The Relation of Balinese EFL Learners’ Prior Learning Experience and Present Proficiency Pratiwi, Putu Ayu Asty Senja

Abstract

The research tried to shed light on the relation of prior learning experience and motivation in shaping the learners’ proficiency. It investigated the importance of prior learning experience and the role of motivation in learning development. This needed to investigate further to find out how positive and negative prior learning experience with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation determined the way the students, value their phase of learning, and the relation with their present proficiency. From the empirical study of the Balinese EFL learners, there were three types of learners based on the prior learning experience and the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The first type consisted of the learners who had positive prior learning experience, had high intrinsic motivation, and gained high proficiency in their present study; the second type was those who had low intrinsic motivation but changed into high intrinsic motivation due to the extrinsic motivation; the third type was the learners who had negative prior learning experience, low intrinsic motivation, and resulted in low proficiency. In total, 15 students ranging from 19–23 years old (4 males and 11 females) voluntarily participated in the test and interview. Through the in-depth interview, it is found that the positive prior learning experience and high intrinsic motivation motivate the students and lead them to higher proficiency. However, demotivation and a low level of proficiency can occur from the negative prior learning experience and low intrinsic motivation.

Abstract

Public Speaking atau yang lebih umum disebut dengan keterampilan berbicara di depan umum merupakan salah satu keterampilan untuk berbicara di hadapan banyak orang, yang harus dimiliki di era global sekarang ini karena dengan perkembangan zaman dan teknologi yang begitu pesat sekarang ini, kita harus bersaing meningkatkan kualitas diri. Tidak hanya itu, dengan adanya MEA (Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN), yang membuat persaingan di dunia kerja semakin ketat. Pengabdian masyarakat “Pelatihan Public Speaking bagi para anggota Sekaa Teruna Satya Dharma Kerti Banjar Kaja Desa Sesetan” bertujuan agar para anggota Sekaa Teruna dapat memiliki wawasan yang lebih terbuka dan luas serta dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam hal berbicara dan berkomunikasi dengan baik di depan umum dan dapat lebih siap dalam persaingan di dunia kerja. Adapun metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan ini adalah metode tatap muka dan metode evaluasi. Metode tatap muka dilaksanakan dengan memberikan materi secara langsung. Metode evaluasi dilakukan di awal dan akhir pertemuan. Pengabdian ini bertujuan memberi kontribusi pada pengembangan teknik pengajaran Public Speaking bagi Sekaa Teruna dan memberi kontribusi bagi sehingga terjadinya peningkatan dalam pemahaman dan pengetahuan dalam berbicara di depan umum. Setelah mengikuti pelatihan, peserta pelatihan terbukti lebih percaya diri untuk berbicara di depan public karena mereka lebih memahami tata cara berbicara di depan umum.

Abstract

Pelatihan bahasa Inggris komunikatif ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan ungkapan dan tata bahasa bahasa yang dibutuhkan oleh staf penginapan/hotel di sekitar pelabuhan Tanjung Sanghyang Mushroom Bay dan juga memaparkan hasil penerapan teknik role play dan learning by doing dalam pelatihan tersebut. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan selama 8 (delapan) bulan, mulai Maret sampai dengan Oktober 2017. Dari pelatihan yang diberikan, ungkapan-ungkapan yang dibutuhkan bagi para pekerja/staf penginapan dan hotel di Nusa Lembongan merupakan ungkapan bahasa Inggris komunikatif yang berhubungan dengan pelayanan dan jasa. Tata bahasa yang perlu disempurnakan adalah penggunaan auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu) yang sering tidak diucapkan sehingga kalimat menjadi tidak lengkap, penanda kata benda jamak, dan kalimat-kalimat pasif. Selain itu, dari 16 tenses bahasa Inggris, yang paling sering digunakan adalah simple present tense, simple past tense, simple future tense, present perfect tense, dan present continuous tense. Teknik role-play (bermain peran) dan Learning by Doing (belajar sambil langsung mempraktekan) berhasil diterapkan pada pelatihan ini dilihat dari hasil pelatihan dimana peserta bisa bermain peran sambil bercakap-cakap dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris yang baik dan benar. Selain itu, tata bahasa yang telah mereka pelajari langsung bisa dipraktekkan saat pelatihan sehingga peserta memiliki pegetahuan dan pangalaman berkomunikasi dengan tata bahasa yang benar.

Abstract

Scientific work in law field has its own characteristics, including the legal English terminology. Legal English is actually slightly different with general English. Nowadays, there are lots of inappropriate process of language transfer from Bahasa to English can be found especially in abstract, as part of the scientific work related to law field. Thus, such issue will affect the abstract validity as a representation of the contents of the scientific work as a whole. This study used an empirical juridical approach which employed non-probability sampling technique and qualitative descriptive analyses. The results show that the misuse of legal English terminology towards abstract of legal, scientific works may occur due to word-for-word translation, free translation, and literal translation. Based on empirical research, such misuse occurred due to the use of online translation engine which mostly caused by the ignorance of abstract’s authors on the structure of standard academic writing (S- P-O)in the source language and asking help from colleagues who mostly do not have legal background and has minimum knowledge of legal English terminology.

