Abstract

Student engagement is essential for academic success and holistic development, yet many studies have examined only isolated predictors of engagement. While self-esteem and life satisfaction have each been linked to engagement, few studies have investigated their combined effect, particularly within non-Western contexts such as Indonesia. Addressing this gap, the present study examines the joint and individual contributions of self-esteem and life satisfaction to student engagement among 397 active university students in Bandung City. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected through the University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Multiple regression analysis revealed that self-esteem and life satisfaction significantly predicted student engagement, both independently and simultaneously (R² = 0.31, p < .001). Self-esteem emerged as the stronger predictor, accounting for 21.3% of the variance, compared to 9.7% from life satisfaction. These findings underscore the importance of fostering both self-esteem and life satisfaction in educational settings to enhance student engagement. The study contributes a novel perspective by demonstrating the synergistic influence of these two psychological factors in a culturally specific context. Practical implications include the need for integrated student development programs that promote self-worth and subjective well-being. The study calls for future research to examine how each predictor influences different dimensions of engagement—behavioral, emotional, and cognitive—over time.

Abstract

Phubbing, or phone snubbing, refers to the tendency of individuals to ignore people around them by focusing excessively on their mobile phones. This phenomenon is increasingly common among college students, who are among the highest users of the internet and smartphones in Indonesia. Previous research indicates that psychological factors, particularly life satisfaction, may influence phubbing behavior. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether life satisfaction can predict phubbing among college students. This research employed a quantitative approach with a causal–correlational design. A total of 200 students aged 18–25 years were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. Life satisfaction was measured with the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), while phubbing was assessed using the Phubbing Scale. Both instruments showed adequate levels of validity and reliability. Data were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression after classical assumption tests were met. The results indicate that life satisfaction does not significantly predict phubbing behavior, either in overall phubbing scores or in its dimensions of communication disturbance and phone obsession. These findings suggest that life satisfaction alone cannot explain the occurrence of phubbing, and other psychological factors such as loneliness and flow may play a more critical role. In conclusion, life satisfaction is not a predictor of phubbing among Indonesian college students. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature on digital behavior and positive psychology. Practically, the findings provide insights for educators, parents, and policymakers to design strategies that address phubbing behavior more effectively.

Abstract

Phubbing, or the phenomenon of cell phone use by college students when interacting with others, is a phenomenon that requires careful attention. This neglect of others and a greater focus on cell phone use makes phubbing a cause for concern, as it impacts students' academic and social relationships. Factors influencing phubbing are conscientiousness and life satisfaction. This study aimed to explore whether life satisfaction moderates the effect of conscientiousness on phubbing in college students. This study involved 306 college students recruited through convenience sampling. The measurement instruments used were the Satisfaction with Scale (α=0,868), the Phubbing Scale (α=0,990), and conscientiousness (α=0,614). Moderation analysis was used for data analysis. The results revealed that life satisfaction did not significantly moderate the effect of conscientiousness on phubbing in college students. Conscientiousness remained influential on phubbing, regardless of the students' level of life satisfaction. This condition is suspected to be related to cognitive flexibility and failure experiences, which could be confounding variables in the interaction between conscientiousness and life satisfaction. Future research should consider cognitive flexibility and failure experiences as mediating variables. Keywords: cognitive flexibility; life satisfaction; phubbing; trait conscientiousness.
