Abstract

This study deals with rhetorical strategies used by governor candidates in the Jakarta Electoral Debate 2017. The aims of this study are to (1) describe rhetorical strategies which are used by governor candidates in the Jakarta Electoral Debate 2017, (2) analyze the realizations of rhetorical strategies, (3) reason the use of rhetorical strategies. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The source of data was the Jakarta Electoral Debate 2017. The data were collected by using documentary technique. Instrument for collecting the data was the documentary sheet. The results of the study show that the three rhetorical strategies, i.e. Logos, Ethos, Pathos, are found in the debates. The three realizations of rhetorical strategies are also found in the debates. Reasons for using rhetorical strategies are to acclaim, to attack, and to defend.   Keywords: Rhetorical Strategies, Governor Candidates, Jakarta Electoral Debate

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study is restricted to investigating and describing similarities and differences of the two languages about verbs in English and Toba Batak Language, included  in terms of types, functions, and forms. This study was applied by descriptive qualitative design. The data was taken an observe about Toba Batak language from some of  informant and text book. The findings describied that there were some similarities and differences verbs in English and Toba Batak Language. Both the languages, the similarities describied the functions of verb has as predicates, noun phrase modifiers, adjective phrase complements, subjects, suject complements and using to be as verbs. The analysis also shown the differences as how the pattern verbs using tenses in both of the languages, the verbs using affixes. In conclusion, there are similarities and differences of verbs in English and Toba Batak Language.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study deals with the types of illocutionary acts in Ellen Degeneres Talk show. The objectives of this study were to describe the types of illocutionary Acts which were used in Ellen Degeneres Talk show, to discover the type of illocutionary act which was dominantly used in Ellen Degeneres Talk show, why it is dominant and to elaborate in what contexts the dominant type occurs. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. It took two episodes of Ellen Degeneres Talk Showwhich is taken randomly from internet. Based on the analysis, not all types of illocutionary acts were used in Ellen Degeneres Talkbecause Declarative is not found.There were 326 utterances in two episodes selected, and the percentages of data were 43.86% ofassertives, 30.67% of directives, 18.40% of expressives, 6.13% of commisives and 0% of declaratives. The writer does not find declarations in the dialogue because there is no utterance that has a function that can change the world or the status of people through speaker’s utterance. The most dominant type of illocutionary acts found was Assertives. It shows that in their conversation the host most gave information and statement because it happened in the context of talk show where Ellen as the host gave some information about her guess star, information about the theme of the show and also about guest’s personal life and career.   Keywords:Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Illocutionary Acts

Abstract

This study deals with investigating cohesive devices in English department students’ research articles. This study aims at discovering types of cohesive devices and explaining why they are used in English department students’ research articles. Qualitative content analysis was utilized as a research design in this study. The data were in the form of clauses obtained from introduction part of 5 articles written by English department students. From the data analysis, it was discovered that there are 4 types of cohesive devices found namely reference, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunction totaling to 593 occurrences with the dominant type is reference totaling to 419 instances (70.66%). The factors affecting the use of cohesive devices are the number of sentences and clauses in the articles. Article with high cohesion tend to have more sentences than the others with middle and low cohesion. The highly cohesive texts employ more cohesive devices because there are more ideas to connect in relation to the number of sentences. Keywords: cohesive devices, research articles, content analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts Improving The Students’ Achievement In Writing Descriptive Paragraphs By Applying  Think-Talk-Write Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA 1 SMA PARULIAN 1 Medan that consists of 28 students. The data of this study were obtained quantitatively through writing test which shows that the range of students who got score 75 to up is 92.85% and qualitatively from interview sheets, diary notes and observation sheets. Based on the diary notes, observation sheets and interview sheets, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic and interested in writing. The result of research showed that the Think-talk-write Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. It is suggested that teachers should use Think-talk-write strategy to improving students’ writing especially in writing descriptive paragraph. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigate interpersonal metaphor in Mata Najwa’s talk show texts. Three are reasearch problems are raised, namely 1) What types of grammatical metaphors are used in Mata Najwa’s talk show. 2) How is interpersonal metaphor coded in Mata Najwa’s talk show. 3) In what contexts are the interpersonal metaphors coded as they are in Mata Najwa’s talk show. The analysis based on interpersonal metaphor as developed in Systematic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Specifically, dealt with interpersonal metaphor, in this study consist of two types, namely, metaphor of mood and metaphor of modaly. The total calculations are the metaphor of mood in Sang Penantang is about 94.85% and metaphor of modality is about 5.14%. The metaphor of mood in Sengatan Dahlan is about 95.34%and metaphor of modality is about 4.65%.In the investigating metaphor of mood is the dominant because the message of the sentences in political interaction used the patterns of mood which are seen as carrying the burden for making the different interpretation in the contextual occurences.   Keyword: Interpersonal Metaphor, Talk show.