Abstract

Figurative language is a part of semantics study. Through studying semantics, meanings of words can be learnt. This study entitled “Figurative Language in Barack Obama’s Speech at The United Nations General Assembly” is aimed at identifying the types and analyzing the meanings of Figurative Language used by Barack Obama in his first speech at The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The theory stated by Wren & Martin (2000) and Leech (1981) were used in analyzing the data. The data was presented and explained descriptively in the third chapter of this research. Any sentences containing figurative language were differentiated by a code created by the researcher. A speech delivered by Barack Obama at United Nations General Assembly was used as the data source of this research. As a result, there are seventeen data were found containing seven types of figurative language, one data contains a metaphor, three data contain personification, two data contain a symbol, four data contain an apostrophe, four data contain verbal irony, one data contains antithesis, one data contain euphemism, and one data contains epigram. There were five theories of meaning by Leech (1981) implied in the speech, including conceptual, connotative, social, affective, and reflected meaning. As this study is focusing on the theory of figurative language, it is expected that the results will be valuable to students of English Literature or others. The figurative language and meanings applied in this research can be used to provide a clearer and better understanding of the meanings of figurative language.

Abstract

Abstract. This research tried to map the strength and weaknesses and evaluate the English teaching and learning processes in Balinese EFL learners during the online class. The use of IT in online learning has become a central issue for the decreasing of students’ motivation due to the lack of students – teachers’ interaction in the online class especially in English subject. The complexities in the online learning include how the use of IT can be synchronized with teaching and learning methods in delivering the learning material, how is the role of the teacher in motivating students, how to assess students' abilities in online learning, and many more. Those are the unavoidable obstacles faced by teachers and students during the online learning. This study was aimed at evaluating and making English online teaching and learning effective and creating IT-based application to optimized the teaching and learning process and the students’ performance. This qualitative research collects the data  through observation , interviews and English speaking test to 15 students and six teachers. From the empirical studies of the Balinese EFL learners, the students stated that English learning in online classroom atmosphere were ineffective and unsupportive for their English skill development. The problems mainly arise from the lack of practice and interaction which caused a decrease in student motivation and interest in online learning. To be able to overcome those problems, the researcher created learning applications called Speaking Test App. and Teacher Speaking Test App. to facilitate teachers and students in learning process. This application can be freely accessed through the Playstore and Appstore. The students and teachers use the learning applications as interactive English learning mediums in the classrooms. The results of the study showed that with the technology-based learning media, the students' performance, enthusiasm and motivation in learning could be improved and highlight a significant impact for interaction in learning especially in English online learning.Keywords: English teaching and learning, IT-based learning, Online Learning

Abstract

Advances in technology and information in social media contribute to the use of an international language, namely English. In communicating, the younger generation of Indonesia is also exposed to using English. The title of this article namely, “An Analysis of Intra-Lexical Code-Mixing in Podcast YouTube Channel” discusses the code-mixing phenomenon. The goal of this research is to ascertain the types of Intra-Lexical and also the level of using code-mixing in AH podcast YouTube channels. Data was taken and collected from Atta Halilintar's Youtube channel account. Documentation and observation were the methods used to gather data. The writer uses qualitative-descriptive method Hoffman's (1991) theory is used to classify the Intra-Lexical code-mixing types and Suwito's (1988) theory to classify the types of code-mixing levels. For the data collection steps in this analysis used observation and note-taking techniques. The results found in this code-mixing research are that in AH podcast, 35 code-mixings used by participants were identified. The most dominant data in this research is the application of intra-lexical in code-mixing of suffix type, while the most dominant type of level used is word-level code-mixing.

Abstract

This article examined Marxist Feminism as portrayed by the main characters in the film Hidden Figures. The researcher aimed to find the violation of Marxist Feminism in the movie and to identify personality traits of the main characters in facing daily discrimination in relation to Marxist Feminism violation. This research utilized the documentation method to collect data and the descriptive-qualitative method to present as well as explain how the data from the movie supports the objective of this study. In addition, Hartmann's Marxist Feminism theory (1979) and Murphy's characterization theory (1972) are used to analyze the data in this research. The findings of this research showed that the main characters in this film successfully coped with all of their problems caused by Marxist feminism stereotypes and violations with a righteous attitude. The three main characters are described as strong-willed women, which helps them deal with the daily discrimination that colored women faced at the time. Being determined, dedicated, outspoken, smart, and decisive helps them deal with everyday problems.

Abstract

The language and cultural barriers in the multilingual population have risen in Japan and resulted in the importance of public service translators and interpreters. Understanding thepublic service translators and interpreters’ roles and perspectives in intercultural communication in Japan is interesting and important to be investigated to explore the emotional and psychological impact on their work. Despite several research on translating, interpreting, or intercultural communication do exist, however the public service translators and interpreters’ emotional and psychological impact on their work has generally not been much researched. Therefore, it is necessary and meaningful to study the perspective and role of the public service translator and interpreters in the context of translation and intercultural communication.This research is based on the longitudinal observation and interview with ten public service translators and interpreters in Yamaguchi City, Japan. It was found that their preferences toward their work and other psychological aspects such as willingness to communicate, anxiety, and empathy also influence their role and perspective.
