Abstract

Brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) remains one of the most destructive rice pests, necessitating environmentally friendly management supported by effective agricultural extension. This study examined the effects of farmer characteristics and Articulate Storyline-based interactive digital extension on strengthening this capacity for sustainable pest management in Tulungagung Regency, Indonesia. A one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design involved 84 rice farmers selected through multistage sampling. Questionnaires were validated (63 of 67 items valid, r-table = 0.361, n = 30) and reliable (Cronbach’s alpha 0.851–0.905). Intervention effectiveness was evaluated using N-Gain analysis, while multiple linear regression with classical assumption testing identified the influencing factors. Farmer characteristics significantly affected the outcome (B = 0.141, standardized ? = 0.150, t = 2.301, p = 0.024), while the digital extension medium showed a substantially greater influence (B = 1.249, standardized ? = 0.866, t = 13.310, p < 0.001). The model explained 69.1% of the variance (adjusted R² = 0.683; F (2,81) = 90.588, p < 0.001), confirming that instructional design outweighs demographic factors in building this capacity for effective pest control. Extension agencies should therefore prioritize content clarity and instructional quality over demographic targeting when developing digital media. As a single-group, one-region study, causal inference and generalizability remain limited; quasi-experimental or multi-region designs are recommended for future research. Overall, the findings highlight Articulate Storyline’s potential as an innovative tool for advancing environmentally friendly brown planthopper control and the broader digital transformation of agricultural extension services. Abstract

Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) is one of soil borne pathogens causes bacterial wilt diseases and R. solanacearum is difficult to control because it has a long survival in the soil and have many hosts alternatives. One alternative to control R. solanacearum and to increase productivity is by using grating with combination of resistant varieties of tomato as a rootstock and high production varieties of tomato as a scion. Several studies on grafting to suppress R. solanacearum were reported. However, study on grafting with combination between resistant tomato varieties (Amelia H7996) and high-production tomato varieties with R. solanacearum infestation and without R. solanacearum infestation on the component of yield and fruit quality is limited. The study aims to analyze the effect of grafting with R. solanacearum infestation to the intensity of bacterial wilt disease, component of yield, and fruit quality with R. solanacearum infestation and without R. solanacearum infestation. The result indicated that the intensity of bacterial wilt disease on grafted tomato did not significantly different from resistant rootstock but significantly different from scion. Infestation of R. solanacearum on grafted tomato can decreased the plant productivity that decreased the component of yield on grafted tomato. R. solanacearum infestation also decreased the fruit quality on diameters and fruit firmness. Nevertheless, R. solanacearum did not affect the Total soluble solid/TSS (°Brix). TSS on grafted tomato indicated that the value is taller than rootstock in the field with R. solanacearum infestation and in the field without R. solanacearum infestation. Bacterial wilt disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a devastating soil-borne vascular disease of tomato leading to a 100% yield loss. One of the alternatives to suppress the infestation of R. solanacearum infestation is the application of grafting techniques, which has been studied and successfully practiced by tomato growers. However, the infestation mode of R. solanacearum and the rhizobacterial community structure in grafted tomato plants are poorly reported. In this study, the rhizobacterial community structure in grafted tomato plants infected by R. solanacearum was investigated. The experiment was conducted on tomato germplasms with the implementation of tube grafting using resistant rootstocks (Amelia from Indonesia, H.7996 from Asian Vegetable Research Development Center/AVRDC) and susceptible scion (Servo from Indonesia). The rhizobacterial community structure was analyzed by metagenomic study under 16S rRNA genes sequencing with a distinct region (16SV3-V4) that was amplified using a specific primer (16SV4: 515F-806R) 5’-GTGCCAGCMGCCGCGGTAA and 5’GGACTACHVHHHTWTCTAAT. The results indicated that the grafted tomato plants and resistant rootstocks that were infected by R. solanacearum showed significantly lower intensity of bacterial wilt disease compared to the susceptible scion. The rhizobacterial community structure in the grafted tomato plants infected by R. solanacearum was indicated by predominant phyla of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria with dominant genera of Pseudomonas and Bacillus. Besides, significant difference was also indicated by species of Geitlerinema sp. in the grafted tomatoes infected by R. solanacearum.

Abstract

The utilization of reservoirs as a source of agricultural irrigation in Randuagung Village, Singosari District, Malang Regency, has not been optimal due to limitations in water distribution systems to agricultural land located at higher elevations. One of the appropriate technologies that can be applied to address this problem is a hydraulic ram pump, which operates without fuel or electrical energy. This study aimed to analyze the effect of air chamber length on the discharge and water lifting performance of a hydraulic ram pump. The research employed an experimental method using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) consisting of four air chamber length treatments, namely 30 cm (P1), 45 cm (P2), 60 cm (P3), and 75 cm (P4), with five replications for each treatment. The observed parameters included inlet discharge, outlet discharge, and water discharge at various delivery heights. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that air chamber length had no significant effect on inlet discharge, but significantly affected outlet discharge and the pump's ability to lift water. The treatment results obtained at an air tube length of 75 cm (P4) with an outlet discharge of 0.445 L/s. At the delivery height test, only P4 was able to deliver water up to a height of 9 meters with an average discharge of 0.0078 L/s. The findings indicate that increasing the air chamber length improves pressure stability, thereby enhancing the hydraulic ram pump's performance in lifting water.
