Abstract

The separation of the former Soviet Union resulted in non civic divorces; ethnic cleansing, massacres, a territorial dispute which the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute stands as an example of. This conflict has been going on for years and is constantly evolving and regularly flares up resulting in casualties. The differing accusation of Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the issue of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict create different dimensions of the parties. Armenia sees the settlement as in the framework of self-determination whereas Azerbaijan pertains to the principle of territorial integrity in which both are the basic principles of international law thus leading to confusion regarding the legal dimensions of the conflict. With the most recent aggression, it is paramount now more than ever to seek the best possible settlement to put an end to the dispute. Abstract

This research explores the application of literary formulas in Brandon Sanderson’s novel Mistborn: The Final Empire. The research aims to identify the specific narrative formulas employed within the novel’s structure and to map the pattern by which these formulas are integrated to create its compelling narrative. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies Cawelti’s literary formulas and Vogler’s stages of the journey to analyze key scenes, dialogues, passages, and plot events. Data collection involved close reading and detailed note-taking. The findings show that Mistborn integrates three formulas: adventure, mystery, and romance, into the narrative. By mapping the protagonist’s journey onto Vogler’s twelve stages, the study shows a clear pattern where the adventure formula drives the main plot, the mystery intellectually engages the reader, and the romance provides emotional depth. These findings help explain the narrative appeal of the novel and offer a useful framework for understanding how fantasy stories are structurally composed. The study demonstrates how traditional storytelling formulas can be used to create rich and engaging narratives in modern fantasy literature.

Abstract

In writing a literary work, every sentence created by a writer has a purpose of conveying information to the readers, which can be understood by analyzing the presupposition and assertion within each sentence. In this sense, the present study aims on examining how information is organized in the fantasy novel The School for Good and Evil, specifically portraying through the main character. The data for this study was taken from the main character’s utterances within dialogues in the novel, limited to the sentence-level forms. To collect the data from the novel, a documentation method with stratified sampling technique was applied. In this case, the story was divided into five different plot stages with five utterances were selected for each strata, resulting in a total of 25 data for the analysis. Additionally, the present study also applied a qualitative method following the theory of information structure by Lambrecht (1994). These elements were examined to understand how information is structured and what is assumed to be known or introduced as new to the readers. In the result, it revealed that the writer intentionally organize sentences to share information regarding the story in the main character’s utterances throughout the narrative.
