices in households and educational institutions. The research method used is development research with the Plomp development model. A one-group pretest-posttest design is used in the study. Forty elementary school pupils from Palaan Village and Karangsari Village served as the research subjects. Initial information on the state of waste management in the neighborhood was gathered through observation and interview tools. Survey tools were employed to gauge how the community and pupils responded to the booklet's use and the degree of green community that had been established following the implementation of the waste management strategies it suggested. As a result of the research, booklets (OPISA) based on QR Code Technology were created to achieve green community education that is both legitimate and useful. These booklets have a 95% validity rating from material professionals and media experts with extremely good standards. In the meantime, the booklet has a medium level of efficacy in achieving a green community, as indicated by the moderate criteria's N-gain value of 0.44 for green community education. In the meantime, 85% of participants who responded to the booklet's use met the very good criteria, according to user response statistics. In order to raise public awareness of the significance of properly processing waste and creating a clean and healthy environment, the study's conclusion explains how the OPISA booklet can assist the community, particularly in educational institutions, in implementing practical and efficient waste management. It can also help to expand the green community in the school environment.
